There is nothing wrong with being gay, but refusing to talk about one’s sexuality makes it seem as though there might be. It also reflects the insidious reality of homophobia—people hide the truth about who they love for the same reasons that people hide their religion, their political views, or complicated family structures: because they’re afraid that someone will use it against them. Because coming out in Hollywood can kill your chances of moving up/getting more roles. There's a reason why Matt Bomer didn't come out until this year two years after his show was striking it rich/iron was hot. Because most of the shows watchers are straight women and coming out loses some of them and screws up ratings. Same for Gordon-Levitt if he's gay: He could get roles like Inception but some other doors may close due to the industry and other factors.

In a world where many people think of gay people being associated with a bunch of weird and/or outdated stereotypes, Cooper coming out does a lot to normalize the group.

If I was ever famous I can't imagine I'd ever willingly want to talk about my personal life... even if I was straight.

I'd much prefer to just live my life and not talk about it with random unknown people. It would just seem SO odd talking about who I'm dating with complete strangers.

Not all straight celebrities talk about their personal life either Jay Z and Beyonce refused to publicly acknowledge their relationship for years... even after they were married.

Also much smaller celebrities but Hillarie Burton and Jeffery Dean Morgan kept their relationship, her pregnancy and birth of their child a complete secret until several MONTHS AFTER the baby was born. People were surprised they were even dating, let alone she was PREGNANT and had a child!

And there are probably many more examples of straight heterosexual hollywoood keeping things out of the public eye.
