Android Hardware Thread - 2010 Edition

For some reason the charges aren't adding up when I go to order a droid. Even though my new every two isn't until July they are still letting me order the phone on verizon's site.

When I go to order it shows my family plan which is $60 and then I have the option to pick a data plan. The data plan is discounted to $23.99 from $29.99 because of corporate benefits. When I go to review everything later it does not show the discount and rings the whole thing up for $89.99.

I'm still for some reason hesitant as to whether I need a phone like this, I'm in front of a computer most of the day :S

Wow, Dell's having an awful night:

04-21-10lookingp.jpg

We'd already heard that Dell was working on larger tablets, and tonight's huge leak brought us tons of info on the Looking Glass, a seven-inch big brother to the Streak 5 that's due out in November. For starters, it's running Android 2.1 on a Tegra 2 processor, with an optional TV tuner module so you can watch ATSC or DVB-T programming on the seven-inch 800x480 display -- the same resolution as the Streak, which is sort of weak. In addition, the render on the slide shows an AT&T U-verse browser, though, which is interesting -- too bad there's no more info about it. RAM is pegged at 4GB, with another 4GB of flash for storage and an SDHC slot for up to 32GB of expansion, and there's a 1.3 megapixel camera. Yep, it's pretty much just a bigger Streak with a different, potentially awesomer processor -- imagine how slick you'll look with this bad boy held to your face on a call.

...Or is this the week of leaks?

edit: 4gb RAM? good lord

I kinda agree now -- Dell's PR team just got a raise.

However, this does remind me of the Great HTC Leak of 2009, when everything was revealed 6 months early. /shrug

They're shoving 4 gigs of RAM into that thing? Sweet Jesus.

Also, in case anybody else doubted the Incredible's unrelenting superiority, shit has an extra 250 MBs of ROM storage. God damn. http://goo.gl/bGUo (Edit: I'm not late with this, am I?)

Given the size, i wish they had slipped a keyboard in there like they did with the WP7-based Lightning. i know, the Smoke has a keyboard, but the screen is small and i'd rather have the keyboard hidden away when not in use. Still, slick-looking hardware.

And 2.2 is coming in May for Google I/O. Sigh.

Eh. Donut was talked about at I/O last year and it wasn't released for the G1 or MyTouch until September/October.

NOOOOOOOOOO.

I finally get the courage to switch to Verizon (leaning toward the Droid)when my contract is up with AT&T and then Dell leaks the best looking devices I have ever seen, and they're all on AT&T?
Seriously, I'm mesmerized as to which of Dell's phone's I'd even want, they all look bloody fantastic. And the UI looks pretty nice as well.

Guess I'm holding off until Q4 at least to get a new phone.

Hrm, I'd still choose the Droid over these phones, but maybe that's just because I prefer stock Android over anything except Sense... The most interesting of all the devices are the two tablets.

the new king of androids? the dell flash with feature standouts like curved glass, image stabilizer and tv out.

It looks nice and all, but the thing is, that phone is still at least 10 months out from its release date. To put that in perspective, 10 months ago, the best Android phone available was the G1. What I'm getting at is that a lot can happen in 10 months. Moreover, given that Dell has not yet proven itself as a high-end smartphone maker, I feel like holding a bit of skepticism over how well they can realize these designs as real products.

Eh, even right now the Desire, Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, and to an extent Nexus One all best all of Dell's leaked devices in most or all important categories.

I believe to address that issue specifically, Google will be releasing (all) portions of their updates for download in the Android market starting with 2.2.

the goal would be a quicker turnaround, but it will still be delayed. Hopefully without only having to "test" the OS, it wont be a 3-8 month delay

By the time you wait for the Dell phone, a lot new and better shit is going to come out. Phone tech moves on so fast.

So I'm stuck on Verizon and want to get a new Droid phone. I'm balking at the $200 price tag on the Droid and the Incredible.

Does that just leave me with the Eris?

My wife owns an eris now and I'm not sure I want to get another one.

Kevin Rose is getting an Incredible -- a HUGE get for Android.

This can't be for real, he's such an Apple-boy, but it's stated on his Twitter.

decided to buy a 'droid incredible' from verizon, sooo tired of the at&t suckage (keeping the iphone, but data only)

Kevin is cool in my book. I miss the old Tech TV days...sigh.
I don't think Kevin is an Android hater by any means, he just prefers Apple Products, and there is nothing wrong with that. Hopefully this means we'll get more Android commentary from Diggnation.

Definitely. Kevin's always a guy I want to hear from -- even back when he was a kid on TechTV. Just a real smart geek. And damn, what a life he leads with all the fun stuff he gets payed to do.

I envy him (in a good way). :D

Idg why he wants to keep his iPhone for data. I suspect he'll abandon it in a couple weeks or days...it makes sense to have a Touch if you're rocking a RAZR, but if you're rocking a Droid or Incredible...you have a webkit browser, you have a lot of apps, you have freaking Verizon...it serves no purpose.

For media I can get, as Android media is "good enough" but not spectacular, but for data? Uh..

All apps aren’t made the same? I can understand how one would want to stay the platform for apps like Tweetie, Articles, Instapaper, Reeder, Here File File, and so on.

Man, if the smoke had stock android and top tier specs that would SOOO be my next phone.

Coming from a 3GS, I can't see app quality or my favorite app being a reason to carry around and manage two devices, but I guess everyones different.

I'm going to ask a simple question here...

Q) Does Android, in any of the hardware support Call Display? The reason I ask is because I'm about to explode at Rogers because this "tech expert" on the phone was telling me that Android didn't support call display, googling it didn't provide anything on this and I highly doubt such a basic feature isn't supported.

what do you mean by call display?

Showing the *beep* name of the person calling. This is so stupid I don't even know where to begin with Rogers and their bs. My brothers iPhone shows caller id, my moms ancient phone does, every phone I've ever come across shows the name and number! And these clowns are telling me that it's not possible... -_-

Hmm, I've never seen a cell phone in the US show the name of a caller unless they are in the phone's contacts. Is that normal for Canadian cell phones?

i have never heard of any kind of cell phone ever showing caller id if it wasnt in the contacts. the iphone doesn't, and neither has any other phone i have ever used for the last 12 years

So am I misunderstanding CrushDance's post or is he just crazy?

Is this an American thing? I have never seen a phone without caller id(if you have it). If someone calls you its supposed to show the name and number with caller Id. I'm honestly thinking this is a problem on Rogers end, because for some reason the X10 shows the number but not the name and my 7year old phone does?
