Dell's slate phones remind me of...rather, look exactly like this:

and that's not a good thing, it's kind of a boring, dated look. I'm also scared about how they've decided they can hang with HTC in the completely reskinning Android game. I don't see it being too great.

Is this an American thing? I have never seen a phone without caller id(if you have it). If someone calls you its supposed to show the name and number with caller Id. I'm honestly thinking this is a problem on Rogers end, because for some reason the X10 shows the number but not the name and my 7year old phone does?

The name only shows if you have the number saved in your contacts with a name.

Some services show the area the number is calling from, like NY, NY (Sprint comes to mind), but no, you only see the name if you put it there beforehand on phones in the USA...

Ah I see. Guess I can live with it, a bit annoying though that it doesn't show the persons name by billing info like you said. Rogers shoud have told me this before gleefully asking if I wanted it, what's the point of showing the number but not the name?

Anyway so this is a rogers problem then right? Just to clarify? If so I'll call them tomorrow and cancel that $8 "feature"

Isn't the Nexus One due for a price drop or something? I want one, but I want to see sone drop, even I'd it's to $499.

Now that the incredible is out, I'd like a little more inventive for it (I'm on AT&T).

Unfortunately if you want to stay on att and get an android you are going to be disappointed. I like att and the speed so I stick with it and did an iphone buy and sell to offset the nexus one price

I would honestly wait a bit. There will be a ton of awesome phones released before Summer ends.

It looks like the Nexus One isn't coming to Verizon after all. The Google store was updated, and it now encourages Verizon customers to buy an HTC Incredible.

Is the Nexus One still coming to Sprint? I kept reading here that it was going to be released this month with a 2 year contract. That not the case anymore?

Makes sense, the Incredible is a better buy anyway, even if both are almost alike

Also, a new(?) Dell roadmap has been leaked:

If it's true, it looks like the Streak is launching next month (or so)

I'm gonna change my Iphone to android based phone but don't really know what to get. What is considered to be currently the best phone ? Or upcoming (within 3 months) ?

No sony ericsons nor google phones.

We'll see over the course of the week what's up. After a certain point I think all confidence can safely be abandoned :-(

That sucks.. I've been looking forward to getting a top notch Android phone within the next few weeks and it's looking like that's not coming anytime soon, and the Evo is still only Summer. I really don't know if I want to be stuck with the Hero for 2 years. Not that it's bad, just that the others are so close.

Same. Except I don't have a Hero. Sprint said it was coming out, at least, but maybe Verizon's axe killed Sprint's plans too. They never officially announced a date though so stay strong brosef :lol

It's been 4 months, right? Methinks the N1 is close to the end of it's life cycle

and I just rooted mine :(

Ok so i'm this -> <- close to updating my 5 year old phone with a HTC Desire and now i hear of a new model? I did hear that the Desire was not made for the US market, so is this just the US version of the same phone? Please say yes.

Yes and no. Go look it up on YouTube to see.

The incredible, desire, and Nexus One are almost alike, minus a few differences. The biggest diff is that the Desire and Incredible both have HTC's Sense, but the N1 can run Sense perfectly, if rooted.

The other biggest diff is the 8mp camera on the Incredible.

The Desire/Nexus One are GSM phones, while the Incredible is CDMA. You can get a Australian Desire that works perfectly in the US if you want it: http://www.personaldigital.com.au/p...-Roger-&-Telecom-NZ-Telstra-Unlocked/buy.html

I should have clarified, the best thing they have now to me is the Hero and I don't want to get that now and be stuck with it for 2 years when new phones that blow it away are probably mere months away. But man, I've been waiting way too long, they need to just put out the Nexus One or the Evo right now.

End of it's life cycle? Maybe for you guys that buy new phones every few months at full price when the next best thing comes out. :lol Me, I'm signing a 2 year contract and I want to get something that's going to be good if I'm stuck with it for 2 years, or 1 year if they let me upgrade.

Ah. Well i'd probably get the SE xperia if the camera was all that important to me =)
And the Desire is the only one of these currently being marketed in .se so i'm sort of relieved the differences were not bigger :P

It's just very difficult to jump in at the correct time when you are out of the loop like i've been in regards to mobile phones. There's always something slightly shinier "just a few weeks away"

Google telling folks to by the incredible instead doesn't bode well for the N1. Remember the Droid Eris? Verizon killed it in 4 months. It was a lesser phone, sure, but it gives you an idea of the life cycle of smartphones these days.

It just sounds to me like it's becoming what PC gaming is. That your top of the line system is "outdated" in 3-4 months. Yeah, you still have an awesome system when the next thing comes out, but there's always going to be something better.

Like I said, it doesn't bother me if there's something better as long as I have the best phone I can get at the time. I just don't really want to settle for the Hero right now. I know it's a pretty good phone, but spec wise it's nowhere near close to these phones that are on the horizon.

See, I feel the same way. It's frustrating when you drop BIG FACE HUNDEDD'S on a device that's gonna be phased out in 4-6 months. Add to that, the device is just a phone.

But I'm a whore for phones, so it's the belief I chose, unfortunately.

Google confirms no N1 for Verizon... like I've said before they way they handled the N1 from the start was been backwards they should have had all the phones available from day one or very soon after if they were going to be on all the carriers and they should have had the accessories ready from the start Now either Sprint will get Verizon's N1's and it will go up against the EVO or they won't be coming out on Sprint either.

You're forgetting a few features of the N1 that the Incredible is missing.
-Dual mics with noise cancellation
-Docking contacts (no dock for you, incredible)
-correct button order at the bottom (enough is enough, pick one layout HTC...Google's)
-faster updates through Google, bypassing HTC/VZW

Methinks the Sprint version will get demolished by the EVO

Doesn't the Evo have the nebulus timeframe of "summer" though? If the Nexus One were to be released first part of May and the Evo weren't released until August then they'd have a couple months before it was eclipsed by the Evo.

Is the Nexus One really that horrible? Spec wise it looks awesome.

I've been a N1 user since pretty much launch and I don't have many issues with it. There are definitely shortcomings sometimes relating to service in my area, although it's hard to tell if it is an issue with the phone or T-Mobile service as I am technically in Orlando, but not the incorporated city.

Other than that, it has functioned incredibly for me and has served as a suitable replacement to my previous iPhone 3G and in a lot of ways completely surpassed it.

And at the same time, I didn't pay the $530 asking price, but the $180 price with a 2-year contract, so my outlook may be a little different than someone that paid the $530.

No, in fact I wouldn't personally choice the EVO over the N1. 4.1" screen is just too damn big for me, and AMOLED is so beautiful I can't imagine going back. Not to mention we have no clue the impact of the 4G antenna on battery life.

The N1 will be one of the top 3-5 phones out for the remainder of the year if you look at the launch schedules. It's a war of choices, so do you want an Incredible, a Nexus One, or an EVO?! PICK PICK PICK

Whichever is on Sprint! I'm switching from ATT to Sprint due to the prices, so that rules out the Incredible as well as Verizon is just as expensive for their plans.

AT&T and VZW are expensive as can be, that's for sure. Not sure I'd pick Sprint over TMO though, but I suppose that's all up to your coverage area.

The Evo has a rumored date of June 13th. Considering that they have an official unveiling event scheduled for mid-May, I doubt it would be any later than mid-June.

That's the N1's killer under-appreciated feature. It's going to stay current longer and be up-to-date faster than any other device because of its direct connection with Google. People saying things like "the N1 is 4 months old, time to be price drop it and move it to the back to make room for new phones" frustrate and amuse me at the same time. They do that in general though. I hate the cult of waiting. "I could get this... but this will be out in just a bit." 2 months later: "I could get this now yeah... but THIS will be out soon!" 2 months later: "fuck it I'm tired of waiting give me whatever the fuck you've got." :lol

Sprint's coverage dwarfs TMO's massively, especially with its mutual shared data roaming on Verizon's towers.

Isn't Sprint still more expensive than Tmo though? I haven't looked at Sprint's prices recently, as their phone selection has been less than stellar.

Hell naw! T-Mobile's truly unlimited plan starts at 60 bucks, plus another 30 for their smartphone data plan, with another 10 dollars for messaging (the 30 dollar smartphone fee only mentions web and e-mail, no MMS or SMS, so I'm assuming it's not bundled). Sprint's basic unlimited plan starts at 70 dollars for unlimited mobile-to-mobile, data, text, GPS services and an annual phone upgrade option from the Sprint Premier thingy. It only gives you 450 landline and roaming minutes though, take that how you will. For me, Sprint is leagues cheaper.

Edit: When it comes to phone selection, neither T-Mobile or Sprint have anything to say for themselves, really. Except now Sprint will pack the Evo and hopefully the N1, which will bring it in line with Verizon for the top Android carrier(s), despite T-Mobile's initial support drive for the platform which is now lagging behind.

Mid-June I would be okay with waiting for. July or August would be very hard for me to wait.

People are smoking crack if they think the nexus one is at the end of its life cycle, it has basically the same hardware as phones that still aren't released

I thought roaming was free, so long as you spend more than 50% of your total talk time on Sprint towers. I wonder if they changed this recently. PEACE.

This is my exact reason for keeping the phone. First in line to get updates and the premier hardware to develop for. The only thing I wish HTC would do in good faith is allow N1 users to trade in their phone for a newer model with the better touchscreen.

The Incredible looks awesome, but to me Sense get in the way more than it helps. I like the look of stock and 2.1 looks really good to me. I hope that 2.2 isnt a whole new UI.

It shouldn't be frustrating though. Android is very open. Phone technology moves fast. Just because Apple only releases a phone once a year doesn't mean everyone else has to. When you're in the market for a phone, see what's scheduled in your window, and pick from there. There will always be something better. You can have the top of the line anything, but especially phone, for long. Even still, the N1 and Droid are still hanging in there and are by no means outdated, but as Android put more emphasis on multitouch, HTC realized they should put more emphasis on the multitouch parts. And while Droid isn't Snapdragon, it's still fast, can run the best games, has a great 3.7 high res screen and is the best hardware keyboard phone out now.

The Desire may be bested by the INcredible, but barely. It's more geek gossip and anger about a few mega pixels than something like buying a Vista and then Win7 comes out the next day.

If not having the unanimous "best" phone for more than a couple months means I can have the choice of what phone I like the best on the network I prefer, then so be it. It's a small trade off to make...just because a phone comes out with a few more megapixels, it doesn't mean your camera stops working.

No, Sprint is less expensive than T-Mobile on a plan-by-plan basis, and with Sprint's free calling to cell phones on any carrier, their lowest minute plan is practically equivalent to an unlimited plan for most people.

As far as phone selection, I don't think that Sprint has had it so bad. If you look over the previous year, they were the exclusive carrier of WebOS devices for about 6 months, and they got the HTC Hero, which was the best Android phone available at the time of its launch. Now they have the Nexus One and EVO4G coming within the next 2 months.

I think the main advantage of going with T-Mobile would be that it is a GSM phone, so you can easily switch between multiple phones by swapping SIM cards, can do simultaneous voice and data without needing 4G, and will work in Europe if you travel.

What I don't understand is why Vodafone is still getting the Nexus One when they have the Desire and the X10, did Verizon just say no we don't want the N1 competing with the Incredible?

Hell naw. Sprint’s free calls to any cell phone is amazing.

Samsung and Yahoo! Form Strategic Partnership for Mobile Phones
Companies Partner to Distribute Yahoo! Services Including Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0 and Yahoo! oneSearch(TM) on New Samsung Mobile Phones Worldwide

SEOUL, South Korea & LAS VEGAS, Jan 08, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Samsung, a leading provider and innovator of mobile phones, and Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, today announced a strategic global partnership to distribute Yahoo!’s popular services on millions of new Samsung mobile phones in more than 60 countries. Samsung will pre-load Yahoo! services, including Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0, Yahoo! oneSearch, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger, on its mobile phones beginning in the first half of 2007. This new relationship is the latest demonstration of the companies’ clear focus on extending their leadership in the mobile Internet.

Samsung has already launched its first mobile handset, the SGH-E570, pre-loaded with Yahoo! Search. Samsung plans to greatly expand the number of its mobile handsets with pre-loaded Yahoo! services in 2007 and will roll out Yahoo! oneSearch after it goes live globally in the coming months.

In my opinion, this is why Froyo can't come soon enough. I'm all for Android being an open platform but when companies are striking deals to replace the Google services with alternatives it seems, well a bit rich? Google do all the work, free of cost and Yahoo can effectively profit on that by removing those features and replacing them with their own - I wouldn't mind this so much if I'm given the choice to use Gmail over Yahoo mail, Google search over Yahoo, but if these phones don't allow me that choice then that would put me off.

If Froyo can uncouple these things so i could get a handset which has Yahoo as it's default but i can download Gmail, Search etc from the market then that's the ideal solution. Can you imagine a situation where every Android handset manufacturer strikes deals with other search providers and effectively cuts Google out of their own OS? Or Google has to pay, say HTC to use it's apps on it's own OS? Crazy. The scenario I want to see in the future is the ability to choose your search provider from the marketplace, be it Bing, Yahoo, Google etc. Not to have that dictated by my carrier and/or manufacturer.
