My G2 got 57.9 fps on that and I'm just at 1.5 Ghz. Going up to 1.8 when I get home tonight.

See, I'm wondering if this will be the first (of many) that may switch between GPU's ala Intel/Nvidia (think Optimus).

That is just a hunch.

so I work in a bookstore, specifically in the basement part of the store. I used to always lose 3G when going down into the basement (this is on my Droid X which I got 2 months ago).

Just now, I opened the Market app. The screen went black, and the phone rebooted itself. Now I'm in the basement and I have 3 of 4 bars of 3G. Really weird...

I also still have not received the 2.2.1 Froyo OTA update from Verizon yet.

iPhone user here, thinking of switching to Android. Which is the best value handset currently? And what is the king-of-the-hill? I played around with a Desire X in a store today and really liked it.

If you can, wait until after Jan. 5th, 2011. That is when CES starts and we're going to truly see the next-gen smartphones (Android) coming out.

I want to see a 4.3 inch screen with a hardware keyboard from HTC. That shit would be crazy big.

What's the usual turnaround time between announcements at CES and actual release of phones? I'm due for an upgrade in less than a week and I'm absolutely dying for a new phone. As far as I know the only thing rumored to be coming to AT&T is the Motorola Olympus, and with the Nexus S being the new 'developer' phone, I don't see me buying a Captivate as a terrible decision seeing as they have the same specs. Just having a terrible internal debate on whether I can wait any longer. :lol

If your on AT&T and don't want to switch carriers WAIT. Captivate isn't a bad phone, but it's still stuck on 2.1 without a root and just IDK nothing special other than the screen. If you have to go Android wait on AT&T (I'd rather get an iPhone or WP7 device on AT&T right now).

Turn around time could be fast. There is rumors we might get stuff mid January.

But what exactly will I be missing out on if I don't wait? I have played with my brother's Captivate and I really like the feel of the phone. I'm set on Android as my mobile platform as well (currently on Windows Mobile 6 so anything will be an upgrade though :)). I just feel like with the way the market is right now, there won't be any apps out there that will be able to take advantage of dual core phones for a long while.

I'm also hesitant about waiting because I know that the Galaxy S lines are very good phones (with rooting and installing custom firmware), but I'm not sure if these new ones will be. I've heard bad things about Motoblur and not being able to root certain Motorola phones on Verizon.

Just frustrates me that Apple has AT&T by the balls and as a result I get screwed out of a decent Android phone selection.

Build it and they will come.

EDIT: Damn...almost every ad I'm seeing on GAF and xda is for the Nexus S.

Why stick with AT&T.

Bail the fuck out.

Sooo... I'm Canadian here. Should I just get the HTC Desire now or should I wait for some new Android phones to come out on Rogers or Telus ? I am not even sure what good HTC Android phones are coming out in 2011 here in Canada :( How easy is it to update the OS from 2.1/2.2 to 2.3 ?

Thanks :)

The captivate has root and multiple different roms with android 2.2 on it. If you are gonna keep it stock I agree captivate is kind of lame mostly due to lag but ever since I put some of the 2.2 roms on it it seems to run much smoother and I have been enjoying using it much more.

if you are stuck on ATT definitely wait until end of Jan... rumors swirl that the new moto phone will be out mid jan... the nexus S will probably see a quiet release sometime in January as well. Dont get the captivate with how close you are to much better phones.

1. Not much, especially if hearing dualcore doesn't make you shake in excitement. Some hardware stuff like more internal memory, bigger screens, front facing cameras, better cameras, all that is a given for newer (and new flagship) phones but if you're happy now then jump in.

2. Motoblur is a little annoying but in reality Motoblur and Touchwiz are good UIs that enthusiasts hate because it's not stock. That's all there really is. It's just different. Most of these UIs polish up Android in one way or another - be it cool tricks (touchwiz adds settings controls to the notification pane) or visually.

3. AT&T is supposedly getting the Moto Olympus which will be king of Android phones.

With Android there will always be a "Oh man! That's a cool phone coming out and I just bought one!" feeling because manufacturers are competing with one another. You have to make sure you pick a phone you really like so you won't regret it. There's no more clearcut time of change than right now - CES will have a ton of dualcore phones. They will be more powerful than the ones we have now. If that doesn't bother you then go for it.

Yeah, I'm just going to go with the Nexus S at launch, there is always something to wait for.

Even though CES is around the corner, I'm not regretting my G2 purchase. The chipset I really want, the MSM8960, won't be in phones until 2012.

The G2 is hot. I wish I could get it but I'm not leaving Verizon, evar!

Glad I read this I was about to upgrade to a iphone 4 but a dual core phone is too enticing.

So I really want a Nexus S, is there any reason I wouldn't want one?

The most common complaints against Nexus S are:

1.Lack of LED notification light
2.No SD card (plus in my book)
3.Not 4G capable
4.Non-HD video camera
5.Not dualcore in the beginning of a dualcore Android world

The dualcore thing doesn't bother me because I believe it'll take a long time for the benefits of that to become mainstream (such as games) since it'll be so new, isn't required by Google (speeding up adoption) and isn't in the Nexus S or gaming-savior PSP Android phone. It'll obviously help performance and I'm sure some stuff will be targeting it but we probably have some time before developers make an abundance of stunning games that require dualcores.

The other factors are things you could easily decide on yourself.

Google Nexus S hands-on
The nice folks in Mountain View, CA were kind enough to shoot us over a Google Nexus S, and we finally have it in our hands. Here are first impressions in addition to a boat load of photos below:

* The Nexus S feels very solid and is extremely comfortable to hold and use in your hand. It’s the greatest Samsung Galaxy S handset to exist — we’re really loving the shape of the device including the “inverted chin” on the bottom of the phone as well as the contoured glass display. With Gingerbread’s slightly refreshed UI and Samsung’s deep, rich black levels on the display, it’s tough to tell where the screen starts at the top — the design works that well together. As far as the rear of the phone is concerned, well, it’s a high gloss black plastic — Fingerprint Productions, Inc.

* This might be the fastest Android handset we’ve used — not necessarily because the hardware is so spectacular (it’s obviously top notch, just not mind-numbing), but because of the speed increases and optimizations Gingerbread brings paired with Google’s stock OS with no customizations — this bad boy flies.

* Touch sensitivity and response on the display makes the phone that much more delightful to use, and again, the screen itself is sharp, vivid, and looks great.

* The four Android keys beneath the display work well, are touch sensitive, and even light down when a key is selected in addition to giving you a mild haptic feedback buzz.

* From our very quick speakerphone test, audio didn’t sound all that great, but audio from the ear speaker sounded fine.

* The way the phone powers off — as rumored, it’s like an old tube TV — is so darn cool we shot a quick video of that and an ultra brief walk through.

Check back for our review of the device in the coming days, and in the meantime, peruse some visuals, why don’t you? We even brought out our Nexus One to meet its new friend. Photos and video after the break!

I have no doubt that my Nexus will fly too. :D

Also--- Did I read somewhere that there is a Nexus S coming to AT&T?

Most likely. Just like the Nexus.
Plus you know Big Red is getting the iPhone next, so AT&T has to expand their smartphone line-up.

not sure if ATT is going to "officially" take it, but i'd be willing to wager that by end of Jan you can get an ATT version online.

Don't go with the desire unless you want the same jankey broken multitouch screen as the nexus one. Are your only choices on TELUS?

I'm nearing the end of my contract with Rogers. However, it doesn't seem like Rogers have any HTC phone other than HTC Magic+... didn't people say that Rogers and HTC don't really get along ?

Anyone know what AT&T's return policy is like?

Say I get a Captivate around Christmas time. I know I have 30 days to return it and pay a restocking fee etc., but if I return it am I still able to get a different phone at a subsidized price if a hone like the Olympus is out?

Just giving you guys a sneak peek at what I'm cooking up for the 2011 thread. Premise is to break down the globe into regions in which you can get the devices and then have different groupings of the phones based on region and provider.

Banner is more place holder as I quickly did that in a paint like program. Feedback in the thread or via PM is appreciated. I will probably post the thread during Christmas break (around the 19th or 20th.)

Yeah, your contract and eligibility will reset.

I wonder if Verizon will make all their LTE phones "world phones." I guess it depends on which companies operate on the same bands overseas.

Is there anything more (source, details, etc.) to the rumor of the Nexus S going to VZW in February?
