Just giving you guys a sneak peek at what I'm cooking up for the 2011 thread. Premise is to break down the globe into regions in which you can get the devices and then have different groupings of the phones based on region and provider.

Banner is more place holder as I quickly did that in a paint like program. Feedback in the thread or via PM is appreciated. I will probably post the thread during Christmas break (around the 19th or 20th.)

Can I please help you with the graphics?

Yeah, your contract and eligibility will reset.

Sweet. I'm in dire need of a new phone. So I'll wait until close to Christmas rather than my actual upgrade and get either a Captivate or an iPhone 4 and take my chances that the Olympus or an HTC equivalent will be out within that 30 day window. Paying the restocking fee won't be that big of a deal.

I think so!
honeycomb-motorola.jpg

Alleged specs are:
He claims the tablet has a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, 32GB of storage, a 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 5MP rear carmer and 2MP front camera, a micoSD card slot, HDMI output and a gyroscope. It will be available with UMTS, CDMA, and LTE connectivity and come in 7 and 12 inch versions.

So again that is:
- Nvidia Tegra 2 DC CPU
- 32GB of internal storage
- 1280x800 display resolution
- 5MP rear/2MP front camera's
- microSD
- HDMI (micro?)
- Gyroscope

Looks like this will come on all carriers--- T-mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. Looking good and sounds awesome!

Go to Best Buy (and maybe Radio Shack) and you won't have to worry about a restocking fee :D

Check with local Best Buy though, when I worked there my area was a test market for no restocking fees on anything whatsoever store-wide. The iPhone is normally the only phone that had one but it didn't at my store.

Engadget's Nexus S review is up.

8/10

The Good:
Super fast CPU
Android 2.3 is a major improvement
Unique design

The Bad:
Screen had some coloring issues
UI is still counterintuitive in some cases
No native use for front-facing cam

It seems like every couple of weeks we're saying something along the lines of "x is the best Android smartphone on the market right now." We'd like to tell you differently when it comes to the Nexus S, but the truth is, it really is the best Android device available right now. Sure, we'd prefer it was on Verizon, and yes, there are some issues with the phone and OS that detract from the good bits... but there are also a lot of good bits. We'd been longing for a Galaxy S device that wasn't burdened by Samsung's sometimes-clunky TouchWiz, and in joining forces with Google, the company has more than delivered.

There's no shortage of great phones available right now, and there's no question that 2011 will usher in a flood of devices that make 2010's offerings seem forgettable. Like we said earlier, this isn't a perfect device, and in fact a lot of what's exciting about this phone is what's happening behind the scenes -- as if the stage is set for the arrival of Honeycomb and a slew of features. Still, when it comes to state of the art for Android right now, the buck stops here.

I'm nearing the end of my contract with Rogers. However, it doesn't seem like Rogers have any HTC phone other than HTC Magic+... didn't people say that Rogers and HTC don't really get along ?

My Bell Vibrant is in for repair (second time) so I bought a HTC Desire Z. Absolutely love it so far. My Galaxy S is going for sale when I get it back. You should check one out if you're at a Bell store. Using the Galaxy S for a few months I forgot how sturdy and substantial HTC phones feel. It just feels so solid and well made. Its fast, has 2.2 already, and Sense UI is just plain awesome compared to Samsungs TouchWiz.

I wonder if Verizon will make all their LTE phones "world phones." I guess it depends on which companies operate on the same bands overseas.

Is there anything more (source, details, etc.) to the rumor of the Nexus S going to VZW in February?

I, for one, am intrigued.

i would take a lesser phone if it was a "nexus" phone. You can't sell me on a "much better phone" if it is saddled with touchwiz or motoblur. CDMA is killing verizon with some of these phones.

the updates smiley though, i'd be curious to see if Sammy pulled a bunch of 2.2 updates to just release 2.3 since they have been working closely with google on the S... that would be a nice bonus to the current galaxy s owners who have been getting screwed

I think at this point it makes me wonder if Google is pulling strings with certain vendors to get the latest releases out to phones (technically) independent of the carrier. Much like Google is trying to update framework around Android to be "version gnostic", maybe updates could be "carrier gnostic" and have them pushed via the vendor instead.

Right now it seems the "with Google" or "Google Experience" phones are the only stand outs in terms of bleeding edge and I hope Google changes that; possibly this announcement would be something of the sort.

In a post on the company’s Direct2Dell blog, Dell states that Streaks SIM-locked to AT&T’s network will not be updated to Froyo until some time in January. Dell began updating the European version of the Streak to Android 2.2 last month, and stated at that time that AT&T devices would receive the update in December.

After watching Phonedogs unboxing video I think this is a good buy for people that want to be at the cutting edge of Google updates for Android. It is the Nexus Two, albeit not what most of us wanted from the next installment of the Nexus line. This phone is what 3Gs was to the 3G.

But I'm very happy that Google will continue the Nexus legacy, and hope next years model is much more of a leap than a hop.

If I would lose my Nexus One today, I would upgrade to this phone. But I think I will just continue using my One until next year...And I will probably breath new life into it thanks to CyanogenMod.

How deep do the skins go? I imagine launcher pro or ADW should fix whatever they did to the launcher and the app drawer.
LG's UI stuff is on par with TouchWiz from what I've read.

Desire HD is finally here. It's big and heavy but damn it is fast and nice. I just put the stock HTC rom on it (had Vodafone branding)

Can you compare the screen to that of an AMOLED? (assuming you've seen one).

Certainly looks pretty good in your photos.

I have the Samsung S8500 Wave here (S-AMOLED screen) and the colors on Wave are very strong and vibrant but sometimes a little unreal or overly strong (hard to express what i mean). S-Amoled has also a little better contrast. Desire HD (S-LCD screen) seems pale in direct comparison but more "natural" . Still it is a really good screen and videos look sharp and crisp on the big screen.

Here are two crappy camera pics with bad lighting (sorry) for comparison. But both look good in real life. If i could choose i would take an S-AMOLED for every phone, also because it it less power consuming but S-LCD is very good too. I have no comparison to the Iphone 4 Retina screens but there are some Youtube videos.

if they are going to allow custom launchers they need to work with vendors to separate it from the OS so Google can host and push updates for all of their phones (or do it via usb plug in) without having to wait for a reskinned version from the manufacturer. A skin shouldn't be so reliant on the underpinnings of the OS that it delays launches.

I can't see myself buying a phone without OLED.
Every time someone pulls out their new phone to show it I go "The screen looks like shit" :p

I love my Desire with AMOLED

I agree.

If I had one thing to say to Andy and Eric it would be...

"hey if Android is so open, why don't you give the end user choice of what interface they have... AND.. Why are OS skins tied to OS updates?"
I would probably get some BS answer of which I would retort... "just fix it will ya?" :)

@ Donos

Thanks for the comparison images.

I have to say the black levels on any AMOLED screens are so much better. As nubbe stated, I wouldn't buy a phone now that does not have one.

I disagree with Super Amoled being better overall, not just blacks which we all know. Having owned a Galaxy S since it came out, now using an HTC Desire Z, I prefer the Super LCD. It is sharper and crisper than the Super Amoled, the colors look more natural and the battery life is better. Its a myth that Super Amoleds use less battery, that thing sucked battery like it was going out of style. Not to mention I have absolutely no use for Samsung phones after my experiences with the Bell Vibrant. (Has died twice).

It's got to the point know where I am fed up of the performance of my galaxy s. Lag all over the place, and it's pretty embarrassing that my mrs £80 orange san fran multi tasks better than this. I would like to bail out, but I know that nothing else out there will compare to the glory of 'dat screen'. Damn samoled.....

anyone got a motorola defy? Seems to be the best (ie. Cheapest) 3.7" droid out there.

Nb. I know about the various lag fixes, i just don't want to fuck around with something that shouldve been so easy for samsung to sort themselves in the first place.

See my post above yours. :D

The annoying thing with the samoled screen on the Galaxy S is that Samsung used some really bizarre options with regards to colour reproduction and sharpness levels, there are fixes around that tweak the display options and it is leaps and bounds what it shipped with.

But again, just more proof of Samsung's inadequacy I guess.

It's frustrating as under the hood its arguably the best smartphone on the market, its just annoying that its taken Google to step in and re-brand it to show just how it can fly.

An Android 2.2.1-firmware (JPU) for the SGS leaked just a few days ago, and the lag seems to be gone. So I'd suggest you wait a bit longer. Or you can just flash a custom rom and transform your phone into one of the best Android-devices around :D

AMOLED sucks up more power if you have a lot of white on the screen all the time. If you use a black or really dark wallpaper, battery life should improve.

So keep a dark wallpaper... how does that help when using the phone? Like browsing the web, facebook, playing games etc? When you do anything with the phone (galaxy s) using the screen the battery dies very quickly.

AMOLED is nice tech but that doesn't mean that all S-LCDs are crap. Why has it always to be black an white ? I tried the same movie on both the Wave and Desire HD and the DHD looks nice to. Like someone said, the colors look sometimes more realistic with S-LCD.
I thought i read on different sites that AMOLED consumes less power than other screens ? Wasn't that right ?

Dammit. I wanted to have an android Tablet by now. Archos dropped the ball, Viewsonic's is $50 too much for the stock machine and I'm not sure how much I could trust those [nicely spec'd] asian tabs.

Right after Christmas is going to be when we start seeing the tablets... hold on a little further....

Ah ok, that's new to me. I think some (german) reviews state that wrong then.
You don't need only plain black screen to reap the power saving benefits of an OLED screen. The only time it really takes off in power usage is with screens that are predominantly white. Unfortunately a lot of web pages are like this.

How many android phones run stock? I could only find the Huawei Ideos besides the Nexus models (but I couldn't find an Ideos for AT&T's 3G network).
