Yup, looks like the LG Ally is heating up for release on Verizon on May 20th.

Not many specs other than a 3.2 inch screen and Android 2.1, but it seems like stock Android makes this a keeper. Will be interesting to see where the reviews fall on it. Keyboard looks decent enough.

why can't these phones have D-pads on the left side to satisfy gamers? it's more familiar than using a mouse or the directional keys on the right side with a pc.

Yeah. :/

Cliq has one. Hopefully future Moto handsets will as well.

The Ally looks like a Storm. It also looks huge. Interesting it seems to have the N1's 3D launcher, though.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide official: Android 2.1, QWERTY, coming in June

Hey, CLIQ, better check that rear-view mirror, because you've got an interesting competitor coming right up on your tail. T-Mobile is launching another midrange Android QWERTY slider -- some might argue the G1's true successor -- christened the myTouch 3G Slide (not quite the "myTouch Slide" we've been hearing for a few months) with a 3.4-inch HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, and a pretty heavily-customized skin based on Android 2.1. How custom are we talking, exactly? Well, it's not quite like anything we've seen on a production Android device before, featuring a host of custom apps including the "Faves Gallery," a social aggregator for your most dearly beloved contacts; "myModes," a profile manager that can change the phone's themes and settings based on time or location; the Swype keyboard in place of Google's option; and the so-called "Genius Button," which seeks to extend Android's already decent voice command and text-to-speech systems by allowing you to do just about anything on the phone using your voice, hear messages read back to you, and so on. In the myTouch 3G tradition, the Slide will come in a selection of colors when it launches in June -- black, white, or red -- for a to-be-announced price.

What do you guys think of this phone?

Too garrish. Trades the simplicity and single curve of the original MyTouch for a bunch of extra lines and logos. Iffy on the Espresso interface too right now.

Still, the more 2.1 phones with keyboards the merrier!

Looks pretty ugly, and software wise I'm spoiled by HTC Sense. Good for non tech people to get introduced to android.

I don't like the keyboard that much. I'd rather have the number keys separate, instead of sharing with the qwerty row.

And I'll second what another poster said above: Why hasn't a cellphone manufacturer produced a phone with a "joypad" on the left hand side? The cliq got it right, but it needs to be updated. :(

And why does my 3 year old Nokia N95 still have a camera, speakerphone and video playback that runs rings around my Samsung Moment?

If this is priced at 99.99, tmobile has a winner. It's nice to see that there is a selection for mid range phones that don't cost a lot of money imo. It's great for android and google.

Well, there goes that. 3.2 inch screen? I was disappointed when I thought it was 3.5! I don't like the overall look (boring, outdated, chunky looking), or all the big buttons at the bottom, and that keyboard...it may be convenient to remove the ALT out of numbers on keyboards and give them a dedicated number row...but when it means putting the space bar on the last row in the middle of letters...the tradeoff isn't worth it. This is disappointing...but hey, 3 out of 5 Android phones on Verizon are QWERTY sliders, my form of choice, so keep them coming.

Now this phone is gorgeous. I don't think I like how much T-Mobile tinkered with Android this time, but I'd have to use it to know. Spec wise, it's respectable, not every phone has to be a "superphone" and it's not barebones. I'd feel good upgrading from a G1. I really like the look, and the keyboard, and even the color scheme of the keyboard.

It's looking like Android is finally hitting the high-end, mid-range and low-end devices as promised initially. When Android-powered phones costing a similar amount to lowish-spec feature phones start hitting, the phone market's going to change quite substantially, IMO.

Hey guys.. not sure if this is the appropriate thread but I'm somewhat thinking about pulling the trigger on a Chinese-Made iPad knockoff. I was wondering if anyone had any prior experience with Chinese made Android tablets, specifically the 'APad".

Mainly, I'm concerned with the ability to update the tablets to 2.1 (As currently they're 1.6 at the latest. I saw one 2.0 and a few other 2.1s but but they are unappealing or exorbitant in price).

Specs I'm not too concerned with, as Android games are not demanding and future android game titles don't look demanding at all.

What really impressed me was the USB connectivity, meaning I could connect it to keyboards, mice, joysticks and even printers if Android drivers are available. And of course the ever-expanding app market.

I have access to an iPad, which really is the spark to my Android tablet interest.

That myTouch Genius thing just sounds like they rebranded what Android 2.1 voice search already does.

Apparently Engadget says that it's much better.

Also I was wrong, the screen is 3.4 inches but still HVGA.

It would be a complete gamble. I honestly wouldn't expect to see it supported or upgraded.
for under $200 I'm willing to gamble. For now I'm just concerned about the ability to root the device and update it using, say Cyanogen or something similar. Upon more reading, it looks like I won't be able to use the Apps store with the device :(

I found a sweet deal though on one.. and I might make the jump.

Android Market or bust, as I always say. :P Looks nice. I like the looks/features of the KIRF Engadget had a day or two ago.

But the Adam has my heart until it is otherwise dead.

Eh? Shouldn’t one be able to install apps on it?

Android apps can be combined into one fat binary right? I’d like to see devs start making dedicated interfaces for large resolutions. From experience with the iPad, iPhone apps doubled onto the iPad just doesn’t cut it and is not that great of an experience.

Yeah see, this stuff (upscaling the default interface for phones) isn’t gonna cut it.

Yes, Android apps are in a distributable .APK file, however the main (and for the vast majority of apps, only) way of obtaining them (legally) is through the Android Market. There are alternative stores but their app count is much smaller. Thus, having the Market preinstalled is preferred.

And if an app is properly coded for Android 1.6 is should do just fine on 90% of tablets.

Edit- Although yeah, for higher resolutions it'd be nice if they started making more tablet-friendly interfaces.

Goddamn Oprah. I've been waiting years since I lost my iPhone for something to come along and make me want to buy a new phone and the EVO is definitely it.
And I just found out about it and how great android is.
The wait is going to be painful. Cause this is my phone:

I used to have an old Nokia candy bar type phone. That thing was indestructible. This is it (image is too large to post directly here).

Yeah, Oprah having the EVO is not cool at all. That phone needs to be in my hands.

I'm jumping on to Android phones finally. I have narrowed down my selections for these following phones:

- Motorola Milestone/Droid
- Google Nexus One
- HTC Desire
- Xperia X10

I would like to have good camera on my phone. So what's the best one of these fellas ? At the moment I'm leaning towards Nexus One. Any info if xperia will get android 2.1 at some point ?

X10 will be getting 2.1 in Q4 this year. Go for the Desire.

So, my family has been on Verizon for awhile. I'm due for a new phone/upgrade in August. Which Android phone (that's out now or has been announced to be out by then) do you guys recommend?

If a camera is your main focus, get the X10. Far and away the best camera. But know that the X10 has no multitouch and is still on Android 1.6 while the rest of us are on 2.1. Big difference. Also, when the X10 is updated, the rest of the world will probably be on a newer version.

Want a hardware keyboard? Droid.

Don't want a hardware keyboard? Incredible.

There's a chance there will be a new Motorola Android phone, probably the successor to the Droid, out in the Summer. But, they may be holding that for this fall.

Ah, ok. Wasn't sure if there were any more hardware/specs differences between the 2. I thought the Incredible had a 1Ghz Snapdragon?

It does. The Incredible is definitely the faster of the two phones, but some people really like hardware keyboards. If you don't have a preference, go with the Incredible. HTC's software keyboard is great anyways.

Back to square one. I went to the store to test them out and i was dissapointed. Well actially there was nothing wrong with desire nor nexus one but the desing was ugly as sin. And if i'm gonna spend 500-600€ on a phone i want it to look good too. Both phones looked like plastic toys. Xperia looked decent but no multi touch, no sale. They didn't have milestone and that's the only one i haven't seen irl.

It's MOAR than that.

I'll let you know what I can when I get it on Tuesday :3

I disagree with the Nexus one looking like a plastic toy. I played with the Xperia and that device doesn't seem as solidly built as the Nexus. I love the rubber / teflon finish on the Nexus. The Xperia was glossy so prone to smudges. It's a matter of preference.

^^

I agree with this. The X10 feels like a toy, seriously. It's completely plastic, and not the high grade kind either. It feels so flimsy compared to the N1. Still a good device, though.

I'm on the same position as you, but only between the HTC Desire and the Milestone.

I discarded the Xperia for the lack of Multitouch and Android 2.1, and the Nexus One because of availability here (Europe).

The price is not an issue (19€ the Milestone and 39€ the Desire)...

The issue is I love the Milestone design but the Desire Specs... And I want a Dock (the milestone comes with one).

Yeah, I can't say I find the N1 toylike at all. Great fit and finish, texture and heft.

I'll take yours and Andrex's word for it. Based on what was described, it didn't sound like much more than what you can do with a voice search now.

I can see how you might not love the N1's look, but the Desire is hot.
