ordered my droid x today, got my shipping confirmation so it will be waiting for me when I get to work tomorrow. Coming from an iphone 3GS to Droid, hopefully it doesn't take too long to get used to it. Is there one of those official "meet the droid X" threads up yet?

I'm so sick of the "Meet the ____" topics.

I think Andrex said that the meet the whatever should die and just be |OT|.

Yup. I'd do a Droid X thread but I'm cutting back on doing those threads as they should really be done by people who actually have the device in question.

If I were to do the thread, I'd make the title something like:

Verzion DROID X by Motorola |OT| The Empire Strikes Back (at Sprint/HTC)

IMO, the format would ideally be:

[Carrier] [Device] by [Manufacturer] |OT| [Optional: Some witticism about any of the former]

But that's just because I overthink things. :P

Just got the samsung vibrant on tmobile. This screen is gorgeous in person. I think I must have been the only person in my area to get the phone. There were zero ads for it at the store.

I'm liking it so far. No lag. Call quality fine. Reception good. swype is the default keyboard on it. It has a bit if a learning curve but I'm sticking with it. It's fun sliding around for typing.

I almost didn't get the phone because we all know there's something better on the horizon...(and samsung support on phones hasn't been great) but hey....there's always something better coming out for phones every month. Since a variant of this phone is being released for all carriers, I feel like samsung will show more support.
Welcome to the Android social! If you were here last night, you read my praise for the Galaxy S line. And hey, if the software is annoying, at least you have options to root.

I still use what came with my Incredible, and have no plans to change. It's all part of taking in the unique experience of your phone! Then again, maybe I'm satisfied because Sense is so sweet.

well I went ahead and made the thread since I'm getting the phone

Dude, you're awesome. Thanks for indulging my crazed OCD-ish title obsession. :D

no prob, just couldn't think of anything witty to include after |OT|. Probably should have put something like good luck rooting this bitch or something :lol

Incredible getting OTA update supposedly tomorrow. It's supposed to add the new droid animation on startup, 720p video recording, and mobile 3G hotspot. Other additions include better sound quality and some widget add ons.

Has anyone had any experience with the HTC Wildfire yet? Could you please let me know if it plays youtube videos correctly? The reason I'm asking is that engadget's review was showing video playback (through HTC flash) and it was incredibly slow. I doubt the youtube apps is that slow but better safe than sorry.

I'm in china and kind of wanting a smart phone. They've got the Samsung Galaxy i9000 S or whatever it is over here and I was wondering if that was a good phone to pick up? I could get an unlocked iphone as well, but i'd enjoy the more open android.

also what is rooting? same thing as CFW?

I asked this question in the Nexus one thread, but that one isn't very active. Basically I'm in a bit of a pickle deciding what to do for my next phone. My original strategy was to wait-and-see for Project Emerald, as well as see what the situation is regarding iPhone 4 issues. That would put me out at least a few months to see Emerald, and if I want to wait for actual user impressions, I'm looking at November.

Where the issue comes ... my fall back was to be the Nexus One. Now with Google saying goodbye to it, I'm not sure what to do. Help me gaf :o

I'm considering just saying fuck it, and buying it now. I have 30 days to return it, correct? Anyone that has a Nexus One, how do you feel about it now having had plenty of time with it?

Rooting is getting root permissions. (like, OS)

The analogy of CFW is probably custom ROMs, which you need to root your phone before you can install them.

Anyone have recommendations for a pair of headphones with a mic? Leaning towards these 2:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036SH8R6/?tag=neogaf0e-20

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036SH8SA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

My recommendation would be the Nuforce NE-7M
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BL8BO4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Caveats: it's double the price of the ones you are looking at and doesn't have any music controls (just one button for answering calls).

However, it has some of the best sound quality in the < $50 price bracket, even including headphones without mics. The microphone works pretty good too. I just tested it with voice search, and it correctly understood when I said "onomatopoeia" on the first try (god, I love voice search :lol ).

Ugh don't wanna spend that much for a headset. I won't be using it that much.

Damn, no new Project Emerald news? I've got a grandfathered plan with T-Mo that I'm not giving up and looking to get a premium Android phone by year's end.

Had Nexus One since launch and I still love it. Phones are just now (after 6 months) marginally beating it in the hardware space, but it still has the advantage of getting official Android updates first. We have Froyo months before any other device gets it..... And it's worth it. Google has indicated that this will still be their developer phone, so I figure I can count on timely updates as long as that's the case.

Thanks, can all Android phones be rooted?

And does anyone know if the Galaxy S i9000 is a good phone? I'd really love some impressions.

Got a samsung captivate today and it doesn't get images from others in my family with iphone4s. It just says downloading and does nothing. It also doesn't send images to the iPhones either. Any ideas? This also applies to video being sent either way.

You can return it, but there's a ~$45 restocking charge.

My short time with the MyTouch Slide.

So I've been using the MyTouch Slide for a few days now and, for me anyway, this is the best phone on T-Mobile. It's really really fast in part due to the lower res and smaller screen size, it actually runs on par with phones like the Nexus one in many GPU benchmarks. Hopefully, we can root AOS 2.2 and OC to 800Mhz - 1000Mhz if we decide the phone needs it before the two year contract is up. Still would have preferred a PowerVR GPU and a faster processor though but, we can't have everything.

The software on this thing is just simply top notch. The Genius button actually works, Swype is amazing, the screen is really pretty although hard to see in bright daylight, the camera is decent with a very bright flash, the video recording is decent, the sound quality is very very good, better than any of my stand alone MP3 players actually, and the battery life is nice. I also, love the fact that I can use the keyboard when surfing the net or playing games so as not to waste screen space. Yep, this phone is the upgrade for a G1 user. It also comes with a nice set of headphones that have the pause/fast/rewind buttons on the cord. They aren't as nice sounding as my Yuin PK's but they sound way better than anything you might find at your local walmart.

There are just so many widgets and stuff built into this phone that make it great. And so much stuff that you simply have to find out for yourself by playing around with the phone. For instance, the phone comes with a nice weather app that shows a neat animation depending on the weather. However, if you turn that one off then go into the widgets section and access the clock you can select a weather app / clock app that shows the weather animation over the entire screen right over all your shortcuts, it looks really slick. There is just tons of stuff like this all over the phone. Like the MP3 player can be accessed while the phone is screen locked! They hard keyboard actually has a home button and back buttons which are great for net surfing.

I also love the myModes feature that will actually work with location. So if I end up at the grocery store by accident it will switch to my shopping mode and bring up my little shopping list I made a few days before. Once I leave the store and get in the car it changes back, or I can just simply give a voice command to switch modes on the fly. The thing will even read text messages aloud to me while driving if I want. And I don't mean just read them I mean when I get the message it asks me if I want it read to me, then proceeds to read it aloud.

I also just picked up the new kickstand case from T-Mobile and can now stand the phone on horizontally or vertically for watching videos. The case also adds a bit more grip and weight to the phone that gives it a better feel than just the phone itself.

I know this phone doesn't do 720p video, as if 720p video on a phone is going to look anything remotely like it does on my HV30 lol, it doesn't have a 4"+ high res screen, and it doesn't have a 1ghz snapdragon with a powervr gpu, but honestly, I don't miss any of those things what-so-ever. The phone is blazing fast, the screen looks great, the software is top notch, and it has a great real keyboard on it. The sound quality is very good including the speaker, and the camera has a nice flash and ISO settings. It's just a great all around phone.

However, if you can live without the keyboard and prefer a more gaming capable phone you might want to look into the Galaxy, Nexus, or something else. I know most of you on gaf are game oriented and may not want this kind of phone and that's totally understandable. Me personally, this is the phone for me. It just has the ability to change hats at a moments notice, like myself, and it wears each hat very well.

I don't phone anymore, iSlide.

International question:
I have some relatives visiting from Turkey and I am interested in getting one of them a Nexus One. Will the market work over in Turkey? Will he even be able register a Turkish gmail account? I haven't asked him what he knows about smartphones there because I am trying not to let him know I want to get him the phone (he would want to talk me out of it). I know paid apps might not be available but it'd be nice if he could get the free apps.

Anyway, just wondering how US bought Android phones function in other markets.

no, I don't think so. And even if they are rooted, it doesnt mean you can install custom ROMs. You can do both on the Galaxy S though. Actually, it felt like that got rooted before release date (but prolly not, within a couple of days?) Clearly, Samsung doth not care.

Hey guys, what are some good AWS/1700MHz Android phones? I really had my eye set on an HTC Legend but for the life of me I can't find a good plan that won't cost me north of $65/month. The only other option I have is WIND, but they're on the AWS band and the Legend isn't compatible. What good Android phone choices do I have that are compatible with AWS?

If there's a defect I would think you could get the restocking fee waived (assuming you just didn't get a replacement)

The problem is after a replacement or two, if you are still having issues will it actually be considered a refundable problem?

Looking for something less than $700 Canadian :P

$527.00 US for phone
$25.00 US shipping if I recall

= $582 CDN Give or take a few (current exchange rate)

*edit + taxes I guess, trying to find what mine cost.

$577.43 and $35 and change at pickup for brokerage fee. (GST only though, Alberta)

:D

I ordered my Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) this morning from Lets Talk. Already shipped!

Best part? FREE! Free overnight ship, free activation, free phone, no tax.

The benchmarks put this as the fastest phone out there (all using 2.1). Samsung made it really easy to root. You can bypass touchwiz (although it is supposed to be good actually) with two apps (you can use launcher pro without a root). Also can sideload without a root.

After I tried the phone out, I was sold. Very precise touch, awesome looking screen, perfect size.

So, after experiencing AT&T's woeful service yet again this past weekend, I've decided to DUMP my iPhone 4. I've had it since launch, on June 24, and and going to be returning it this week. Too many dropped calls, too many issues.

So...

I ordered a Droid Incredible, which from what the manager at my local Verizon told me, will be in stock tomorrow. I've read a ton of stuff on the Incredible and the Droid X, but from what I've heard the Incredible is definitely the better phone. It's a little smaller, which I prefer, but overall they appear to be the same.

This is a BIG deal for me. I use the phone for Microsoft Exchange support for work...so I'm nervous about how smooth the transition will be. Any ideas or thoughts? I need some extra convincing, as I could easily just stay with the iPhone 4. Help!!!

That's probably not all AT&T's doing.

I didn't realize the problems iPhone's have until talking to one of my buddies about the iPhone 4 issues (we were specifically going over the implications of the 1 extra drop per 100 stat). He asked how many calls I drop since I've had AT&T for ~4 years, with two different phones. I said, I don't know .... maybe a dozen?

He had a bogus look on his face, and just said oh. I pressed him, and he said he definitely drops at a higher rate than that. Note, he has a 3GS.

Even though I was doing okay with AT&T, I always blamed iPhone's problems on the network. It seems it isn't entirely their fault.

Superblatt said:
Either way, everything tells me Verizon's service is better. Do you not agree? Should I not make the switch? I've got to make the jump tomorrow or not.

Sorry, see my edit.

As for my recommendation, I'd try and get as many anecdotes from people that use both services in your area. In general though, I'd say yeah Verizon has the better coverage ... but it can come down to where you live/work, what sort of specific plan you need, what phone you want, and what discounts you can get.

For me previously, AT&T made the most sense and I really haven't had any serious issues with it. I however am open to changing myself. I might actually jump on T-Mobile next. Not quite sure yet.

any thoughts though on the Incredible?

I haven't looked too in depth into the current models, but judging from the specs it certainly seems like a nice phone if you like the form-factor.

Having not read up on user impressions, I'm not sure if there are any problems with it. You should probably read up on it a bit. Seems to be one of the phones to beat though

I was off contract and I willingly went back to AT&T for an Android phone (Captivate, see above).

Why? I haven't had any issues that people talk about where I live or the places I have traveled for the most part.

Once and awhile I get a drop, but I have had that when I had verizon and when I had sprint. I like GSM with a SIM card.

I did notice that side by side, my Nokia was WAY better than my friends 3GS. I was next to him and it cut out a few times, popped, static, I was rock solid.

That's still a lot of money for a phone. The HTC Legend + tax + unlocking would have been ~$400, something i'm more comfortable with. Any other options or any plans for an AWS Legend?

Any of you Samsung Captivate people out there wanna give me some more impressions?

I'm EXTREMELY interested in this phone, but I've seen mixed opinions from what I've read.

Like Ptaaty, I also got the Captivate from Let's Talk with their "Free" deal going on. I ordered it Sunday, it shipped today, and I will have it tomorrow. I'm nearing the end of my contract with my iPhone 3G, so I was going to need an upgrade anyway, and I've been wanting to move to Android. This seems like a great phone, and I've always had good luck with Samsung products. Once I get it, I'll let you know what I think.
