Depends if you want a physical keyboard(Droid 2) or a bigger screen(Droid X) sounds like a great idea to me imo, I went with the Droid X and love it.

is that the only thing that sets the droid 2.0 apart?

i dont think id mind using a virtual keypad after seein the demo of swype

Well there are others,

Droid X
Camera: 8MP 720p Video
HDMI
16GB MicroSD card included

Droid 2:
Camera: 5MP no 720p(I believe)
no HDMI
8GB MicroSD card included

Other than that they both share the same hardware i.e same amount of memory and same processor/gpu. Swype is awesome it's what I use on my Droid X, the multi touch keyboard is pretty good too.

I just got a Droid X after coming off a enV touch. Its a little weird not having a physical keyboard but swype works amazingly. The only thing I lost with not having a keyboard is the ability to text and drive (which is probably a good thing). If I absolutely have to get a message out though I just use the voice recognition to send the text. It works pretty well.

So after reading your guys' replies I went into the verizon store to check it out. Its rather large, but I figure I wont need to be hauling around my ipod, phone AND camera. Just one device. I just gotta call tmobile today and see if my contract is up, which i believe it is. Switching to verizon sounds good to me especially with the five favorites.

You might be actually right. Today I was driving and using swype and I could very sloppily swype with my thumb and not look at the screen and still get the correct words. Swype is even better then I thought :lol

I don't have large issues with gps lock, but it could be better for sure.

What lag? I am assuming you mean the slight stutters?

If you want this thing absolutely perfectly smooth, use launcher pro and do not use live wallpapers. Butter.

There is often a delay when creating a shortcut and calling up the full list of apps (might be normal). Otherwise my captivate is perfectly smooth and very fast for everything. Launcher pro was a big help, but going to no live wallpaper finished it off to perfect.

After moving to a dark background and a few tweaks to the syncs, my battery life is really good.

Also others have said it, but SWYPE is freaking amazing. I have always disliked touch type, but swype is really fast and works great.

Sounds surprisingly usable. For $150 that actually sounds like a deal. They do need to get Market working 100% though, except Google probably is pissed about it. :lol

I would imagine that Google would eventually make something to make market available for tablets. Or make a section in the Android Market for tablets.

So, I'm thinking about importing a International Galaxy S, as they're not available down here where I live. Since the Galaxy S has a unlocked bootloader and all the other features we all know so well, there's nothing in the near future that appeals to me as it does. The Droid X has a way too big screen and a locked bootloader, Droid 2 is coming but i don't really care for Motorola Phones.

There's already Galaxy S "alternate" firmwares showing up, without the TouchWiz interface, which was the thing that was making me reconsider my decision. The only real drawback that I can see with it is the camera: Only 5 megapixel (even tho it records 720p) and no LED Flash at all (WTF?).

The other features kinda make up for it tho. 8 gig + 1ghz processor is a real nice combo, and the OLED screen is all kinds of awesomeness.

Any overall thoughts from the android-GAF-collective on the subject?

I was concerned with the camera, specifically the lack of flash, before I bought my Galaxy S, but I have to say that the image quality on the camera is very good, even in low light. My last camera had 3.2mp + Flash but the image quality was totally piss poor (even with Carl Zeiss lens) and my girfriend's HTC Hero is 5mp but is absolutely awful unless you're in broad daylight. Compared to them the Galaxy S is miles ahead in terms of image quality and colour reproduction, even without the led flash. The only place where its going to struggle is in nightclubs or concerts where light levels are at a real minimum, but otherwise I've been very, very happy with the results.

Seriously leaning towards a captivate when it comes on Rogers. Hopefully the nexus two rumors will have come to fruition or fizzled out by the time it launches so I can be absolutely sure I'm getting what i really want.

I've seen some pictures, but nothing out of the ordinary (aka, a photo any cellphone camera would be able to take), and since the Phone is not available down here where I live, I can't demo it properly (like I did with the N95 and noticed the camera quality was piss poor)

It's really good to hear that the camera is so nice. It's getting harder and harder to resist this phone.. :D

I think a better question would be what's not nice about it. The phone seems pretty awesome from what I have seen. Will likely be selling my nexus one and getting a galaxy s.

I can't speak about the International Galaxy S but the Captivate is a really nice phone. The screen is really lush. It has a solid build (plastic included.) Although touchwiz isn't the most visually appealing thing, it can all be changed with launcher pro. Touchwiz does add some really cool features to android (swipes to call/text; toggles in the pull down notification bar.)

This is my second Android phone (first being Nexus One which I returned before the 30 day period) and I really enjoy it. There hasn't been any glaring problems with the phone. After being with the iPhone for 2 years, it is a fresh change.

I can't really say for sure, but from what i've been researching, the american versions of the Galaxy S (Captivate and Vibrant) are essentially the same phones as the International Galaxy S, with some small cosmetic differences on the outside shell and a buncha proprietary bullshit software, which I think you can't delete through normal means, from each operator and their partners (like 4 different music stores from AT&T and their partners on the Captivate model).

However, firmware hacks and all the rooting were researched first on the International version and, since the International Firmware is not compatible with either Captivate or Vibrant, later ported to the US versions.

Edit: Oh, that's right. There's some frequencies differences and the Captivate (AT&T) don't have front facing camera or Radio,

Front facing camera, huge Super Amoled Screen that has all the perks of Amoled with very few of the downfalls, Android 2.1 with promises of 2.2 soon, 1ghz processor that performs better than the snapdragon, optical trackpad.

All in all, first titan Android phone in Canada (on contract).

If anyone with a captivate or perhaps even any version of a galaxy s can help me out I'd really appreciate it. On my captivate when browsing sites like neogaf mobile via secondapps or lifehacker mobile anytime I touch the screen to scroll there is a slight change in the tint of the screen. For example, on secondapps the grey bars that have usernames on them turn very slightly reddish/orange. On lifehacker the site goes from a very light yellow to a slightly more white color. It is driving me kinda crazy that everytime I touch the screen to scroll the color is shifting. Trying to figure out if this is a problem with just my specific phone and whether I should exchange it.

I'm fairly sure it's a problem with android. I get the same thing on my Incredible.

My new Captivate should be here Monday. Have a big list of things to do with it when it arrives (Rooting, Bloatware Removal, Sideloading, Unlocked Market, LauncherPro, etc.), very excited!

Damn it, seems everyone's sold out of the damn HTC Legend (or at least the places i've checked). Anyone know if there are any available anywhere in Toronto?

Try another browser. I'm using the vibrant on tmobile and have the same issue...but when I use Opera mini it doesn't happen.

Why bother with the Legend when the Galaxy S Vibrant is juuuuust around the corner??

It happens on my Evo, which is TFT LCD. It doesn't bother me anymore, though.
I don't see this at all on my EVO.

Is it only happening in the browser? Maybe try another browser? By default graphics drop slightly in resolution when scrolling in most browsers, and that can cause dithering, so perhaps its just the way certain screens are implementing the dithering patterns that is causing what appears too be a change in tint.

For example I can see the secondapp version of GAF dither the blocks with usernames in them when I scroll, but on my evo that doesn't visibly make the tint look different.

Shit :lol

I got called over to my stores Mobile Department (because I'm known as the Android nerd of the store) because a customer had a loooot of questions about the Galaxy S - I answered pretty much all of them, and even showed him how to do it on the phone demo we had (I had to play it by ear, but I figured it all out quickly enough) - only problem is, I told him about the speech to text feature, but I could not find it on the phone!!! The hell? I know it's supposed to appear whenever you have a text input field - but I could not find it, I even checked the settings, and all I could find was a greyed out button saying "Install text to speech data?" - implying it's already been installed, and that's the opposite of what I want.

Does the Vibrant not have that feature installed natively or what?

So the Galaxy S on AT&T... Can you turn off the TouchWiz UI in the settings like you can turn off the sense UI on other phones?

Afaik, TouchWiz is something prebaked into the firmware. You cannot turn it off. You can, however, install something else that will diminish the effects of TouchWiz on your phone, but it will always be there.

Unless you install an alternate firmware that comes without it.

On a related note, I bought the Galaxy S last week on ebay. Now the waiting game starts! :D

You can't turn it off completely, but you can install LauncherPro or ADW which almost erases it from the phone. It's like a whole new device, honestly.

Good enough for me. :D

Any information on fall releases? I can upgrade in October on Sprint and am looking at the Epic but knowing the phone market, something bigger and brighter is always around the corner.

My mom might end up getting US Cellulars Android phone, and I cant possibly have my mom having a better phone than me.

i'm looking at jumping ship to Verizon this holiday season, i need to get tuned in on the news and see if there are any Q1 LTE Android devices on the schedule... don't want to buy something and have an LTE device release in Feb. I'm tired of ATT, I can't go anywhere outside of a major city and still have 3g. Its all well and good that its faster then verizon, but if i can only use when i'm in a city (to be fair, i do live in one, but travel to family basically shits it up for me).

That and they basically got really quiet on HSPA+ or speed upgrades AND LTE migration.

Soo...

The Captivate is only $89.99 through Amazon Wireless.

Anyone have experience going through them before? It only seems too good to be true..

You can't upgrade to that as far as I know, you have to be a new customer to AT&T. Not sure if any other strings be attached, but usually I'm wary of buying from anyone other than AT&T directly.

Could try calling AT&T, but I doubt you get a straight answer.
