Gizmodo states that the HTC US contacted them and said that the Desire HD will be "shipping in North America later this year"

Had a play of the 'Z' and Desire HD yesterday. Both very nice.

Thanks for the free booze and nibbles HTC. :) You've made sure my next phone will be a HTC! :D

Android Gains Market Share on Everyone Else [REPORT]

http://mashable.com/2010/09/16/android-comscore-july-2010/

In the summer, when Apple usually releases a new version of iPhone, its overall mobile sales and market share are expected to jump up. However, despite reports of iPhone 4 selling really well, it doesn’t seem to be selling fast enough to keep Apple from losing market share to Android.

According to comScore, Android gained 5% market share in the period from April to July 2010, while all other smartphone platforms declined: RIM lost 1.8%, Microsoft lost 2.2% and Apple lost 1.3%.

Nice to see Android putting it to the competitors. This should hopefully stimulate even more competition.

At first I was pretty surprised by this, but then I thought, most people who want an iPhone would have gotten one by now, whether it's the original, 3g, 3gs, 4, whatever so I guess it's not that surprising. Still good news for Android. :D

i'm like a fickle bitch with att or verizon, i am now back into the verizon camp... any new phones coming up for Verizon? Going to break my contract (only a few months left) and make the jump

its just hard to give up the nexus one

Why not wait it out gcubed? The newer phones coming out in Q1 are going to be a night and day difference from the phones now including the N1. I'm specifically waiting until Jan/Feb and hoping on the DC phones w/ better battery and hopefully Android 3.x.

trying to :) thats the goal, but i think i'm definitely going to switch, kinda tired of ATT, my biggest gripe is its inability to function in concentrated population areas (stadiums/concerts)... then it goes down to lack of 3g area (its getting better), and no roadmap currently for LTE whereas i'm covered in the first wave for Verizon... which then will turn it into, why don't you wait another month or two until the LTE phones come out gcubed. :D

the performance of the n1 isn't what keeps me, its the quick updates.

Seriously considering my upgrade to be the Desire HD. But... What are the "next gen" phones. Is this it?

It's either this or the Dell Lightning. (My contracts up in the new year).

In my opinion, its a quirky time to upgrade...first gen WinMo 7 phones are right around the corner, as well as high-end android sets. However, first gen LTE devices are coming fast too next year. However, they might not be as awesome as we think

Heavy decisions everywhere

i have no ambition to go to WinMo7, but the dual core, then jumping to LTE is whats making the timing hard

There has to be some sort of save-state going on there. There is no way that's a clean, full boot up.

Apparently it is, according to this T3 article

1/ HTC Smart Boot

HTC phones of the past have taken a mini-age to get running, so boot times have now been cut from 45 seconds down to 12 according to HTC. That should comforatbly make it the fastest ever for a Sense UI phone to get powered up.

And from the looks of that video, HTC have pulled it off!

Another thing I love about the Desire Z, hardware camera button finally makes a return :D

I'm just about to upgrade again (early October) and I'm on Verizon as well. Is it worth waiting? I haven't seen much news on handsets that have interested me, and right now the only android phone I really like is the Droid Incredible. I haven't liked the stock android from what I've played around with, but Sense seems great. And I'm not sure I want a gigantor phone like the Desire Z, but maybe. Definitely don't want a hardware keyboard. Any advice?

I want to get a Captivate but Rogers up here seems to think it's cool to announce phones and then be all oh we don't know when it's actually coming out about it. So I was debating switching to Bell and getting a Vibrant.

Am I insane, impatient or should I do it?
training has started for the phone so I imagine it will launch on the 24th with the torch. I'm in the same boat. fuckin' frustrating.

You won't be disappointed with the Incredible. I'm with you on liking Sense. There are a bunch of people on here who say they don't like Sense and swear by stock Android, but then end up buying all these widgets and it ends up looking like Sense UI :lol (Beautiful Widgets, Launcher Pro Plus, etc.) But if you decide later, you want to try stock Android, you can always root and install Vanilla ROMS.

That being said, I'm sure the next flagship HTC phone is gonna be released on Verizon this fall, so it might be prudent to wait it out a couple months.

My problems with Sense lie elsewhere. Maybe it's better on the Incredible, but the Eris has terrible lag, especially with the dialer and the HTC contacts. But maybe that's just the Eris and unrelated to Sense. idk

The lag is because of the horribly slow hardware in the Eris. You could put stock android on that phone, and it wouldn't do anything for it. Hell, even the Moto Droid with stock android had lag and that phone's hardware is way better than the Eris.

The best features of Sense for me is

HTC Mail (for ActiveSync, tried the 2.2 Android Email and it sucks and I don't wanna pay $20 for Touchdown)

The wifi Galaxy Tab has me interested. Samsung seems to be taking them seriously with the UI and services so I hope they come up with an app store solution.

I'd really like to get an android phone on at&t since that's where my family plan currently is that I'm on. I'm just not sold on the captivate yet with it's issues like the gps problem and the random shutdowns.

It sucks though since it's AT&T and iphone land I've got like one descent choice android wise with nothing on the horizon either. :(

You talking about this bad boy:

I cant wait to hear the full specs and price on this bad boy. 4" screen, slide out qwerty keyboard. Basically what the droid 2 should have been.

For starters, it has a 1.2GHz processor.

That said, it's unclear whether this will actually be HTC's flagship for this year. T-Mobile's project emerald may end up taking that crown.

If that's the next flagship phone then I'll go with the Incredible. I don't see the point in physical keyboards anymore, and 4" is gigantic. Do phones that big (like the Evo 4G) fit easily in pockets?

Evo is 4.3" not 4". From impressions I've read, it's fine in normal pants.

To me 4" is the sweet-spot, though I'm not sure the point of a qwerty with it. Actually, does anyone have a list of what 4" phones are available?

I'm in the exact same situation as you. I'm probably going to bite on the Captivate though.

Buddy on vent (YodaJM) got his on wed, but he wasn't on last night to see if his phone was sans issues outside of the gps problem.

IDK is it to much to ask for just ONE other choice for me on AT&T? Guess that's what Win 7 Phone is trying to do for them.

Fine for me. Didn't have any problems.

Keyboard on 'Z' didn't have chance to try out, just played with menus.

I'd definately go for the HD over a 'Z' - I'm a one handed user (which is why I'm not fussed about missing multi-touch on my X10), so I'd never use the keypad anyway. But if your a prolific texter, then it's the handset for you.

Okay, I wasn't sure. And yes, HTC Mail with ActiveSync is awesome. :D

If you find out, let me know. I'm getting very close to getting one and it would be nice to know if it still has issues.

My wife has had the phone for over a month now, what do you need to know?

The screen is the best in the market imo, it runs quickly, runs 2.1, bloatware is easy to remove/hide, occasionally temperamental, but no more than my nexus one and I imagine other android phones. Easily the second best phone on at&t, and the best one if you don't want an iphone.

Just want to share my post from another forum. (Recently got my Galaxy S back from repair)

Well... my buddy at work who picked up his Galaxy S a week or so after me.. his died Friday night. Had to send it for repair. Just got mine back on Friday from repair.

I really like this phone but I can't say that I am overly impressed with Samsung's quality. I feel bad to as he picked up the phone after seeing mine. The Bell rep at the store told him of the 40 they have sold 20 have come back. There are obviously some major issues with this phone. Maybe its just the first batch? I don't know.

Needless to say I will not be recommending any Samsung phones in the future.

Not too impressed. I am now worried if mine will actually die again.. or even last more than a year.

My Galaxy S is fine, but it does get a bit warm at the back. Should I be worried?

I dunno, mine was warm sometimes too. Gets warm now after it was repaired. When it crapped out it was asleep for a while so I don't think heat has anything to do with it. Its a faulty part judging by my repair ticket. "Replaced major component".

The sad thing is when I first got my Galaxy S everyone who saw it was like "wow" the screen is so awesome. A few were considering getting one, one did, we all know what happened to his. The others are no longer going near a Samsung phone. I will not be bragging about my phone to anyone at this point.

My wife's phone gets hot too, I think it's normal because the back is metal so it conducts heat. She had a scare where it wouldn't turn on the other day, even after she plugged it in to the wall, but when she brought it home, I took out the battery, put it back in, and voila, good as new. Hasn't happened again.

Oh, and I should mention that, like many other android phones, the Captivate has abysmal battery life when you activate all the cool stuff like sync fb, twitter, set email to check frequently, etc. That's not as big a problem on my N1 since it charges quickly, but boy does the Captivate take forever to charge!

All that said, I would recommend the phone to anyone who's even halfway tech savvy, since my wife's phone hasn't shown any signs of dying or anything. It's a fantastic phone all things considered, the screen is to die for, and everything runs quickly. Once it gets Froyo (and Samsung fixes all the GPS bugs it supposedly has and speeds up its UI) this phone will be even easier to recommend, unless the reports of dying phones continues.
