So other than the huge internal memory (which seemingly removes the external memory option) why would anyone get excited over this phone? At least give us a dual core processor...

what its not dual core ? forget it

- no SD slot;
- same cheap plastic case as in Galaxy S;
- no 4G;
- NFC useless for the moment.

Edit:
Comparing the Nexus One to the S:

http://www.google.com/phone/compare/?phone=nexus-s&phone=nexus-one

I think the Nexus One still holds it's own.
I'm going to hold off for another six months and see what happens.
If for whatever reason Honeycomb is not coming to the Nexus One I might jump ship, but I have my doubts that's going to be the scenario.

As a former Nexus One owner.... Don't do this. I would wait at least a month. :lol

the single issue i have with my n1 is the touch screen... its the main reason why i want to get rid of it, but i keep waiting. There is also a million reasons why the Nexus S isn't going to mirror those issues... this will be just another phone launch

No I know... but reading up on the lack of features on it is going to leave a lot of people pissed and wondering why they left out key components. I guess I'm saying... don't buy into the hype just because it has 2.3 and a nifty new hardware chassis.

yes, the lack of extra oomph is sad when we are going to get some hardcore phones in a few weeks. The NFC is nice, the extra sensors, the nice screen... and of course the nexus branding... but its just missing everything else. I wish it would have had an HSDPA+ radio in it even without the dual core.

Still 99% of games are going to be built with this as a reference for the next year, so i'm not sure how crazy tegra 2 phones are going to end up being

Everything I'm reading is that the Tegra 2 phones are the next gen of Android. If people were worried about 1.5 or 1.6 being left in the dust, 2.x is going to look like a joke compared to some of the features I've seen being worked on for 3.x.

I believe this will be the standard hardware for what games are targetting. The GPU is the same as iPhone/iPad and rest of Galaxy S line. Tegra 2 might bring higher framerates but that´s it.

Possibly, but I would speculate that Tegra 2 will be pushing Android 3.x further forward (think tablets) with more advanced GPU functions as well as for gaming.

I'm really curious to get the confirmed specs of the SE PSPhone to see what it will have under the hood.

So I was going to just go with an Orange San Francisco for Christmas and upgrade in 6 months to a year, but this is really really tempting.
There is ALWAYS something to wait for in technology, and this seems to be such a flagship mode,l am I stupid for wanting to jump on now? Currently using a Nokia 5800 which is like most basic touch screen phone you can get lol.

That's what I was thinking.. Makes me feel better about getting a Galaxy S phone for my upgrade in December and not waiting for a dual core phone. I really need to get a new phone, and waiting one more month just seems unbearable, especially if the newly released 'developer phone' has more or less the same specs as a Galaxy S.

Disappointing as fuck. Vanilla Galaxy S. It doesn't do what the Nexus One did to the Android scene. I won't be upgrading my Nexus One.

This looks very similar to my galaxy 3 which I like very much. Won't upgrade though.

So are there plans to bring the nexus s to other carriers besides tmobile eventually?
On the site it seems like it will be for T-mobile and AT&T as they specifically mention GSM but that is not confirmed.

An ATT variant is almost guaranteed, just like the N1. Also Samsung loves to saturate the market with different bands on its devices

wtf at no sd card. I have over 16gb of music and was going to change from a 3gs to android. No buy for me now.
Not to worry with the slew of new phones coming out here in less than a month.

Like Pctx says, there will be tons of new Android phones being released in the first half of next year that will probably equal and surpass the Nexus S's spec sheet. Unless you really wanted stock Android.

I know it's software related, but this is specific to the PSPhone.

Gingerbread keyboard code includes Playstation buttons

konami_code.png

:D

In a bit of awesome news, the android.view.KeyEvent class (that's geek speak for keyboard controls in the code) in Android 2.3 has been updated to include support for what looks like Playstation phone controls. Included are new fields for buttons named A,B,C, L1, L2, R1, R2, select, start, X, Y, and Z. All I can say, is Konami Code lockscreen password FTW. [Android Developers] Thanks, Nick!

I can see how some people are dissapointed with Nexus S and I think that androidandme is to be blamed for spreading rumours about dual-core Nexus S which have not been fullfilled. But new Nesus has nothing to be shy about:
- Hummingbird chip - the best SoC currently avalible in any smartphone on the market (alongside S. Galaxy)
- 4'' SAMOLED screen - the best screen on Android smartphones, possibly best overall (alongside S. Galaxy)
- stock Android 2.3 - best software option you can get with Android (alongside Nexus One)

There are better smartphones when it comes to RAM, camera and storage but I still don't think that any Android phone can match Galaxy S combined hardware and software strengths (other Nexus S strong points are front-facing camera, big battery and slim form factor).

I don't really think we are going to see dual-core phones anytime soon. The talk that 'they are just around the corner' lasts for at least half a year if not more. I think that especially unbelivable are LG/Tegra rumours/concpet phones. LG never made super phone and I don't even know of any mid-end smartphone in their portfolio. Similary Nvidia chips never caught traction in smartphone market and I wouldn't expect them to become a leaders out of nowhere.

I think that Qualcomm will be the first to offer dual-cores but I expect them to release higher clocked Snapdragons before - they hit 1Ghz mark on 65 nm process and I think it should be expected from them to speed up things a bit as they finally switched to 45 nm (unless upgrade to Adreno 205 took all die real estate but I think its unlikely scenario).

No one doubts it'll be the best phone available when it releases, it's just disappointing that a "flagship" phone has no truly revolutionary features. It'll be outdated hardware wise much sooner than the Nexus One was.

Looking at the Nexus S I notice one thing. THE BUTTONS ARE IN A DIFFERENT ORDER!! I can understand different companies moving around the 4 buttons or opting for a 3 button setup, but the Nexus One and the Nexus S have different button layouts.

I know its not that big of a deal...but, yeah.

Thats true but i was hoping for a nice vanilla OS and not having to wait months for updates. C'est la vie.
I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another 'Google Experience' phone from Moto next year.

Was wondering what people thought of me running the 2011 thread for Android?

Andrex is banned and I was going to use some of his images for the new thread to keep continuity but aside from that come up with some other graphics.

Anyone else claimed it or want to help out?

I have no issues ...just as long as you don't get burnt with the hardware like last time. :lol

Also...should be a smartphone thread and a separate tablet one.

:lol Yeah...hopefully I won't get burned. :D I'm dropping my 3GS in Jan/Feb and getting back on the Android platform and looking forward to it.

Having a Android Smartphone Hardware Thread 2011 and a Android Tablet Hardware Thread 2011 makes sense to me.

I really doubt it will be outdated soon. Phones similary speced to Nexus One were released not too long after Nexus (HTC Desire and SE Xperia X10 debuted in March and if we count non-Android phones HD2 was released in November 2009) and it was finally overshadowed in June with Galaxy S and Evo 4G. There will be similar phones to Nesus S (hardware wise) but I wouldn't expect anything with 3 times more powerful graphics in 5 months from now.

Seriously who's fucking decision was this to release such a phone? Nowhere near the improvement I came to expect of the Nexus sequel, what a let down.

qftmft

I love the 16gb internal mem idea (faster loading, and less moving parts), but no dual core? tegra 2? and no hsdpa+? And i'm not evening complaining about the lack of 720p and 5mp camera. This phone IS a total let down. Waiting for another manufacturer to release a google phone...(hopefully) Getting sick of my nexus1 out true multi-touch

I'd be happy to help out, in any way possible

FIRST GD COMMENT!! :lol

:lol :lol :lol

Oh snap :lol

Honestly, I don't mind the hardware specs. It's just debateable whether the phone is worth NFC, Gingerbread, and a few other things. They probably fixed the compass/GPS compared to the original Galaxy S too.

Got a "free" G2 last week on one of my two lines that I'm currently using. Was holding upgrading my line until the Nexus S was announced all proper.. now I rather just get the mytouch 4G instead.:lol

No HSPA+ is one thing. I could have lived without it. But no microSD slot? LOL. Don't get me wrong, I'd still buy it for sub-400 bucks. Just wouldn't use/waste an upgrade slot on it. Girlfriend said I could use the G2 till the end of January so I guess I'll wait till then to explore my options.

Disappointing though. Oh well, 2.3 should be out for the G2 before then anyways!

Lol, maybe they could have a nexus for each major os release... Would like a moto nexus for honeycomb w/ dual core and tegra2

Wow what a let down. Just reading through the users guide(http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/www.google.com/en/us/googlephone/AndroidUsersGuide-2.3.pdf) it looks like nothing was changed at all. Same crappy music player, same useless gallery app. What did they hire that guy from Palm for? Green here and orange there?:lol

I was dead set to buy this phone because I thought it would push the envelope like the N1 did, but it clear that Samsung is holding there big guns for the Galaxy 2. Hopefully HTC will come through and build something to eclipse this.

I do not have problems with the gingerbread because it was mentioned by the time google hired palm guy, it was already too late to implement his ideas in this iteration of the os. thats why i believe we will see a completely refreshed gui in honeycomb. , but the phone hardware itself is another story and utterly disappointing. This would have been the perfect phone for google to, again, break the benchmark with phones with dual core and tegra. But somehow i think google got greedy with the potential sales this holiday.

I don't know, it makes sense the Nexus S is the way it is. Why release some uber powerful dual core phone that will blow away any current Android phone on the market? How would that work for developers to develop for the majority of current high end (millions) of 1ghz snapdragons and Cortex based phones? I think its better the Nexus S is more in line with the current top line phones, this makes apps and games that would perform well across the board. Not apps that are great on the uber Nexus S and crap on current phones. Just my thoughts here. If other manufactures want dual core power houses then they can make them, at least the current crop will not be left in the dust.
