Android, iOS, WP8 phone debate thread

iOS is not light years ahead of Windows Phone in basic fludity. Windows Phone is just as fluid. It's also ridiculous to say that Android is still a "bloated and laggy mess" with Jellybean. It's not remotely either of those. It has the occasional hiccup still but it's extremely fluid 95% of the time.

Yeah I didn't actually mean to include WP8 in that comment since it's not actually even competition. I haven't had extensive time with WP so I can't really judge it apart from their ecosystem.

I've had plenty of time with stock Jelly Bean on my GNex and it is still a laggy stuttery mess compared to iOS on the 4 or 4S.

Yup I've been using a Galaxy Nexus for the past 6 months and even had some time with the S3 before returning it. Actually my previous iPhone 1, 3GS, and 4 all ran more smoothly than this thing.

Jellybean is not laggy. You fucked up on the installation of your rom/kernel.

Edit: the only time I do get lag is if I navigate through the phone while installing multiple apps simultaneously

The only reason coldfoot is now pretending to have a fictional WP8 phone with 1 screen of live tiles is to reinforce his opinion how important it is to have a phone icon on the same place after going to home.
There is an usability advantage to keeping icons in the same place with respect to a static screen. It's visual memory, you know the top left app does X, bottom left as does Y (settings on my iPhone), etc. With scrolling, this positional memory has to work with relative positions between apps, which is a more difficult thought process.

Wait, iPhone 1?

Alright alright, jokes over. You got me! Heh.

Just how many alt. accounts does Copernicus have anyway?

I guess you hate pages on GAF with more than 3 posts then. Fuck, it took me 10 minutes to find the Post Reply button because I had to freaking scroll. I'm so lost! Who the heck designed this awful layout!?

There's usability, and then there's declaring humanity to be utterly stupid to fit your agenda.

The argument was useless from the start (no one cares about the dock except you), and they way you're arguing makes it even worse.

Oh man, fingers slipping and hitting back buttons, Jellybean with Vsynced x3buffering and a stable 60fps is laggy and less smooth than the first iPhone.

Someone pinch me, this is too good. At this point I am near certain that we have people lying their asses of about what phones they have, and lying about which phones they have used; all for the sake of making up stuff to score points for their 'team'.

You're missing a vital step when you're talking about positional memory.

If the user is the one that can set the positions, it further reinforces it's usability.

Even if it's on a scrolling list, because that list is setup by the user and not pre configured.

Used the JRO03O update like every other LTE GNex. How different is it from its toro counterpart cause this thing blows.

We all know that people posting on GAF are a perfect sample of the general population. That's why Obama is getting 95% of the vote this election and X-COM is going to outsell Call of Duty.

People go on an on about live tiles... but in my (admittedly short) time with WP7 I never saw anything beyond a number indicating a missed call or message.

What info are you really getting? My xbox live avatar would occasional peek out at me, I suppose that is the "fun" of the OS?

Oh yeah there was TWC live tile, kind of cool to see the radar/temp at a glance. I always found it was out of date though and had to open the app to get the current forecast anyway.

This thread is actually a great exercise in using and managing the ignore function. Also somewhat of a blessing as its managed to draw almost all the crazies from each cheering section, allowing me to effectively prune future mobile conversations for better readability.

You're not going to be able to get all my accounts.

Then something went wrong or you had a hardware issue. I'm telling you this because my phone doesn't lag. Watch youtube videos of bloggers demoing recent builds of jellybean. You won't see lag there.

Nice one with pandora, lol.

I don't know man, the dynamic scrollable homescreen is one of the greatest things to come out of Microsoft. Technically you can put enough tiles that you can't scroll it, but that's a waste.

Yeah with WP8, you can just resize all those apps to tiny square size, and pack that shit in across the whole screen. Screw that gutter. I think, and I may be mistaken, that you can stuff your home screen with more apps without scrolling than any other platform. All those tiny little live tiles, gets me giddy thinking of the major advantage that gives for WP8.

I use 50 posts per page, if that's any indication. Would use 25 if it was possible.

True, but still a non scrolling list is easier to remember when both are configured by the user.

My weather is updated every hour which is good enough. BBC Mobile app gives me the latest headlines and breaking news. TS Show shows me what shows will be on today.

I also believe they are enhancing what the tiles can do for WP8.

Really? Did you have a lot of stuff on it?

I have messed around with a Nexus before a few times... Wasn't as fast as my iPhone 4S but it didn't seem THAT slow.

Guy's just full of it. Seriously, I'm literally looking at my GF's iPhone 4 right now and it's been laggy as hell since iOS 5.

I don't have much experience with JB on the Galaxy Nexus but from the little time I spent with it, it felt pretty quick with occasional hitches. Definitely way better than the 4 and just below the 4S.

Weather, calendar, messages (not only as a number, but the actual message/notification), news, feeds etc. And yes, it makes the homescreen more lively.

True, they haven't been used to their full potential yet. But with WP8 and the bigger tiles, I'm sure they'll be used a lot more, with text messages and e-mails being shown as text, with the ability to use navigation in a tile, better readability for news headlines, etc

25? 25!? Don't be ridiculous.

25 changes nothing from 50, you need 1 post per page in order to reinforce your non-scrolling argument.

25, haha

There is a tradeoff between excessive scrolling and pages of posts. Unlike GAF where a thread has thousands of posts, a smartphone has 100 apps, which can also be organized into folders. And the iPhone 5 can display 24 on one screen, pretty close, no?

Personal contacts that are pinned on your homescreen show missed calls/messages, status and photo updates from whatever social networks you have hooked up

Shitty live tile implementation like Whatsapp gives you an unread message count, good implementation is like BBC's live tile where news headlines get update regularly

Live tiles are nice but the best bit about the start screen IMO is the ability pin different sections of apps. I've got tiles for both my main inbox and a secondary folder, as well as a few documents, my timetable, a subreddit, multiple Google Reader categories, and current weather + forecasts for 3 different cities.

IMHO this is the kind of customisation I much prefer, in contrast to Android's. Everybody's homescreen still ends up looking different, and the OS doesn't suffer from whatever modding shenanigans you feel like getting up to. I do like widgets on the screen, but not at the expense of OS performance.

Wish that was the case. Don't worry I'll be switching 'teams" in a few days so I'll get off your backs. (well not really)

I did find it useful to pin the ebay watch list. The problem I found though is that it would ONLY launch the watch list from there, to get to a new search I had to back out and launch the full app.

Must be a shitty app, with Spotify I can navigate to the rest of the app from my deep links.

Apps not getting the basics right really is the biggest problem on WP to be honest, there's so much untapped functionality in the APIs, it's the kind of thing you need competition to see the most of though...

Not many people I talk to know about this. I have tiles pinned for groups of friends on my homescreen, and getting updates from their facebook feed/missed calls/messages is really nice.

You dont need to, you could have a box full of phones and tablets and take pictures of yourself wearing a 3 piece suit built out of Nexus 7's and it wouldn't make that absolutely retarded claim of yours any less false than it is. There is not a single solitary sane individual living that would back you on that quote. You are either clinically insane, blind, or you fucked up a rom install. Period.

Its not up for debate. Sorry, JB is not less smooth than an OG iPhone bro. You grossly grossly grossly exaggerated in order to try and make a point. Lots of people are guilty of that in this thread, but don't make it worse by actually trying to stand by it.

As they get marketshare the app developers will eventually start to take the time to do things properly. Android went through the same things, and on some apps, continues to. But its a lot better than it used to be on Android, the same improvements will happen for WP8 as it presses forward.

Yes must be that ROM install because stock ICS was equally laggy when I bought this phone. You can throw your spurts of ad hominem but in the end it is what it is. I wasn't stating what I said out of opinion but fact from actual usage over a good period of time.

Your Android phone isn't going to burst into flames because I personally don't like mine as much as you like yours. Get over it.

Really don't think it's a sure thing that this will happen, it's a classic chicken and egg situation. But I hope you're right.

Was thinking pretty much the same thing. Can't believe what I'm reading.

I would have spoken to someone about it, but my hand slipped and I ended up throwing my phone against the wall instead of pressing the call button.

How can you be sure it wasn't the search button???

I am seriously laughing my ass off now. I thought for sure you would have the good sense to just admit you were exaggerating for effect. But you really are going to try and sell people on that eh? Sorry, but this is a tangible and measurable metric. You can have an opinion all you want, but the topic of framerate and fluidity is somethings thats actually measurable. And JB is very very easily more fluid than the UI of the very first iPhone Vox. You can squirm all you want, but thats horseshit and your 'opinion' can't make it a fact. Sorry reality doesn't work like that.

Your phone either has an issue specific to your device, or you are exaggerating. I'll leave it at that.

Where did you think this thread was headed?

I had an idea that it would get bad, but I didn't really see this coming.

Comparing your experience to the videos of jb running on a nexus in YouTube, is yours the same or slower?

I think that would clarify this statement for everyone involved. If it's slower, obviously you have an individual issue. If it's equal... well, then that's some sort of personal bias, because people do side by side comparisons of these phones with other os's, with different results than your claim.

Number of missed calls/voicemails
Number of emails
Upcoming calendar appointment and time (also displays on lock screen)
Latest social networking updates and/or number of updates
If I pin a particular contact to the start screen, I can see their latest updates
Latest news stories and associated photo (including a flag for BREAKING news stories)
Updates/alerts to a commute route that I drive daily
Weather updates (which includes current temp, forecast, weather alerts, and forecast for next two days)
Latest FFFFound art post (useful to me personally)
Direct access to a route that I want to drive or a map location
NFL score updates
Etc.

Really don't think it's a sure thing that this will happen, it's a classic chicken and egg situation. But I hope you're right.

I think it will happen because of Windows 8 on desktops and Microsoft using that to find some way to pull developers into the ecosystem. Thats a powerful card that MS can play. And if they utilize it right, they should be able to bolster the WP8 marketplace. I think this is what will allow them to hurdle the chicken and egg problem. Once it has even a 'little' momentum, the rest will handle itself.

This thread full retard? I am inclined to disagree. I am thoroughly enjoying the three pronged arguments happening at the same time. It's like message board dodgeball.

I wish I was exaggerating. You seem to be confused. I'm not saying the phone goes completely ape shit and runs at 300mhz every time I use it. I'm talking about general usage like scrolling down a webpage on the phone, transitioning in and out of apps, sending text messages, the animation in between switching home screen pages, or hell even just touching the multitasking button with only 1-3 apps open is all a stuttery jittery process which was non existent even on the original iPhone.

These factors are existent in every Android phone I have owned and tried (even worse on the S3 due to Touchwiz). Things like that may not matter to you as much as it does to me but its there. JB didn't fix these problems and I doubt any update will for a while.

I also enjoy just pictures changing, random moving profilepictures in the people hub tile, last played music image etc.

in WP8 where you can choose the tile size yourself it enables you to for example let the livetile show the newest text message directly in the tile. thats quite cool
