I don't think it's really a good idea to try and put people from different platforms to show off their junk in the same place.

It would be fun. Not many ways to custom non-android phones.
"Look guys, I've chosen to put those 4 icons for messaging apps in the same row, how cool is that?"

Andrex, goddammit, start working on an up-to-date OP for the new 'Android Software, and Software only thread'.

Not sure he can, not having an android phone keeps him from knowing most of the apps.

Andrex said:
Sorry, but due to fragmentation I can only support OP 2.0 for those using GAF Gold™.

Blah. I guess I'll downgrade from GAF Platinum™ to GAF Gold™ when my current subscription runs out then. Does Gold™ provide the option for 200ppp?

iapetus would know.

'Tis a cursed life. :( I've had to resort to sideloading most of the good free apps I can find. Hopefully Hard Kernel can get that Market hack working soon.

Well okay.

Go for it iapetus.

Android wallpaper/screens/set-up thread

Then lock this one before it turns into a megathread and we'll (andrex) start the new
Android app recommendation and help thread.

Let's get the new threads set up first, and then I'll lock this one.

Lock this thread? o_0

I'll start working on a new one I guess, not sure what I should change in the OP though.

Ok then how about we just pitch in our recommendations for the new OP so we'll have an up to date apps listing of what is hot these days?

I'll start:

Oh noes, I've made andrex sad :(

Sowwy, Keep everything the same way if people don't agree with me.

Maybe just keep this as is and spawn a new wallpaper/setup/showoff thread?

The other day I was thinking of starting an Android homescreen and setup thread. A lot of people ask for icons, docks, wallpapers, and widget setups so I think it would work. But I'm not dedicated enough to make a long/good OP.

OK, I'll start working in some of these recommendations, give me a day or so.

Anyone wanna come up with the tagline for the new thread?

Looks like Whatsapp from iPhone is getting ported to Android. You can request the private beta at android-support@whatsapp.com stating your phone number with international prefix and that you want to test the app.

For those that don't know it, it allows instant messaging via 3G/Wifi Push with other iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian (in beta) and Android (in beta as well) with the app installed.

Lifehacker just posted a "Pack for Android" list of best essential apps:

http://lifehacker.com/5616299/lifehacker-pack-for-android-our-list-of-the-best-android-apps

It could be use for a new OP.

Right away I see Evernote, which lacks local note storage, and no 3Banana and/or Springpad so this list sucks.

edit: Finished the list and it's exactly what I thought it would be, all the big common apps you'd expect and one or two lesser known apps. No more helpful than going to the market and seeing the top apps overall or in the category. Garbage list.

agreed. I've seen Evernote on several of these "best of android" lists and I cringe every time. It's becoming very annoying.

So, let's be democratic and choose a name for the wallpaper/setup thread.

I propose:

The Android Customization Thread of "Because we can"

:lol

The Android Customization Thread (now without jailbreaking).

I also propose we use post 3 of this thread as an OP for that thread and with links/descriptions to LauncherPro and ADW Launcher (and more if you have any suggestions).

(would that hit too close to home perhaps..? I'd rather we have this mod approved since some mod said they're gonna start treating phone OS bannings much like console threads :()

Just kidding. I wouldn't approved of a title like that.

XDA has some good tutorials. I even think that someone make a Wiki for ADW out of that forum.

Edit:

Here is the Wiki for ADW Launcher:

Haha no I love it! It's just that it'll be inviting the hate :D

I love this thread.

Son of a Bitch!

Just learned something new about ADW from that Wiki:

Swipe up's default action is to open/close a secondary dock bar at the bottom of the screen. This secondary dock is empty by default, so it will appear that your dock has disappeared. All you need to do is drag an icon to the dock and it will pin itself to the dock; it can hold several icons and if you place more than can fit on the screen the dock can scroll left and right. To delete an icon in the secondary dock, long press it and an option to delete will pop up.

O_@

This is the main reason I switched to LauncherPro, the scrollable dock.

Allright, right now I have a problem with flashing the cyanogen mod on my htc magic 32b

im following these instructions:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Upgrading_from_CyanogenMod_4.2_to_CyanogenMod_5/6

i rooted the phone with universal root, or whatever it is called.
I put in the files "Update-CM-5.0...." and and the "gapps" file in the root directory of my sd card. i put it in as .zip and as regular folders, since i didnt know what exactly to do with them.
i wiped the phone, since i wanted to avoid any additional problems. right now, i am stuck at point 10.

10. Select the option "Flash zip from sdcard".

I have a similar option, that is called
apply sdcard: update.zip [alt+S]
but when clicking it, i get the following yellow lines:

-- install from SDcard...
finding update package...
opening update package...
E:can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted

theres also this line:
E: cant open /cache/recovery/command

What am I missing, where did I go wrong, what do I have to do? I want to run cyanogen mod really bad (especially since i just wiped it)

so quick question. running sapphire 1.0 and every so often my phone is saying low memory. i have 25 megs. i would imagine this wouldn't cause that to say low memory. the thing that sucks is i can't receive text messages now because it's saying this. i'd rather not trying to figure out what to install. this seems like some crazy random bug in the rom.

anyone else have this issue or maybe even know how to stop it?

don't unzip the files. just place the two zip files on your sd card.

what recovery are you using? Amon_ra? You should see an option that says something like "apply any zip from SD". Don't select the "apply sdcard: update.zip". that's for something else.

Loaded up the Android SDK last night. Emulator takes a looooooooooong time to get going. Doing iPhone app development at work, hopefully it won't be difficult to port to Android because these are going to be the two big markets for mobile apps.

+1.

Read the permissions for the apps before installing apps.
Don't give out your password to people.
That's it.

no kidding, in order to get work email on my personal phone i needed to give permissions to a new adminstrator

Permissions requested
- phone system and data (wipe)
- monitor login attempts
- remote lock

i know our IT person and they don't do any kind of administration on devices using activesync for data (iphone and droids) so i reluctantly agreed. Although its pretty easy to go in and revoke admin access in the settings.

well i somehow fucked up the recovery image, but i fixed that now and i am on the best way to flash the current stable cyanogen mod. i hope it works. as i know me, something will break, but i hope not to a point of no return.
but hey, maybe im liucky today!

oh god, i hope this problem vanishes somehow.
I am stuck with a red vodafone bootscreen. i know it takes longer after a romflashing, but fuck, this is 20 minutes now.
shit.
