just got the froyo update for my droid x. are there any good websites for streaming movies on droid?

I've been wondering about that myself... I have this (now) great HDMI out on my EVO, but what the hell am I going to output? Youtube videos?... no thanks. Android really needs Netflix and a movie/tv store ala iTunes or Zune.

Netflix is coming, there's things like UStream, the Blockbuster app which is being tested for other phones now and flash video. The HDMI thing is handy for sharing videos you've recorded.

Some flash video PC World compiled:

Anyone heard of xiialive? I found this app on the PlayNow store (the alternate store managed by Sony Ericsson), but don't see it in Market (The Netherlands). Anyway, if you can find it then I suggest a try, since it's pretty awesome.

It's an internet-radio streaming app and it allows you to search for tags, tag songs you like and favorite streams. Since I listen to unusual jpop music, I was surprised I got a nice list of radio streams when I simply searched for jpop. Even one I regular visited in the past was in the list!

I got the free lite version. As far as I know you get full functionality except for some settings.

Here's some information I found by googling, not sure if they are correct. Link to source:

My X10 mini came pre-installed with NeoReader to read those codes. I like it more than google goggles since it automatically recognizes stuff without me taking a picture. Not sure how barcode scanner works, never tried it.

That app looks hot, I'm checking it out now.

Random thought - I wonder when Google Music and the online market + ota install will come. I think it's funny and awesome that once Goggle revealed that Appbrain hit the ground running with a bunch of updates from redesigning the site and app to finding a way and beating Google to OTA installs. I hope the official market is awesome and wonder if people will leave or stick with Appbrain.

Barcode Scanner is instant too, Goggles is the slowest one.

Question: What's the best AIM app? Particularly concerned with battery life. I'm not a super picky AIM user - I just want to IM here and there and not kill my battery in an hour.

I've been using it for about 8 months now, it's great. Originally called Droid Live but the dev has recently changed its name.

I use it to stream Howard Stern and Art Bell daily. :)

Beejive is in beta for Android right now, but I like it a lot more than the other aim apps I've tried. Can't comment too much on battery life since I don't run it for hours on end, but I haven't noticed it killing my battery either.

New Android user here! Just got a HTC Dream from by brother, running the latest cyanogenmod.

Browsing for free apps now, can anyone recommend some cool ones? I'm a game developer (not for android yet though), so aside from the obvious todos/dropbox/docs thingy maybe there's something I missed.

So I hear there's some sort of unofficial Netflix app on Android? Does it do streaming, or is it just queue management?

Are you referring to PhoneFlicks? That is just a queue management program. But if there is something different, I would be interested to know.

This app is great but I don't use it very frequently - it absolutely kills your battery in about an hour. (I'd imagine its more the constant connection to the shoutcast server any app would need more than anything else).

I use eBuddy for my MSN & Facebook chat (multi-login). It also supports AIM, although I don't have an AIM account so I never connected to that, but I assume it will work just as good.

It helps if you keep the screen off instead of constantly turning it on, but when I was using it, it was almost as if every percent on my battstatt was a minute of radio listening :lol

Say what?

I use it at work and I can play it for a good 3-4 hours straight with about a 30% battery hit over WiFi.

You may want to see what else is sucking on your battery.

It's definitely this... though I'm doing my streaming over 3G when I'm at work, so that's probably part of it.

Swift key comes out of beta on the 30th and it will disable prediction, but it's on the marketplace now for only 60p (may cost more in euroland or 'mericuh)

Retro camera is now free on mp as well.

Thanks for the reminder, it's a really nice on-screen keyboard. I just bought it and due to the X10 mini's tiny screen I sometimes press on the wrong key but it recognizes what I really wanted to type. It supports 2 language at the same time so I don't have to mess around with switching :)

Yeah, i have a galaxy s and I'm not a fan of the samsung or swype keyboards, so swiftkey is a god send.

And the full version is a lot better than the beta, they've put arrow keys into it!! Very, very handy for correcting mistakes. General layout is improved as well, bargain for 60p!

Anyone else having an issue with Beautiful Widgets 3.14 breaking their widget that they resized with launcher pro? It's trying to shove the weather data that I don't want into the resized area.

i'm thinking of buying a Android phone... i don't want to buy any high-end because I wont use it that much and I dont have money too

So, I'm between this two:

Samsung Galaxy 5 (or Galaxy i5500 as you call it)
240x320 capacitive screen
Android 2.1 (will have 2.2 by the end of the year here)
100MB internal memory
A-GPS
Can buy in Brazil, arrive next day
Costs: R$700 ~ U$400

LG GT540 (or Optimus as you call it)
320x480 resistive screen
Android 1.6 (will have 2.1 anytime soon)
120MB internal memory
A-GPS
Have to Import from UK
Costs: R$383 (up to R$651 with taxes) ~ U$218 (up to U$370 with taxes)

Which one should I take?

As Android 2.1- can't store apps in the SD Card, 100MB and 120MB are going to be enough?

The lowest price I got was in ebay.co.uk, 132 pounds... but buying in euros would be much better, I just don't know which EU eBay site to use. I found ebay.fr but i dont speek french :(

This American Life has released their Android app on the unsuspecting masses; $2.99. It's also one of the better looking apps I've used.

If you're doubting between those, have you looked into Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini?

Specs here: http://www.selectgsm.com/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-unlocked-phone-mobile-pr-17121.html

Runs Android 1.6 and will have 2.1 soon (kind of like the LG one).

This Sony is way more expensive here (costs R$1000), but if I import it from UK I can pay R$437 (up to R$743 with taxes).

Sounds like a good option (importing), but it has a few problems using my sim card. =/

Question related to media playback:

I've purchased a BD copy of Iron Man 2 that comes with a digital copy. I transfered the digital copy (wmv) to my HDD using the included disc. When I copy that file to my EVO and try to play it the files starts playing as a garbled mess. My instinct tells me it may have something to do with DRM but I thought the entire point of the digital copy was to allow me to copy it to a portable device. Am I missing a step?

Just grab Rockplayer. :D

Rockplayer is the one playing the garbled mess. It plays the other movies ok (mp4) but these .wmv digital copies that come with movies now don't seem to play.

So I ended up downloading an update for Beautiful Widgets yesterday, and it looks like when you try to crop out the weather with Launcher Pro, it no longer leaves just the time there. It cuts off part of the time and the weather. Anyone know a workaround for this?

Is there a compelling reason to pay for this instead of continuing to listen to TAL via Google Listen?

Launcher Pro guy announced he's completely redo-ing the app from the ground up which is good because I stopped using it due to things this decision will improve like memory usage and redraw.

Quick game recommends:

4 teh birds is a "match three or more" game with birds but it's pretty good. First, the art and graphics are great - it's very polished, vibrant and colorful. Second the game is much more chaotic than anything you've probably played in the genre - the controls are deliberately bouncy and loose.

Glu Mobile released the strategy game Transformers G1: Awakening which features 3d battle sequences. Also for anyone with younger family(or who enjoys simple games) my cousin has been obsessed with Action Potato lately.

OrangePixel is also releasing a humourous take on Snake this Friday called Mini Army: Youtube video. ngmoco is working on bringing We Rule to Android and Angry Birds is due for release any day now. Hizah!

You get full access to the entire back catalog (400+ episodes), plus on-demand of both seasons of TAL on HBO, plus extra audio interviews and such with Ira. It's a packed app if your're a fan of the show; lots of fan service.

Same for me. I had to download an older APK and ignore the update.

It's Action Potato, and holy shit my family has been addicted to it(all of us being 25+ years old). We compete with our scores all the time.

Wait... I have some digital copies of movies downloaded for iTunes for an old iPod. Can I play these using Rockplayer on my android phone? I didn't think I could play these on my phone due to the iTunes video copy protection?

Does anyone know of any software or an app that backs up HTC desire, or any android device 100%? Is there even such a thing? My Desire recently started dropping calls to the point where it is essentially useless as a phone, so I'm taking it in to the store tomorrow to get repaired/exchanged but I spent ages customising the icons, home screen, email accounts.. the thought of doing it all again is a bit depressing to be honest.

So.. is there something that might be able to save me from all that?

It is the drm, those things don't even play on MS' own zune device. You can only play those back on devices that support play for sure, which makes them virtually worthless, imo. Its in the fine print somewhere. Digital copy is a joke unless you have an ios device, and even then I'm getting these "your computer is not authorized to play this content" error since upgrading to itunes 10.

Ugh, why even bother trying to do things legally? The only people not affected by these anti pirating tools are people actually pirating these things. I almost gave up on buying mp3's until they went drm free, I'm about to give up on video until they fix that as well.
