Yay! Angry Birds came out!
(not on the market yet tho... m.getjar.com)
Is that site pirating it or something? Why is it free?

I bought Angry Birds for iOS, so it'd be nice to get it for free on my Droid X.

IT’S HERE. AND IT’S FREE. After an extended period of beta testing, Rovio is proud to present Angry Birds for the Android platform. First of all, we’d like to thank you for your patience.

Why is Angry Birds free on Android? We want to make Angry Birds available for as many people as possible. Previously, many people were experiencing problems in finding Angry Birds on Android Market, but now everybody can download the game on their device.

Angry Birds will run on second generation Android devices and upwards, with Android platform 1.6 or later. Your device needs to support OpenGL ES 2.0. QVGA display resolution is not supported currently, but we will add support for QVGA devices soon.

Angry Birds Android features mobile advertising. A future update will include the option to purchase and opt out of advertisements.

Awesome!

Ok, so question.

I'm new to Android, so this may sound kind of basic. But I have an address... What is the best way to get directions? Should I set up the directions on my computer, and then Chrome to Phone that?

Or should I just wait til I'm in my car, type in the address, and then hit Navigate to this address or whatever?

usually the address is saved in my gmail and android does a good job in knowing that the text is an address because I can just click it on my phone and navigate to it, but any way that's fastest for you is fine.

In my experience, speaking the address doesn't work well. I guess I have a problem enunciating.

My HTC Desire is running extremely low on memory. Since I have 2.1 I can't save apps to my SD card and something is taking up all the space. Is anyone having this problem, or better yet, have any idea when 2.2 is releasing for the HTC Desire (or if it has already?)

Just go to Google Navigation and type in the address and then hit navigate. It'll do the rest. Or you can go to Maps and then navigate if you'd rather, but that's a wasted step.

It has, quite a while ago. Check from updates in the settings menu.

Just bring up the address on your phone in the google maps app. Then when you get to your car, hit "Navigate to this address".

I just got an HTC Droid Incredible and I really like it so far. The only problem I'm having is that the Facebook app refuses to display notifications and new messages in my inbox. I'm upgraded to 2.2 and the Facebook app is also at the current version. Is there any way to fix this or does this version of the Facebook app cause problems for everyone?

Anyone interested in augmented reality and want to be a jr. Ghostbuster, get spec trecker on the market. Loads of fun!

Just downloaded this. Definitely gonna try it out.

Holy shit, imagine the possibilities for some sort of augmented reality MMO that uses the real world with GPS as the game's "persistent world." I wonder what kind of server you'd need for all that location data and such though.

Hi, I downloaded launcher pro today and before I decide to use it as my default i'd like to ask a few questions, i'm on an htc evo btw.

First, is there a way I can get the htc clock and weather to look exactly as it would default on launcher pro? Second, are there any good calendar and photo frame apps to download? The ones with launcher pro suck ass..

Thanks!

htc clock, you can get an app called beautiful widgets. (cost $2.08)
IMO the best calendar app is pure calendar widget ($2.08)

I have beautiful widgets but don't see an option for the htc clock, the one I downloaded online is transparent and weird looking -_-

Edit: Oh and when running launcher pro, is there a way to make it the default and to make sure only it is running? Seems like it would eat the processor up to have both running..

I just thought of something.

Suppose you have a phone/tablet that doesn't have android market on it.

Could you just install AppBrain (which you can download without Market, I think) and use the fast web installer to install applications?

EDIT: Actually, I guess it doesn't.

So my Droid 2 came with an app called City ID. I figured it was something stupid I would never use and I could just ignore it, but this morning it popped up saying "city id is a service blahblahblah you can pay us a $1.99 subscription or keep using the demo version." I said "fuck this shit" and tried to uninstall it via the appbrian app and it wouldn't let me. I don't want this useless crap popping up. Any way I can get rid of it without rooting?

Wonder if anyone can help. I'm an iPhone guy, so Android is completely new to me.

My mum wanted a smartphone, but she didn't want a contact so that ruled out the iPhone. I ended up buying her the Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade) for her birthday. Seems like a nice little phone and I seen it had good review for the price.

So basically I want to set the phone up to make it as simple as possible for her to use.

I also want to get rid of all the ugly orange branded apps on the phone.

From what I understand, I need to root it. I've seen a thread showing how to do that. What I don't understand is that if I root the phone, do I also need to install a custom ROM, or are they different things?

You gotta boot your phone every now and then. After the boot it runs well and 2.2 has been out for some time now ;) Still even with the 2.2 it's good to boot it from time to time.

The closest widget that looked like HTC flip cock was Fancy Widget: http://androidcommunity.com/fancy-widget-for-android-20100612/

It doesn't "exist" anymore :/

So I'm using Launcher Pro and my Google search widget will NOT work.

I have it placed on my homescreen under the weather widget and above the icons (look at the attached photo).

Photo%20on%202010-10-17%20at%2012.49%20%232.jpg

Whenever I voice search, everything is fine. The problem comes when I click in the text search box. When I do that, the widget moves itself up and under the notifications bar and over the weather widget.

Any idea why it is doing this?

IIRC, it does that all the time. It's not a bug.

Of course it's a bug. How is it not?

Yeah, same thing happens to me. Turning the phone into landscape fixes it, or resetting the whole thing. I'm using LauncherPro as well, but I'm not sure if it's a LP only problem.

Gotta be LP's resize feature. Overlapping
Try moving the search widget to another homescreen that is not crowded

Ok, I just assumed it had to do with Launcher Pro. That sucks it's just a general bug.

I understand the widget moving up as it essentially moves into the place where the search box is in the actual search app, but it should obviously move back to where you want it when you jump back to the homescreen.... It's like it's getting stuck on the notification bar.

Thanks!

Download Beautiful Widgets, open the menu and choose Clock Skins, find one that looks similar to the HTC clock. I don't think there are any that look identical, but some are pretty close.

I need some help. I am looking for an Android app that translates between Chinese and English, but does not require the internet. My brother in-law is heading back to China and does not want to use the internet while he is on his phone.

i just installed the cyanogen mod 6 for my htc magic (mostly because i needed to get rid of the launcher pro version i could not updated, and this one has some other dock).

but after several tries flashing the google apps on it, i just could not do it. is there a way to flash it after i already run the new rom?
( maybe i only flashed the wrong file, but that was the newest one i found on the cyanogen boards)

Ok I found some nice clocks using beautiful widget, now the big question, is there a way to make it so turning on my phone loads right into launcher pro? And also to set the home button to stay in launcher pro? Essentially disabling htc sense as well I guess.

And with that, good widgets to replace the ones launcher pro loses would be nice, evo has awesome ones that look nicer than the launcher pro ones but I like the added icons you get in LP :(

What do you mean by "could not do it"? What did you try and what happened? What is the name of the file that you were using? The filename tells us which version you are trying.

You can get the latest version at http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?type=gapps I think for your phone, you need the mdpi or mdpi-tiny version - not 100% which of the two.

i tried the mdpi version, since that was recommended to me. but now that i think about it, as i use 32b, the tiny version makes more sense.

until now, when i tried to install it, the phone would not boot past the cyanogenmod 6 screen. i will try the tiny-version tomorrow and see what happens.

I'm thinking about getting a Motorola i1, because it has mil-spec durability and it has Nextel walkie talkie. How do the games play like? Specifically racing games, I may download Asphalt 5...

I've been wanting to put a Froyo rom on my Eris for a long time but they've been far too unstable for me, too many bugs, etc. Finally, last night I put CELB Froyo (vanilla Cyanogen-based) on my phone and I'm loving it. I was using xtrROM before which was alright but had some little frustrations, mostly due to Sense and no (reliable) apps2sd. It's ridiculous how little space there is for apps on this phone. I barely had anything installed and would still get messages about low space.

I've come to a point now where I really can't stand Sense at all. The big thing for me with Sense was having Exchange calendar integrated. I'm still working to see if I can get that working on this ROM, but if not, oh well. At least it's smooth, fast and I can install as many apps as I want now. :D

Nope. I just tried it on an empty homescreen and it does the same thing.

i had this problem but it went away when they released the new Google search on the market a few months ago. Havent had it since. Is everything up to date?

first gingerbread notes from a "source"... choose to believe if you want.

- Redesigned Youtube with leanback features
- slate gray notification bar
- more "android green"
- apps built to appear integrated into OS
- video chat through gtalk
- wifi and 3g calling direct through google voice, will be built into voice, mobile features only available using gingerbread)
- a lot of small enhancements (radio buttons and check boxes, etc), cleaner
- rumored hardware acceleration for UI to make it smoother

end of 2010 but possible early 2011

At least these are believable this time. Not sure about the first, last and "apps built..." one.

The first because a phone is closer to a computer than it is to a TV, so I'm not sure if leanback features are really what you'd want in the phone. The latter because it feels somewhat unnecessary given the speeds of the phones that will be coming out around that time.

And the "apps built.." one because I have no idea what that means :lol

i dont either, i'm no UI guy, them saying they want the apps appear to be built into the os and not just separate apps that run (i'm assuming this is for the stock google apps only)... i can't visualize it at all though. Maybe just have all of their apps (voice, gmail, etc) all have the exact same "look", instead of each app looking different

as far as hardware acceleration, using an android phone and then using an iphone you notice a much more general smoothness in the iphone... anything to recreate that feel would be beneficial.

Finally rooted my samsung captivate again. So much easier now with an app :lol :lol

Now to see if my laptop will let me side load. Anyone tried.have the blip.tv app?

If you look at the Youtube app, Music Player, Voice app, Gallery, Talk, My Tracks, etc they all have different looks and colors. They're pretty much all standalone in their look. My Tracks may be understandable since it isn't baked in, but the apps appear as if they were made by different teams and slapped together because they were.

Hopefully this means they all get unified the way Facebook, Twitter, Catch, textPlus and other apps have adopted the new UI look. Its one of Androids critics biggest complaints, "Android looks hacked together." The Android apps all look different which doesn't give devs a strong example of what design language to follow either.

Its looking like Gingerbread is a smaller upgrade than I hoped. The videochat baked in is nice...for devices that have cameras but the homescreen has nothing new going on from that leak. Pleasantly surprise me, damnit!

i would assume the music streaming, etc that was shown off during the Froyo conference will be launched as well. Also from reports Google basically has a music service lined up and ready to go, i'd assume that would be released with gingerbread... and rumors abound that they are working on video services also, using youtube.

I agree though that the UI info is a little underwhelming, but maybe the re-designs of all the built in apps will help create an "identity".

I have 2.2 Froyo on a Droid X, using Launcher Pro, and Google Search is v. 1.1.2, according to the Market, this is the newest version available.

Still won't work on mine, but I just decided whatever and took it off my homescreen. I guess since there's a physical "Search" button on the phone, it's not a big deal, I'll just use that.

I'm assuming that the guy who developed the UI for webOS has not had time to do anything for Android?
Because changing the color of the notification bar and making the icons look more uniform is far from a "complete UI overhaul".

I love the big G, but they sure need to take a page out of Apple, Microsoft, Palm on good UI design.
