Is there a good media player for Android that compares to the ipod or zune? The stock music player on my Nexus One is plain and awful. :(

Prettiest I've seen is the one stocked with the Xperia 10 :D (MediaScape).
Some people like the Nemo player from Acer? But you need to find that and download it outside the market place.

I hope Google gets another company, like Cooliris (Gallery is so fucking pretty), to touch up or revamp the Music Player on Android.

^3 from RockOn is promising. No way to search for it other than RockOn as it's title seems to be superscript 3. It's beta and didn't even have an icon last I looked.

AIM.png

AOL Mobile has just released their very own AIM instant messaging client into the Android Market. If you been trying other IM clients in the market and have not been satisfied, this may be just the app you've been in search for as it is packed with a ton of great features.

* Send and receive messages with your buddies instantly
* Real time updates of your buddies' status and availability
* Fling support for switching between conversations
* Update your status, post to your Lifestream and also cross post to any synced Facebook or Twitter accounts
* Facebook chat support so you can chat with your Facebook friends
* Portrait and Landscape support
* Supports 1.5, 1.6. 2.0, 2.1 Android OS

The app seems pretty well polished and possibly is the best AIM client available in the market. It is free, so you have nothing to lose. Give it a try and let us know how it's working for you! Scan the QR code above, or click on it in your Android browser, to download.

Some people might like that. I'm still waiting for Beejives.

That's actually a great combination. All I need is AIM/Facebook/GoogleTalk. I presume GoogleTalk is integrated already into Android, yes?

What about Jabber?

GoogleTalk is so integrated is seamless. Go to your contacts and if someone is connected they will have a green glowing dot next to them. You want to SMS someone, bring up the Messenger app...but if the contact is connected to Gtalk, you will see that same green dot next to them and their status update under the contact's name.

So you always have the option of contacting people through Gtalk, if they are connected, no need to actually pull up the Gtalk app first.

I have no idea about Jabber. Some have said that they can connect to a Jabber server and slip their AIM contacts through the native Gtalk app on Android. I have no idea how to do this though. Just wish Gtalk would be an all in one IM client.

I'll second the Mixzing recommendation. Works great, has a widget, and a search.

I just found out about "spare parts" and just the illusion of things being faster has upped my g1 enjoyment for whatever reason.

Anyone having problems uploading pics from Maps for Buzz? I try to choose a pic from my gallery and crop it, but nothing happens when I push save, just stays there. No "busy" indicator or anything.

I tried uninstalling and rebooting, no luck. Help?

Rumors of Fennec (firefox) looking like this on Android.

That's a pre-alpha of Fennec, actually. The beta and final versions will look much different.

I just found the answer to this problem if anyone else happens to come across it. For some reason, if you try to crop a high res pic at max, it will hang. Just crop it slightly less than max, should work.

It's still a bit flaky all around though. On two different attempts to add a picture, I got two different errors, and I wasn't even trying to crop.

I like MixZing myself.
This is my favorite as well but dangit if it doesnt' screw up one of my Album Arts every single time, it keeps bugging me, I simply cannot figure out why it does this. I have all my album art embedded using MediaMonkey but one of the albums always doesn't show up (and it's not always the same album). If I tell it to download album art it has one when you are in the actual album itself playing songs but never puts together a thumbnail in the album view. I'm convinced this is a bug.

Note: I'm using a Droid.

PDFs don't always show up properly in the Gmail preview function. Text will randomly be missing and it's not an issue with zooming, the text just isn't there (but is definitely in the document when viewed elsewhere). Anyone encounter this and have a fix? Or is there an easy way to just download the damn file?

I just ordered a Nexus One, what are some must have apps??
It would take forever to list them all but for me these are the ones I use the most.

Home++ - Love the Power Strip
Apps Organizer - a little secret about using this, you can download icon packs from the store and apply them to your groups, a way of getting around having to use Better Cut to get custom icons
MixZing - Great music player. Has Genre sorting and a playlist recommendation feature.
Touchdown - (if you need the full Outlook syncing)
xScope and Dolphin Browser - I sort of look at these like Chome and Firefox respectively. They both have their positives and negatives. Stock browser did get better after the update however, it now supports pinch zoom.
Settings Profiles - A cheaper alternative to Locale. Is a bit complicated however.

There's a bunch more and a TON of widgets to mess around with, TechBuzz, Sportstap, Beautiful Widgets, Agenda Widget, etc.

For games I like Robo Defense, Bebbled, and a few others.

I've only had my Nexus One for two weeks so I've spent most of that time trying out a ton of programs. I'm sure in a few months I'll end up only using a handful of the apps I have on here.

Nintaii is awesome. Its one of the featured apps on the market, and you can download the free demo by searching for "Nintaii - Lite" by Concrete Software... the menus and stuff could use more spit and polish but the actual gameplay is the kind of thing that's ideal on a handset.. quite relaxing to play.

You basically roll this 1x2 block around, trying to get it around paths on the courses, triggering switches etc in order to get yourself to the point you can drop it in the goal. Simple and fun.

I just picked up a Motorola Droid and wanted to say thanks for this thread!

Is there any talk of the Droid getting pinch to zoom functionality, by the way?

2.1 update which should come soon. or you can root.

Android newb here. I recently saw someone control iTunes with their iPhone. Is their a similar app for Android + Windows Media Player/Center?

I'd love to be able to play music through my HTPC without having to turn on the TV.

I guess you could control the entire PC via VNC if that gives you what you need. I personally have never done anything with VNC on my phone yet, haven't really had the need to.

Gmote.

All right fellow android users, I'm looking for a Home replacement app! I've been using Panda Home 1.86 and I've had enough. Its starting to get buggy as hell and is no longer as stable as 1.85. All I really need is at least 5 or more home screens.(I wish the droid 2.1 update was just a carbon copy of the Nexus 1 os). What is everybody using?

Also should I be afraid to root my droid?

Here's another Home replacement coming out. Look's pretty nice but of course will be determined by speed/battery consumption/etc.

http://www.tat.se/home/

And here's a great video of it -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOGmnnGpoqg

I read this firm was responsible for the original Android OS design.

Edit:

That thing seems to be running on a Droid or a Nexus, can't really tell, but it sure is snappy. Speed wise, I don't see much lag. And the video is not simulated, it's an actual person demoing it.

I've heard it might of been demoed on something with a different processor like a Hero, so if that is the case, it will do just fine on the Droids and above. I have signed up for the beta, hope to get to try it out!

Anyone using BeyondPod for RSS/Podcasts? I just started the free 7 day trial. Saw a couple of comments on the Marketplace that raise some concern about crashing but so far it's been stable for me. I was primarily looking for a RSS reader to cache feeds locally but I've also been finding Google Listen absolutely tedious to use and this turns out to have a very nice interface for downloading, streaming and queueing podcasts. The app has rich, deep customization options, Syncs with Google Reader, allows scheduled updates, even has a widget for playing podcasts.

App remains usable after 7 day trial, but some "Pro" features are disabled unless you pay $7 to unlock. Not clear what the Pro features are.

Is there any app out there for Microsoft Communicator? I have Exchange synced on my Eris, but this would really be the icing on the cake. I tried googling for this and didn't find anything. Maybe one of you knows of a secret Communicator app? :D

Thanks for this tip, I've only used the interface so far so I don't know how it is as playback, but the UI actually made me smile. If they can incorporate a quicker way of moving between letters, I think I'd be happy.

BTW, though it's Beta, it seemed to work better than the non-beta RockOn...
