Pulse is pretty cool, but how do you sync to Google Reader? It doesn't come up as a choice for me...

There should be a reader tab in your source management options.

And as mentioned, I'm not sure it syncs, but it does pull feeds from the RSS.

Anyone used the ZTE Blade?

I'm tempted to pick up one as a way to introduce myself to Android phones (it's only £90) and was hoping for some user feedback.

:)

Check out the hardware thread, lot of (positive) impressions. Mine's wrapped up for Christmas.

Best smartphone deal on the market.

Give Giff Gaff (for trully unlimited data) and Tesco Mobile (shitload of minutes + 500MB data) a look, Orange's tariff's are terrible.

I want some official gingerbread news. I'm tired of the teasing

seems pretty clear they are going to announce the nexus s alongside the announcement of gingerbread, so basically its a hardware waiting game

This is how you know that the Nexus One will not be their first stop for updates. I assume we NO owners could have this updated if they wanted to.

if its true that the delay was both hardware and software (multicore support), then most definitely could be running the single core version on the N1 currently. Google normally doesnt drop the bomb (putting the gingerbread man out there), and then go silent... they were definitely caught off guard. I wonder if the community backlash for such an "average" flagship phone had something to do with the retool

that being said my contract is up soon and tmobile is much cheaper then ATT. If this phone is dual core and support HSPA+ i may be jumping ship to tmobile.

Eric Schmidt holding a Nexus S.

GINGERBREAD BABY.

Apparently 2.3 has NFC (near field communication) according to Engadget.

from Phandroid.com:

"A bit more from their talk with Schmidt. When asked about the Google Phone Store and a new Nexus, before they could even finish asking him, Schmidt clearly states: “I said there’d never be a Nexus ‘2′,” with extra umph on that ‘2′. So Schmidt’s biting his tongue about something, and we think we know what it is. He also stated that Gingerbread – and most likely the Nexus S that’ll be the first phone to don it – will be out within the next few weeks."

NFC needs a chip onboard

yeah so i think its safe to say that this phone has that chip, has there been any real talk of it catching on in the US?

Also there is the whole restructuring of the way the phone handles motions with some extra sensors that this phone will also be the first to have

NFC is essentially RFID with a different name (that's a gross oversimplification, but just go with it).

It requires the device to have an onboard chip. Eric sounded like Google is going to push for future Android devices to have this chip, in order to push the NFC functionality onto users.

He mentioned that your phone would also double for your credit card (and any other number of cards you might have in your wallet).

How secure is this?

Balsillie, co-CEO of RIM, just said at the Web 2.0 summit "we'd be fools not to have it in the near-term, and we are not fools" referring to NFC.

The only way I could see this taking off is if all the mobile OS camps decided on a standard to use, which sounds like it's happening?

all operators agreed on a standard, i'm sure it will be in the next iphone, right now they have a piggyback to get it to work. It looks like they are trying to get it standard on android and RIM is jumping on board as well.

Not sure about the CC companies though. I think... Visa... is doing the trial in NYC

I don't like the idea of using my phone bill/account as payment method. Never have.
I much rather tie it to my debit card or the one or two credit cards I currently use.

I don't want to give the US Carriers more power. Fuck'em!

Yep, if this is the carriers plans with NFC (putting the charges on our monthly bill), I won't use it. It really isn't inconvenient to carry around a wallet with a credit card inside, so they will have to make this very easy to switch to and use.

because credit card companies are bastions of benevolence?

The lesser of two evils, when it comes to mobile.

US mobile carriers want to locked down the wireless internet. Mobile is the future and they want to control it. I wish our mobile industry was more like Europe's.

I have my own issues with the credit card industry and banks. But I will fight that battle on another playing field.

I don't really see how the carriers could be convinced to stay out of it, so I foresee it happening under the auspices of the carriers or not happening at all, so I'll take the carriers. I guess i'm a pessimist.

so Phandroid just posted a news story about a hack to remove ads from Angry Birds....

Why would an Android fan site actively try to hurt Android developers? Lame. I'll get my Android news elsewhere.

I haven't read the post, but news is news. If they urge people to do it, that's a little lame, but merely reporting that it's available isn't too egregious, if you ask me.

What would be the best Android phone AT&T offers? Or is there a new awesome one coming up next month. Wife wants one and says to hell with Iphone due to no Flash support, so going to get her an android for her Birthday next month. We are in contract with AT&T right now.

Right now the Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S line) is the best AT&T Android offering.

AT&T is most likely losing iPhone exclusivity though in the coming months, so they will probably try to beef up their Android lineup at that point.

Cool was looking at that little while ago, liked the big ass screen on it.

Captivate is a good phone. Not sure if any other android phones are coming out soon for ATT but that has been the best one. But it has some issues like with GPS and some phones randomly shut off. Im guessing those are more issues with the first batch of phones but my GPS is still shitty and I starting to doubt it will ever be fixed like they said they would do.

So I don't see this posted here, but it was on a few tech blogs earlier today as well

This morning I received this email

Hello,

We're writing to inform you about a planned service outage impacting Android Market that requires your attention.

We plan to perform maintenance on the Android Market Developer Console on Thursday 18 November 2010 from 10AM to 4PM Pacific Standard Time. During this time, there will be view-only access to the Developer Console at http://market.android.com/publish. You will be able to view your list of applications and error reports; however, you will not be able to upload new apps or make updates to existing apps. The publish status of your applications and use of the Android Market app on phones should not be impacted.

Thanks, and we appreciate your patience while we work to improve Android Market.

Regards,
The Android Market Team

and then a correction about an hour or two ago

Hello,

We're writing with an update about a planned service outage impacting Android Market that requires your attention.

We had previously sent you an email that notified you about an upcoming maintenance outage. Unfortunately, that email contained a significant mistake about the timing of the maintenance:

We plan to perform maintenance on the Android Market Developer Console starting at 10PM on THURSDAY 18 November and ending by 4AM FRIDAY 19 November 2010, Pacific Standard Time.

During this time, there will be view-only access to the Developer Console at http://market.android.com/publish. You will be able to view your list of applications and error reports; however, you will not be able to upload new apps or make updates to existing apps. The publish status of your applications and use of the Android Market app on phones should not be impacted.

We sincerely apologize for the confusion, and appreciate your patience while we work to improve Android Market.

Regards,
The Android Market Team

and now i just saw on http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...mo-videos-high-res-app-icon-feature-graphics/ that features have already been added for developers, including:
- hi-res icon, (most likely also for tablets)
- larger promo graphics,
- link to youtube for a "trailer" of sort for your app

(these are already available to fill in for me, so i assume that is also the case for all other developers)

this all mostly hints towards market for the pc browser coming very soon, since clearly they didn't need to bring the publishing site down to update the developer interface, it's already done

I'm almost more excited about that than gingerbread

agreed, the market is the biggest thing lacking and is the reason all these alternative's pop up. The main reason i still only use the main market is because of the auto restore once you get a new phone or wipe your existing one... hopefully they make it better

Hey guys, I have a Droid 2 that has all the latest updates. I'm thinking about rooting my phone, but I have a few questions.

1. What advantages would that bring? Is it really worth it? (I'm not sure if I want to install a custom rom or not)

2. How likely is it that brick my phone? Are the changes irreversible?

3. What kind of stuff could I do with root access?
