Yeah, I was watching that thread seeing what Apple was bringing, and people were fucking flipping out over every single thing they announced. Did they announce anything that wasn't playing catchup though? I do think iPhone 4 looks really sweet though. Nice looking hardware and better screen. Acting like they just landed on the moon, with page after page of posters saying they are splooging all over the place was a little over the top though :lol
Its funny. People go crazy for camera flash or a front camera that can only be used to another iphone (no cross platforms or computer) and only on wifi...as long as its by Apple.

Folders! Camera flash! Better camera! HD goodness! Higher res screen (with no improvement to size)!

This is not new and gets old. Android superphones will continue to go above and beyond, and iPhones will continue to be simple, predictable and frankly, boring.

I was a little excited and nervous, because I thought they could unviel a gamechanger and make me have a decision to make. Thank goodness that clearly didn't happen.

Yeah I'm hoping 2.2 will alllow for more sophisticated and larger apps with the SD card storage ability. It's already shown a great ability to expand the catalog at a super rapid rate, now the quality needs to ratchet up.

i'd say about 90% of my larger apps have been updated to allow move to sd card, so the early release of 2.2 was good, now i'd just like the ability to... you know... actually do it

Can someone help me out with Google Voice?

I have been trying to sign up, but when ever I go to enter a pin it says my phone number cannot be verified...

Okies I as some users said not to use a task killer, that's fine by me I'll try without it.

I'm having this strange issue on the Samsung Galaxy S, 2.1 phone, every once in a while it will try to connect to wifi, even when mobile data is available, is there a way to totally disable wifi from being used unless I click on the icon?

That happens to me because I'm "outside" the united states.

Really? Well I live in Maine so it shouldnt be a problem...

Do I have to set it up on a computer or something before my phone?

I wish T-Mobile would update the damn OS. I think I'm still on 1.6

Hack your phone. Do it :D I finally gave it when Cyanogen managed to get the Eclaire to work :D You can finally taste that delicious update. D: Pretty sure G1 is dead on the official front for updates. So join the dark side.

You would have to disable wifi in settings then reenable when you want to use it. if wifi is on it will automatically connect you to a known network. If you want easy access to the settings I would download quicksettings, its awesome

Are there any good apps to learn Japanese on android?
Try aedict.

It doesn't exactly TEACH you japanese, but it has a large database of phrases which you would commonly use in conversation. Download all the required dictionary packages, search for a word (either in romaji or in english), and you'll be able to see what I mean.

On another note, my GSM HTC Hero from Hong Kong still hasn't received 2.1. I don't want to risk bricking my phone either. =(

Didn't see it posted here...

Audible beta is officially out for Android. Isn't up on the Marketplace yet but you can simply sign up for the beta group and snag it manually from the site.

For US users only. Fuck you, Audible.

Wait, you have the Galaxy S already? Where do you live?
I'm dying to get my hands on one of those. How is it so far?

Anybody know of an app to control bluetooth on/off via the notification pull out versus a widget? Currently have a widget but I'd prefer something I could use like I have my wi-fi setup.

quicksettings

no problem, its awesome and should be standard on the phone!

Quick settings is a godsend! All setting, readily available on the notification bar.
I hope Mr. Duartes implements something similar in the up coming updates to the OS. Things like turning on/off wifi and bluetooth shouldn't be hidden...and widget buttons just take up space.

What's the best picture app to add vibrant comic book like colors/bloom to my pictures? Think Zelda: Twilight Princess or 300.

Photoshop.com is the only one I have...can say is the best or worst. I have not tried any other.

:lol I forgot I had Photoshop on here, I've had it forever and have barely used it. Turns out it has a Vibrant option that's pretty decent. Thanks for the reminder.

Anyone know anything better I'm all ears, but this isn't bad.

I flashed Froyo to my Droid and was going in to reinstall Backbreaker but can't seem to find it. Can anyone else find it or was it removed for some reason? Kind of bullshit if it was removed considering I paid for it.

Well, the Froyo leaked was not a final release. This means many, if not all, apps in the market place do not recognize the 2.2 OS. Specially paid apps. You will have to wait until the market updates to recognize the 2.2 (plus its features...apps to SDcards comes to mind).

Is the price you pay for installing a "beta" leaked release.

Probably not updated for 2.2 yet.

So with the news of the Palm guy joining the Android team, we can expect to see a solid and constant UI experience through out the whole Android OS. Perhaps we can see this by next year, what I hope though is once we have a great look to the Android OS, companies like HTC, Motorola, etc. would stop putting their own skin over Android. It really slows the upgrading process, and skins like MOTO Blur make Android look like shit.

Do you not use any backup software? I personally use Titanium.

I don't think a better UI for stock Android will stop things like Sense and MotoBlur. These UIs are the only way they can differentiate themselves from competitors.

Never going to happen. Not only are companies in too deep by this point, but they think it adds value and differentiates their product.

The only way it'll start declining is if people vote with their wallets. If all the stock Android phones start outselling the skinned ones by leaps and bounds companies will obviously take a look at that. Nexus One versus Droid Incredible/EVO probably aren't going to make them take a look anytime soon, though.

But skins are really only a tangent to the main problem, and that's manufacturers and carriers in general not being experienced enough for big upgrades like Android requires. Thankfully, this will definitely diminish as time goes on and they get their stuff together, so there's no real need to single out skins as the problem.

Luckily with Android, you can flash almost all of the big name phones with different firmwares. I know it's not realistic but Google should include some kind of "root" button to encourage that, like the Android Developer Phones.

they've already started on the refined and more consistent UI experience as discussed at I/O. the new twitter app is the first example of that.

I agree with you Andrex, after I'm done with my Droid Incredible; I'm going with either stock Android phones or Nexus. By then I hope Android has a unified look, the only thing I really want right now, they've done a great job to build Android into an outstanding OS in terms of performance with Froyo. It's the primary reason I'm have the Incredible.

Im doing the same thing. I plan on keeping my Incredible until my next upgrade in 2 years. By then, something bigger, better and hopefully stock will be out and I can go with that,

You probably read this, but it's a great article on the matter. I suggest everyone interested in Android to read it. I posted the last few paragraphs but the whole article is great.

Android fragmentation: something to fear?

The only real way to combat version fragmentation is to slow down the pace of development, a tactic that would probably be detrimental to Android's competitiveness and long-term viability. Google's aggressive pace of development has allowed Android to evolve from the mediocre me-too effort that it was at launch into the extremely compelling, top-notch platform that it is today. It's on a trajectory to leapfrog Apple's iPhone operating system, but it's only going to be able to do that if Google keeps pushing forward at breakneck speed.

Google is faced with a tricky balancing act, because it will be difficult to keep up this pace without alienating existing users who are stuck on older versions of the platform. It's also increasingly clear that some of the hardware vendors, with their inability to roll out timely updates, are a major factor that contributes to the problem.

This is partly due to lack of incentive (they would prefer to sell you a new device rather than add new capabilities to an existing device), but it's also partly Google's fault because the search giant routinely waits until after a new version is launched before it makes all of the new source code public. Increasing the transparency of development and moving from the code-dump "cathedral" model to a more inclusive "bazaar" model would make it easier for handset makers and mobile carriers to prepare for updates concurrent with Google's development process.

Fragmentation isn't going away any time soon, but I don't think that the resulting compatibility challenges are seriously damaging to Android. Google has found practical ways to minimize the impact of fragmentation and to keep the broader Android ecosystem marching to the same beat. The advantages of forward momentum arguably outweigh the cost of version fragmentation, but there are still steps that Google can and should take to encourage device makers to roll out updates.

The only way Google can catch up to Apple, RIM, and even Windows Mobile (in market-share and mind-share) is by improving the OS without causing too much trouble to the ecosystem that is the Android Market.

I think updating the OS twice a year is a good.

Hello everybody! Just got my new EVO and it's my first smart phone EVER! Looking for some good apps and shit. Finally, I am out of the stone age!:D

Check out Robo Defense on the Android store if you like tower defense games. I tried the light version and the full version is only $2.99. One cool thing about the store is you can buy and get a refund within 24 hours if you don't like the software.

This really needs to be a standard across app stores, I think WebOS does this too? They make it fair, you can only do it once per app so it can't really get abused. It has come in handy for me a few times and am grateful that it's allowed.

And yeah, buy RoboDefense. It was the first app I bought, still working on finishing all the achievements; then I will probably delete the backup file and start over :lol

Regarding fragmentation, couldn't the Open Headset Alliance vote to change requirements for using the Android name and Marketplace on phones and devices? For instance, they could pass legislation that manufacturers/carriers of Android phones must release updates to all hardware capable devices no later than 2 months from the date of official release by Google? If they fail to meet that deadline, then they no longer maintain such status for their phones.

So all users know they have to wait no longer than two months for the latest OS and manufactures/carriers have 2 months plus the time that Google releases updates to companies before official release to implement and test updates to their phones. Seems like it would be a fair solution to the whole fragmentation issue, then again, I'm not clear on how the whole Android ecosystem technically works anyway.

Phones that are too old to handle the new core OS, of course, are left out in the dust. But that is nothing new across the industry anyway.

HAHA, that was the first thing I downloaded. So good. I will probably upgrade soon. What's in the upgrade?

I will be honest, the game is so addictive that I only played the original level that is in the demo when I got it last night. :lol And that was for about 1 1/2 hours while I was sitting in bed thinking about how badly I needed to go to bed so I could get up today. But I believe that it adds about 5 or 6 additional maps. I am assuming it adds additional towers and enemies in the additional maps.

Tower Defense Free is another one I looked at that seemed really good and seemed to have a good campaign but it's $4.99 so I went with the cheaper one for now and it seems to play really well. I like that the fast forward is on the screen at all times and not hidden in a menu like in Tower Defense Free.

Robo Defense is generally touted as the better/best tower defense game on the market today

Right, I read that as well. It is indeed very good. Some of these levels are pretty rough starting out, I'm guessing that purchasing upgrades will make them a little easier though.
