Got it, I assume the beta does not allow more than the 3 base columns for now? I synced it with my PC tweetdeck but it didn't bring my columns.
Don't know. I've never used TweetDeck before actually. It gives me a home column for everything, then a me for specific stuff to me, then direct messages, which I deleted.

I have Twitter, FB, and Foursquare linked.

Edit: If they get a widget up and running.... god help me.

Yeah, my PC client I have a "Game Journalism" and "Game Companies" column set up, I assume support is coming for that soon.

I want a widget as well, I dislike the normal Twitter one.

Also, can you not turn off notifications? I get a tweetdeck update every like 3 minutes. :lol

Tweetdeck on android is pretty awesome. i like the way it handles all the clients. going to add every service it ask for just because it's awesome :lol

Haha I just downloaded the desktop client. Wow! is all I have to say really.

And same with the notifications. My N1 light has been blinking like crazy lol.

Hopefully they add notification settings soon lol, this is a bit nuts.

Just added Foursquare on it too, not sure how you check in to a location, mine came up as "off the grid."

I find it a little crazy that the new voice search has a "listen to" command for a bunch of 3rd party music applications, but seemingly nothing for finding and playing songs I have stored on the phone itself... is there a command I am missing?

yup, thats how i figured out how to check in...

I never used foursquare, but since i can do it all in one i signed up. I have no friends that use it :(

When you update through TweetDeck using the message bubble icon, you can also add a location when you're at the input screen. Just get rid of the on-screen keyboard or press the down arrow icon to reveal other icons, etc.

Edit: I'm so freaking glad classes ended last week. My productivity would be completely shot to hell.

Tried this with Foursquare and it shows my status as "Parents%20House" and "Off the Grid." Doesn't add a correct check in for foursquare.

i just noticed using tweetdeck that writing in landscape wont work? I cant type a thing.

Im using swype as well. in portrait its fine, i can swipe all day. hmmmmmmm

Lifehacker put a bunch of on demand music subscription services against eachother recently, a lot of them were for Android.

I like Grooveshark but it can be a very messy experience. A lot of things are named wrong, versions are unofficial or things just can't be found. It is a mostly amazing experience and the $3/month for the app is the most reasonable but I've been looking at:

MOG http://mog.com/
4744077_9fda_625x625.jpg

vs

Rdio http://www.rdio.com/#//
4744061_9b81_625x625.jpg

Both are about $10/month, have about 7 million songs, allow streaming on the site and in the app and you can download songs to play from the device without a connection. Both are really polished; my problem with Rdio was it kept leaving me in an endless "getting connection" type screen when I would leave and come back to the app. I'm going to try MOG now.

Anyone using any of these?

Yeah, it shows up like that in the app, but on the desktop program, it is normal along with the foursquare site.

Ah, did you figure out how to get an actual location? The map in the tweet area doesn't do it, and the actual map button doesnt seem to take you to any locations.

EDIT: In fact, the map button keeps kicking me back the the main screen, and the my location button on the map doesn't work. Beta indeed. :D

Hm. Yeah, I was able to get a location just fine. Using either the map method, or message bubble icon.

Does the map button in the lower right work for you?

I'll keep messing with it.
Yeah, that works fine for me. I click it, then over a few seconds, already created places show up, then I can pull up a menu to check in, etc.

Hmm, maybe my version is messed up, the map screen keeps kicking me back to my list, and if I do get it to stay open that button doesn't do anything. Maybe I'll redownload.

EDIT: Still doing it.

i asked a few days ago and haven't gotten a response, i'd be interested in knowing what you think about both of them. The only issue is i have a ton of music that i could stream from my home server, but the times when i'm out partying with some friends is when i want to hear music i dont own

I'm testing Grooveshark, Rdio and Mog. I'll report back with mini-thoughts.

:lol

You're a special kind of scared shitless when you drop your app from ten fucking bucks to free.

...I'm gonna try it out though right now!

I'm mostly laughing at the comments of the people who paid for it. I would be furious! :lol

An app is like anything else you buy. There's always the chance that what you buy today could be half off next week (or free, happens all the time).

I like Vlingo immediately because of the way it’ll read texts to you so you can hear them while driving or just hanging around.

One cool thing I didn’t expect – if you say Twitter followed by the message you are asked to set the default app to give the message to (obviously because there are different twitter apps)…but the cool thing is if I avoid setting a default, I can click other apps to input the voice to such as 3Banana. Holding search button -> “Twitter this is my note” ->tap 3banana, tap save is faster than opening 3Banana, clicking new note, clicking the text box, clicking the virtual microphone button, speaking and then hitting save.

It's also a lot better than Google's "note to self" which sends you a fucking email. So lame.

I might keep Vlingo. Damn.

edit: The coolest feature - reading incoming texts - needs work. It's low as hell even on the highest volume and she randomly decides to stop reading everytime I test it. A lot less need for it now...

Yeah $10 is a lot to throw down. Hopefully new users will combat the inevitable one star reviews.

Exactly. From Mass Effect (YUCK) to any other random game - buying on iPhone was a perfect hell. I would avoid spending more than 99cents most of the time...I lost track of how many times I bought something for $3-$10 to have it 99cents within days. They have a right to lower prices but it pissed me off every time!

Tweetdeck is so awesome.

I just uninstalled both Twitter and Facebook from my phone because I have pretty much no need for them anymore thanks to tweetdeck.

The only thing I don't think I can do now is uploading pictures to facebook from my phone... but I never did that anyway so :lol

Indeed, the notifications are driving me nuts though. New tweets every couple minutes and the LED goes off. :lol

EDIT: They really need a widget and I will be set.

It is indeed awesome. But I'm keeping the Twitter and FB apps around because not all functionality is there in TweetDeck. I did, however, deactivate notifications for both apps (TweetDeck more than makes up for this and that should be addressed soon hopefully). And I'll actually probably always keep at least FB just so contacts are kept synced - but that would be the only activity I would allow in the future.

A widget addition will make me never look back for sure, though!

Go to the photo itself through the gallery, then share

Need to have Facebook installed for that... I may keep Facebook installed for that and the fact that you can't see people's info from Tweetdeck.

Yeah, Facebook specifically is very barebones in Tweetdeck. The only thing I do on Twitter is check tweets so Tweetdeck has more then enough for me.

I just noticed a way to set notifications for TweetDeck. It is pretty basic, but in the app under any column, press settings, then select manage columns. From there, you can turn notifications on and off. For now, you're limited to column-wide notification toggling only. So, under the Home column, it's an all or nothing proposition and same with Direct Messages and the Me columns.

That should at least address the constant blinking on everyone's LED notifications to some degree lol.

Edit: Found this review that tipped me off.

Not surprising, but the press conference couldn't really do justice to how well they've integrated general voice activation across the android OS now. This is really nice.

Cheers for that!
I thought the constant update frequency would murder my battery but it seems ok so far

I could write a ridiculously long review for all of them but instead of rambling I'll try to keep it short and to the point.

Grooveshark just isn't in the same league as the other apps. It crashes and pauses by itself. It's UI is ugly. There's a lot lot lot of flicking involved because of all the duplicates and mess that Grooveshark hosts and since it's unofficial/user uploaded there's a lot of missing songs in albums. Your favorite track could be missing. It's cheap but not worth it - at least as of right now. $3/month

Both MOG and Rdio are good but I recommend trying them both out to see which you prefer.

MOG is gorgeous and very Android. The music plays pretty quick but it's not that user friendly. The bottom row of buttons aren't too clear to understand and when you touch one, they all change. It's easy to get lost but it has everything I looked for, it's officially licensed so the catalog is complete and neat and it performed well. Downloading songs for offline listening was super simple and quick. Trying to exit the app is a mess; I think it's taking me back to every screen I had looked at because I'd exit and see another MOG screen and have to do this 8 times but you could always pause/stop the song and not exit. The sound quality was good, it has radio Pandora-like features and it's nice. No landscape though. $10/month

Rdio is a nice app but it's very basic. It has everything I looked for as it's officially licensed like MOG. It seems to be pretty user oriented; it's very clean and minimalistic. The nice thing is if you search for an album or artist it will also show relevant "popular" results that you may be interested in. It also has Pandora-like artist radio. What sucks about Rdio is it seems to have some connection problems. Earlier it went into a Connecting message loop and wouldn't let me back in, currently I selected an album and it's loading the album forever. I'm over wifi right now so this is odd. Also, downloading songs for offline play is a bit annoying in Rdio because the button to do so is microscopic and would be annoying to hit precisely even with a stylus. $10/month

Maybe it's just me, Launcher Pro, my wifi or my Droid so Rdio is still worth checking out. None of these apps are perfect yet but MOG is the best bet in my opinion. It's gorgeous, has good sound quality, is distinctly Android in it's UI (even has a widget) and performed well. I'm sure with some time the buttons would make more sense but it doesn't seem too intuitive, Rdio is much simpler.

Start with MOG imo. I'm heavily considering subscribing. We'll see how it goes.

The problem I have with those services is their availability of music. It's very Western music. The music I mostly listen to are from Japanese games and anime (along with baroque and classical. Strange mix, I know.)

Xiialive uses Shoutcast. Maybe you'll have luck with that. It's a couple of stations that plays nothing but video game music.

Nope, I'd pay that price. However, is there anyway at this point for you to integrate bluetooth controls? I use my Wii remote to play, and I don't want to play a platform game with the screen. It just feels terrible. If I could map my controls to the Wii remote, you have an automatic sale.

Hrm, well is it possible to play Replica Island with Bluetooth controls? If so, then definitely yes.

If not, could you point me towards which apps you need (or a guide) on how to use a Wii Remote? I'm a huge Nintendo fan and the controls in 4kg are modeled after Mario's, so using a Wii Remote could definitely be the best way to play. I'd like to try some apps that do support it.

Looks like Oracle are continuing their desecration on Sun's corpse by suing Google for using Java in Android. Hey Larry Ellison, go fuck yourself.

:lol It's not even Java, it's Dalvik. Or maybe that's what they're pissed about?

But anyways, Java was making the transition to being fully open source I thought? Or did Oracle hold that up?

I don't think the VM itself is open source, though.

I heard a couple years ago that they were finally making it open though, and besides, Android doesn't even use the Java VM! It uses Dalvik, which makes the whole thing so weird. :lol

According to Wikipedia, Dalvik doesn't even interpret Java bytecode.

Of course not. Java source code has to be compiled using a Dalvik compiler to Dalvik bytecode.

At least, from how I understand it. The only thing Java-related Android should be using is the syntax for most of the apps.

Give mSpot a shot. It's YOUR music and you get 2 gigs free, more if you want to subscribe.

I made an account and put all of my wife's New Kids on the Block shit on it (She's 35 going on 18). She loves it on her Droid. :lol
