What is everyone's recommendation for a messenger? I used Meebo for a bit and liked it, curious if there is anything else better.

Jtwo, what is that notification for on the top left?

I'm sure this thing will kill your battery.
Google should use their push-intent servers for IM notifications and included all the services through Gtalk app!

LauncherPro - for dock + dock customization via icons

ATK - get rid of it you dont need it.

Personally i keep brightness on my EVO set to Auto.

Wait, ATK is useless? I thought my battery increase (actually lasting an entire day on charge) was because it was killing useless tasks in the background. (Droid Incredible here)

THIS!

Actually, can't any 3rd party app setup push service for their apps, or is Push only reserved for Google apps right now?

They can, but Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) is a Android 2.2 feature only, so many devs may be holding off until it can be more widely used in more devices.

ah, interesting. I'm actually a little surprised/disappointed that it took Google so long to make that available.

How bad is the Google Talk program on your battery? I have debated leaving it running all the time while I am away from my PC but feared the battery drain.

mine runs all the time, but it's in the background and it pushes the IMs to you. So really I think it doesn't use up any resources until you get an IM.

Yeah I agree with you.

YMMV But I haven't noticed too big of a difference in the battery with or without chat running.

isn't this what the new trillian versions do? i mean if it's sending emails for missed messages, they're monitoring on the server somewhere.

Thanks guys, I was always nervous about running things all the time.

Install Spare Parts off Marketplace (it free)

Open up the app, go to battery usage - Partial Wake Useage. You will then get a rundown of all the apps that are sucking up juice from the battery. If its pretty high, uninstall.

I'm checking Trillian out and I'd like to know if there's a way to leave an icon in the notification bar whenever it's running, like every other IM app do... it's very hard to know whether the app is running/logged in or not.

Also, email me everytime I get a new IM? Wouldn't be easier to make the icon blink or something like that?

1. Why are apps generally so much slower than sites? Touch.facebook.com or mobile Twitter can load a page worth of post content in a second - the apps have to refresh for a long time in comparison. Same with Fandango.

2. Holy shit Google has added a bunch of preloaded, uninstallable shit into Android over the years. Sick of memory running out bc I install cool apps I find on my Droid and sick of a bunch of slow apps so I went on an uninstalling spree since the only apps I really need are a browser and 3banana. I want to uninstall Twitter but I can't. Same for Lattitude and the tens of other apps Google bakes in and populates the app list with. Too much and them duplicating icons for the same app (maps, places, navigation...3 icons for 1 core app) doesn't help.

Guess ill go back to LP and hide some stuff.

You can also root the phone and uninstall stock bloatware with Titanium Backup

Wow, my battery consumption is insanely low since I installed Samdroid on my Spica. I've been on the internet (2G), playing music non-stop (Google Listen) and using Trillian, and I'm still on 90% after 3 hours.

Maybe it's also because I installed a package to optimize the CPU with ARM11 instructions or something like that, that makes it somehow more efficient.

I may or may have not already asked this, but what's the best music player?

I got my Galaxy S today :D Playing with it now. Need to figure out how to set my background and such.

Protip: Unless you are a fan of the iPhone-esque interface, install Launcher Pro and use that.

To set wallpaper, press the menu button on the homescreen and select wallpaper. To get a custom wallpaper just go into Gallery, choose the picture you want and Set As Wallpaper.

There are several options:

- MixZing -> the best one out there, has a lot of features. In the other hand, the paid version is insanely expensive for a mobile app ($7) and eats battery and bandwidth (cover art download, ads in the free version) like a champion.
- Zimly -> Still in beta. Works fairly good but doesn't have equalizer and the interface is clunky. No ads
- MortPlayer -> Beta as well, works good, and organizes music by folders instead of tags. No ads either. No equalizer.

I'm currently sticking with MortPlayer, as the stock Samsung music player, though usable, has an ugly as sin and really unresponsive widget and tends to keep on playing music instead of stopping when you have an incoming call (which doesn't sound) so you miss them.

The stock Dinc player is pretty nice if not for the fact that when I turn shuffle on it shuffles all the songs instead of like a playlist shuffle on the Ipod which is annoying. I don't want to hear the same song 3 times in a row.

Just got the OTA Update for Froyo today on my Bugless Beast Droid already running Froyo... how do I disable the update from happening besides just pressing install later over and over?

Also Giant Bomb Beta most popular for men... represent! :D

I bought LauncherPro Plus last night but I'm not quite clear on the new things I can do... I'm gonna go through the changelogs when I get home, but if someone could save me some time and tell me, that'd be most appreciated!

The LauncherPro site could do with a 'sticky' at the top that lists all the current features or something.

AppBrain site just got a decent overhaul today:

http://blog.appbrain.com/2010/08/new-ways-to-find-android-apps-you-like.html

cleaned up the layout a bit and added a number of new app filtering options, using annoymous user stats like country of residence and age. So now you can see the most popular apps in certain countries and by age group.

I am ashamed by the top apps list for my fellow trigenarians. :(

i havent used appbrain in ages, but shit, it looks MUCH better, and with the push install, i jumped back in

Does anyone know what could make the lock screen disappear? Mine doesn't show up anymore. I'm on an X and it disappeared after installing a couple apps last night (LP update, Home Switcher and a couple others that shouldn't have affected the lock screen).

P.S. Anyone else having battery issues with the latest version of Tajm?

Are there any apps that let you sync itunes library and playlists?

iSyncr will let you do playlists pretty easily. That's the best app I've personally used thus far. I do remember someone on here saying that they had trouble with it so maybe YMMV.

Word Feud is good fun once you find people who actually play the game and don't disappear on you! Shame there is no way to end games that you know are not going to go anywhere.

Just scored 175 points with Dreadful, two triple words a double letter and bonus for using all my letters. :D

i love it, but i want a paid version so badly.

they said they are investigating ways to kill games for people who don't start or play.

Its so hard to continue to play when someone bombs you with a 175pt turn. It saps all your willingness to continue.

I got my first android phone today, the HTC desire.
What are the essential free apps for a new user?
A friend of mine told me that I need a task manager, which one do you guys recommend?
The app store is a bit overwhelming and so is the OP. :lol

Yeah, those pop-up ads after every move are a bit tooooo intrusive for my liking. I guess they don't want to go putting a paid-up app as otherwise the owners of Scrabble will be after them quicker than you can say Kwyjibo.

Don't worry about a task killer. You don't need one, and using one will only create problems. Apps using up memory in the background don't do anything but take up memory. They aren't using up your battery and android will kill anything it needs to in order to free up memory as apps you are using need it.

Your friend was wrong about needing a task manager, don't get one. As far as free apps.. 3banana, Launcher Pro, Pandora, Music Mod, and tons of others if you read through a couple of previous pages.
