7 homescreens is overkill really on the hero... I tend to only use these two

The reason my far left screen is so cluttered is because its rarely used. Tasks/Music, turning off features or killing tasks to save the battery. I could do with making it nicer though, true :p

Cool radiohead..maybe you can start a thread to post your phone desktop. I would do that myself but unfortunately my thread creating rights have been taken away. As far as the 7 screens I actually use them all. I really enjoy customizing it.

...what?

I can see why :lol

He means a "Post Your Smartphone Desktop" thread, I imagine.

If it were easier to take native screenshots (it's a breeze with some of the replacement apps, but not on vanilla homescreen), I'd say it was a decent idea.

So I've been using the Dolphin browser on my Cliq since I got it and the last few days its been crashing like crazy. I cleared the cache, cookies, history, everything and it still gave me trouble. So I uninstalled it, tried the default browser and it runs so much faster than Dolphin. I think ill try it for awhile. If I decide to go back to the Dolphin, any tips to make it run good?

Holy crap.

My wife was making a slide presentation for class with her group, and they lost track of where they obtained one of the charts. They needed the source, and after scrambling and shuffling through papers for a few minutes, she tried taking a picture of the image with Google Goggles and the search was able to track down the chart!

She said it saved them upwards of two hours of going through various books.

Amazing.

That's either a handset specific issue, or something else causing the crashes (as programs terminate themselves from memory on a regular basis, it would be more likely to be something with a widget on the homescreen)

My only complaint with Dolphin is that the scrolling and zooming is nowhere near as smooth and elegant as the standard HTC browser. The context menu when you click and hold, the gestures, the bookmarks and tabs etc -- all of that makes it the superior browser.

That is pretty amazing. I wouldn't have thought about using it like that :)

Is there a wikipedia search widget?
I see wikipedia voice search, but I just want a normal search widget like the google one but that goes to wikipedia instead

So is there really no decent free screenshot application? If so, I've been playing around, and I'm pretty sure I could get one completed in not-too-much-time if people are interested.

an app for pc or an android app?

I was trying to think of how a standalone screenshot app on the phone would work, but the buttons are different in every application, I don't know how you'd trigger a snapshot. There *is* a screenshot app on the market but it needs you to have Root access for it to work properly (probably because of the need for it to be always running and triggerable somehow using the buttons as I mentioned):

If you can throw something together for PC that does what the DDMS tool does in a more user friendly way, then by all means, that'd probably be a popular idea really!

I have one so I know its there. Don't know how to link to it in the marketplace though.

No free or paid that I know of. Would love one.

So since Beautiful Widgets got that C&D letter I guess I'm stuck having to look for a new clock/weather app. Any suggestions on a replacement app or apps that look similar to the sense UI just like the beautiful widgets one did? For me the most useful things about the beautiful widgets clock and weather were the large flip-style clock and the local temperature based off of GPS location displayed in the notifications bar.

Edit: nvm I just e-mailed the creator and they actually went ahead and drastically changed the look of the widget set. I actually prefer this look to the old one. I'll try and post a screen cap in a bit.

OK, I'll spend some more time on it this weekend, then.

Upon reading more into it, I'm not entirely certain if I can actually access other Activities' Views, so it may be a no-go. If AndroidDevGAF knows any tricks, I'd appreciate it :)

I've recently read that the mytouch has been 'rooted'. Has any successfully installed 'HTC Sense' on mytouch? Is it worth it?

Yes this happened several months ago. You can even put Motoblur or Android 2.0 on it.

My beautiful Widdget... NOOOOOOOOOO! ™

Edit: "Weather Widget Donate" looks just like beautiful widget (HTC), get it quick.

Just got my droid yesterday got linked here from the droid thread. Amazing work Andrex!! Now that your unbanned I expect some updates to the recommended apps. :D :D

Just a quick info nugget for fellow Motorola Cliq/Dext users:

We got root.

That means we will have custom ROMs soon... and I can't wait to get Cyanogen or a 2.0 based ROM on my Dext.

There's an app called Badumtss (basically just a nice rimshot button :D)

Anyway, a new version 2.0.1 is supposed to be on the market, now with widget functionality however for some reason I haven't been able to download it on my Hero.

Can anyone let me know if you're able to download it? I'm thinking it needs Android 1.6 in order to be installed.

thanks!

Recently picked up the mytouch, hoooooly crap this phone is amazing. So far my favorite Apps are goggles, Google sky, and Google Maps "Navigation" (beta) feature. Thinking about d/ling shapewriter.

I got a Droid yesterday and I need an app for my messengers. Does Meebo work well on Android phones? Is there anything better?

So, my Verizon 2-year contract is up in February. With the recent release of Droid and the rumored Verizon iPhone release coming sometime Q1 (or so) next year (or it could be June; who knows...), both major consumer smartphone platforms are going to be battling it out for my affections. I'm not so concerned about things on the hardware side, but I do have my questions about software/application comparisons. Simply put, do the availability and quality of apps available on the Android marketplace match up with what's been released on the App Store? I just see everyone and their dog releasing iPhone applications for every purpose you could think of, not to mention the sheer number of games on the platform, and I have to wonder whether or not, in choosing an Android device, I'd be limiting myself in terms of functionality, etc.

Anyone? Having practically zero previous smartphone experience, I'll really have nothing with which to compare my final choice, but I'd still love to get a more objective opinion on the subject.

So far I have found a replacement in terms of app or feature for every important task I used my iPod Touch for over on the Droid.

Podcasts, reading twitter, streaming radio, media player, RSS reader, EBook reading, multi client IMing...etc etc plus new stuff I couldn't do (Google Sky is awesome).

The one thing you won't want an Android phone for at the moment would be games however, while there are few cool ones, it probably won't compare for you. Then again, I didn't get the thing for gaming in the first place so it isn't an issue for me personally.

Mileage may vary.

In the long term, you'll appreciate the fact that you can run all those apps concurrent with each other. For me the fact you can't multitask on an iPhone is exactly one of the key reasons of what makes it un-functional as a smartphone IMO if you want to discuss 'functionality'. I will say the two things that impress me so far about the Android Marketplace are 1) 24 hour refunds and 2) the super fast updates for the apps.

Are there any apps for Droid that allow the camera to take panoramic pictures? My EnV Touch had that built in and it was really awesome. I'm just looking for anything, paid or otherwise, thanks!

I posted this in the Motorola Droid thread last night, but I'm gonna repost it here:

Played an rpg on the free version of snesoid for about an hour and saved it within the game. Next time I played, there wasn't even an option to load anything. I thought you were able to save in the free version, just not save state? Same thing happened with the free version of the gensoid emulator. This sucks. :(

Am I doing something wrong or is this just how the free versions are? You can't save games at all unless you buy the full versions?

How are people getting the Neogaf logo on their home screen? I'm on a HTC Hero and i've added a bookmark link to the homescreen yet it doesn't have the logo.

Thats what I did but I just get a picture of a piece of paper with a globe in the middle.

I just made another one...

Try adding the bookmark to your browser first if you didn't already.

Go to a home page, long press, shortcuts, bookmark, choose secondapps.com/neogaf bookmark. Poof.

Otherwise, sorry, no clue...It works here. :/

No doesn't seem to work on my phone, all my bookmarks on my homescreens have a piece of paper with a globe as a logo however they also have a tiny square with the website logo on in the bottom left part of the shortcut.

same thing was happening with my moto droid, so i grabbed Bettercut to allow me to fully edit any shortcut icon. there might be a free app that does the same thing.

quick .png if anyone wants to use it:

Weird, mine show as a red ribbon with a star in the center...Although sites like Picasaweb or Google Reader have their own icons as well.

Are you using a special theme/scene or something? i'm just using the standard one. I've managed to get the logo by using an app called Bookmark 2.

Nope, straight from the box. Nothing special.
