Android Software Thread - Tasty Desserts, Tastier Apps

Someone will need to do a new benchmark for the Nexus, because it doesn't appear to take advantage of any of the OpenGL ES 2.0 features, nor the added speed SnapDragon gives on this particular app. It just runs it at or around the framerate intended.

There are lots of vids of devices running NeoCore on YouTube if you're interested in seeing how they perform...

The "running apps" drawer in dxTop makes it even simpler than that, but I know dxTop isn't for everybody (though I definitely couldn't live without it now, for autorotating the homescreen alone).

How is the speed of dxTop, and would you say its better than OpenHome, GDE, Panda etc?

I like the TouchFlo/Sense UI homescreen that came on the Hero, but if anything out there performs a little slicker, I'll switch

The speed of dxTop on the Droid is fantastic, and easily smokes the stock home app. I have only tried OpenHome and Panda, but both had impressive sliding speed that rivaled dxTop almost exactly from what I remember. I think the main advantage dxTop has over those is the "diamond" arrangement- you can get from any one screen to any other in just one swipe; of course, there are only four, and Panda and Sense allow you up to 7 I think.

dxTop has a bunch of awesome features that the others don't, though, in my opinion- a context menu for apps/shortcuts that let you change icons, jump to their market page for a quick uninstall, etc.; autorotate of home screen with accelerometer; a hotdock you can get to at any time by sliding over the two drawers; an extra column and categories on the all apps drawer...

What do I mean by categories you ask? This is what I see when I open my apps drawer, instead of all that clutter:

And if I pop one open:

Basically I'm in love with it. But really, performance on the Hero might ultimately remain best with Sense, as it's optimized for it by HTC.

Hmm, I have to try dxtop now. I already have that app organizer thing, but if it was built right into the app drawer, that would free up even more space. Thanks!

No prob. You can of course make a "folder" out of a category- I put one for my System and Utilities apps on the dock. I think dxTop is the only paid app I have besides the emulators (mmm, save states), but it was more than worth the 3 bucks for me.

dxTop does run a little bit sluggish on the Hero. Particularly if you have a few widgets going - I used it enough to fully organise my apps into categories like you have though, and I really like the custom icons for shortcuts on the homepage(s). Really nice! I was considering getting a refund, but I think I'll keep it just incase the eventual 2.1 rom for hero causes a speed increase.

What is the dxTop theme you're using in those screenshots btw?

Anyone know when the F dropbox is coming to the Market? That is one App that I would LOVE to see hit here soon.

Better Keyboard seems more accurate then the stock Nexus One keyboard. Am I imagining things?
Nope. I just got it yesterday and the thing is 100x better than the stock one. Now if they add a multi-touch component to it, godlike confirmed.

Multi-touch would make it almost perfect. I still feel that the HTC Keyboard is the best...hands down. I love it how it automatically adds words you pick in the suggestion bar to your dictionary. But it doesn't look right on the Nexus. I can't wait for this keyboard to be available on a device with a higher resolution, so that Droid and Nexus owners can get a proper transfer :D

I did buy Better Keyboard and I installed the iPhone theme on to it :D It is easier on my eyes to find the keys...or it could be I've been typing on the iPhone keyboard for over two years. :lol

From the market I have bought:

Better Keyboard
Pure Calender
Beautiful Widgets

I was able to find and install the Acer NemoPlayer. Looks OK, but it runs in the background all the time! Not sure why. The stock player doesn't do this. Once you are done with it there are no background services running (at least not that I can tell). The Widget for it looks nice. But I uninstalled it, will keep my more functional (less pretty) stock player.

I wonder if we will be able to run MediaScape from the X10 on the Nexus and Droid. We need a better Media Player ;-?

Edit:

Awesome star warp live wallpaper on the market...search for: Stanfield 3d live wallpaper! :D

Are there any good document readers out there? It seems the Nexus can handle reading PDFs by default, but Office documents do not seem to be supported. And on the market it seems the only option is some $15 app? There has to be something that is seamless and lets me download, open, and read those documents in emails, websites, etc.

And is Better Keyboard worth it coming from the default Nexus keyboard? What are the advantages? I'm also confused on why the thing needs network access. Seems weird.

Network access is only require for voice to text imput. Most people don't realize that this fuction requires a connection to Google severs for it to work.

No no no... Keylogging. ;)

But seriously--- a topic that I'm going to explore adding to the OP for the Nexus as people on all internet fronts seem to be freaking out about it.

Keylogging? How is this thing still up in the market if its keylogging everything you type?

Mmm, now that you metion it I remember reading that "keylogging" was removed from the HTC Keyboard apk, at the xda forum. So is this an OS thing?

Sales age invasion: do we have any source providing Android Market growth rates? I'm sure it's growing, simply because the number of handsets is growing so rapidly. The question is how rapidly.

Anyone know of any data provided?

Flurry is the best we have, but they only track apps with their analytics library installed.

I see... Well the voice thing makes sense, then.

I'm really concerned about the document viewing, though. I think my only option is to go for the paid app. Luckily it's not $15, but like $10, however.

Edit: Well not taking the plunge just yet. Seriously the only viable app is $10 and apparently does not allow you to view PDFs from non-Gmail accounts? Really?

Has the secondapps.com neogaf portal not been working for anyone else the last few days? I keep getting errors with it :(

neogaf in general has been slower these past few days so I think it has something to do with that.

Oh yeah? That sucks. Well here's another question, then: has something happened with YouTube? I keep getting flash errors on my HTC hero too.

Me too... some videos are played without a problem, most just don't work. It's really annoying :(

Neogaf has been getting hit with a shit ton of traffic lately and the app has been timing out. No surprise.

Not to go too far off topic, but why has GAF been getting so much traffic? Something going on that I didn't hear about? Been noticing frequent 500's as well...

This looks interesting, and very very polished:

Some hands on:

This is really cool, and I was all ready to go ahead and use it for a while. Unfortunately, the font they use doesn't seem to support other languages such as Japanese and Korean, and so a lot of my RSS feed and Twitter items show up completely blank. Unfortunately, that's enough to keep me from using it. Shame, because it's a very neat idea.

Yeah, they just approved about 10,000 new juniors.

Glosslite, it's free.

Dolphin Browser 2.0 is up and it runs so much better on the droid. Try it!

THIS. And do yourself a favor and install the cyan candy theme on top.

Slidescreen looks interesting...

I have a Hero, and I've had errors - here's what I do to avoid them:

If you browse youtube from Dolphin Browser, you can select which app you want to open Youtube videos with by clicking on the video link (I think). Selecting HTC flash player often results in errors for me, whereas opening using the Youtube app works everytime. I have the mobile youtube site as a favourite in dolphin for this purpose.

Damn I want an Android phone so bad. I had no idea that this level of in-depth awesomeness was available for customization.

So, against my better judgement I bought Slidescreen Pro.

OP updated with info on Android 2.1, "Froyo," and Sony-Ericsson's Android skin renaming (from Nexus UX to Timescape & Mediascape.)

Impressions?
Returned it.
It's neat for a few minutes, but a tad glitchy and ultimately hard to use.
I could see maybe keeping it around as just an app for twitter and RSS, but as a homescreen replacement it wasn't worth the 7 bucks, in my opinion.

There is no difference between the paid and free version though, the free version just has a constant ad on the bottom for the paid release.

Agreed, hated it. It did nothing to make my phone more efficient or even functional than it already is. If anything it made things more difficult at the stake of simply 'looking good' which is something that will never go over well with me.
