Android Software Thread - Tasty Desserts, Tastier Apps

Anyone know of a good AudioBoo alternative? Mine crashes at around the 1:20 point in a recording. I asked the devs and they said it's a small team and it would be a while before they could fix it. I really want to use it more often too, but that is an unacceptable bug.

Agreed, hated it. It did nothing to make my phone more efficient or even functional than it already is. If anything it made things more difficult at the stake of simply 'looking good' which is something that will never go over well with me.

If I could have it be my "main" homescreen in dxTop, and somehow still keep my other three, I'd be all over it. Basically eye candy in its current form.

Just thought I'd pipe in and say that after complaining about AudioBoo on twitter, the AudioBoo account responded to me saying that there will be an update to the Android version soon to fix these issues.

Not sure if this app has been posted or not, but I couldn't find it in the marketplace. There are other XBMC remote apps but this one takes the cake:

There are way more pictures showing the UI of this gem: http://code.google.com/p/android-xbmcremote/wiki/Gallery

Not sure why this thing is not up on the market, this app is worth at least a $1.00 price tag. I found three other remote apps for XBMC and Boxee, but none of them match this one.

The setup last night was a breeze, and I was able to browse my whole collection on the phone and chose what to watch or hear without even looking up at the TV. You can also use it as a plain on navigation remote for XBMC.

This thing is amazing, well polished, and has so many futures in the works.
Again, not sure if posted but in any case I still want to show my love for this little gem.

So apparently Meridian Player is going to start collecting user data with a new update. I'm reading the comments and everyone is going ape shit about it, uninstalling and giving 1 star ratings. HILARIOUS.

What would be the purpose of that? To sell off the user info to 3rd parties?

Oh, the author is from China: http://sites.google.com/site/eternalsandbox/Home

Maybe the government over there is asking him to do this? To make sure people are not watching porn on their phones? :::shrugs:::

The video actually has a lot of interesting looking games, I was surprised.

Also, Android got an AVATAR game? :lol

Fucked around a lot with Runes today. All the french is annoying and it needs quite a bit of work, but it's actually incredibly fun. The battle system somehow manages to be unique and the options for your initial character are pretty cool. I'm Hawkian on it if anybody wants to play.

How do I go about getting a refund on an app I bought no more then 10 min ago?

Thanks

Should be able to go into the Market, hit installed apps, and then uninstall. Or something like that.

I highly recommend Camera Zoom FX. Incredible camera (photo, not video) replacement app for $2! Tons of options including image stabilization, 6x zoom, burst shot mode, Facebook uploading, GPS tagging, autosave, and tons of really cool post processing effects and addons.

I also highly recommend trying out the X-Scope browser. It's simplistic looking compared to Dolphin but has pinch to zoom, 1 finger (fast and well implemented) pin zoom, volume rocker as page up/down, screen always on, download manager (download anything such as youtube files), file manager, task killer, and it's MUCH faster than Dolphin. $3 and worth every penny!

Best part is that the developer is constantly looking for feedback and implementing suggestions and bugfixes: http://androidforums.com/android-applications/20831-xscope-multitouch-pinch-zoom-browser-9.html

Is it pretty safe to use "Better Keyboard"? What do you guys think?

I prefer Swype. I hear Shapewriter is good too. The spacebar in Better Keyboard is too small for me when I'm doing heavy typing in portrait mode. Also, what good is typing on a virtual keyboard without multitouch?

Just got my Goozex newsletter...Guess what?

A big shout-out goes to Goozer Smoger who has independently developed the first Goozex Android App: Pocket Goozex!

Envision a mobile phone application where with the a few touches on your cell you scan the back of a game box at a retail store and instantly add it to your Goozex request queue. Then you say I may need some points for that game and decide to add some movies laying around home to your offers queue. All this can now be done on your Android mobile phone.

Seriously, that’s awesome! Click here to learn more about Pocket Goozex the Android app.

I use Goozex extensively. This is really cool news for me.

First the XBMC app, now a Goozex app? I barely remember what my iPhone 2G was good for. My Nexus is becoming my most useful gadget.

To be fair, Android has had a year of development. The 2G only became as useful as it did after a year of development as well (2.0 allowing App Store).

Question: I'm not too familiar with XMBC. Can I stream music from my home computer to my Nexus? From the article you posted, it seems like the answer is "it's planned but no, not currently."

No I didn't mean it that way, more like I'm no longer missing Cydia and to an extent the App Store.

You can have access to XBMC through the net, but I have not delved into that option. It might have a streaming server built into it.

I'll check this out. Do you know offhand if it will stay open in the background like pandora does? I've been using orb to serve this purpose, and it's great except they haven't added background support yet.
I got rid of it. It screwed around with my library. It changed the titling of some files. For example, "Smashing Pumpkins" to "smashing pumpkins." Then, using Windows 7, random files had a Lock symbol next to them, meaning they're not shared on my Homegroup. What a headache to remedy.

I'm not 100% sure it was Me Canto, but I believe it was as nothing else changed on my PC. If you're okay with those changes, it should work for you. I *think* it ran in the background. I can't remember off the top of my head. Try uploading one song to find out.

Re: Mecanto - interesting info. I'm giving Subsonic a try, at my house it seems to work fine but I've only messed around with it for a few minutes.

I have a question about ring profiles. I'm currently using Ring Toggle (free) but I want something more full featured. The problem is Locale is now $10 and has almost too many features. Is there anything in between? I'd really like to customize a few different ring profiles. Sorry if this has been covered but I didn't see anything in the thread so far.

Oh jeez.. There is definitely at least one free ringer profile out there, that is based on time of day / day (unlike Locale which is GPS), but I can't remember what it's called

You know what works better though? Beautiful Widgets has a widget called Beautiful Vibrate. I put it on my homescreen and voila, vibrate on, ringer off and back to normal with a simple toggle widget.

I can't say I really need Locale or the other app I was using now, the widget is simple and effective. Beautiful Widgets isn't free, but maybe there's another Vibrate widget out there.

Can we get a big Fuck You for Locale? The developer is very shady. The application is $10 and doesn't even work.

The worst part? He's collecting your info and sending it off with flurry agent. There's no mention of it anywhere but people have logs showing this tracking. Ridiculous.

That sucks. I wonder if Settings Profile does the same? It seems to have very similar features (although I have not looked at Locale in full) and costs much less.

I use timeriffic and love it.

I messed around with this but it was too time-based for me and since my schedule is not so 100% set I didn't find it very useful. My meetings vary day to day which is why something syncing with the Calendar would be sweet so that I could have a "Meeting" setting and then a standard setting that automatically changed during meetings. Right now I just use Settings Profile Lite to manually switch between the two and added a few others I might use during a movie or something.

I'd say that definitely warrants a Fuck You. Is there any sort of refund system in place for the Android marketplace?

Yes, I think you have 72 hours to get a full refund of your purchase.

Just go back to that app's page on the store and at the bottom there will be an "Uninstall/Refund" button.

Is there something that will allow me to simultaneously post to Twitter and Facebook via different methods? When I share a picture to Twitter, it's a URL to an external service. But if I share it on Facebook, it should use FB's own upload service. I guess it would have to perform two actions in the background while I just share the picture once.

Where does the app purchase information get stored? If suppose I get a new/replacement android phone, will I still be able to download the apps I already purchased?

Google Checkout. My friend went from the G1 to the Nexus One and all his purchase history on the market got transferred over with his Gmail account.

The XBMC app is awesome!! Just the other day I was watching an episode of Fringe, got a text and a call...the show was paused while the call came in and a pop-up of the contact came up on the screen. When the text message came in, I got a small pop-up with a preview of the text and contact info :D So much win!!!

I believe the developer of the app is just testing it out, adding features and such. Once he feels it's a complete product he will start selling it on the market.

Not an android app that I'm aware of (there's one for iPhone), but you could try the Posterous.com blog service. Free and autoposts to a variety of social networking sites, including Twitter and FB, obviously. I think it allows for the scenario you described. Like most blogging services, they support updates via email, so you could do it that way via android.

A watershed moment in Android history is made today!

http://googlenexusoneboard.blogspot.com/2010/02/new-software-update-for-nexus-one.html

Google said:
Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive an over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced, including:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:
  • Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com - access your favorite places from your phone or computer
  • Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history - makes it easy to search for places you've searched for before
  • Night mode in Google Maps Navigation - automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving
Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week. We hope you enjoy these new features and look forward to your feedback.

Retaliation for Jobs' comments on Google's motto? "If they say we're trying to kill the iPhone, we might as well go for it!"

I think this completes the Google/Apple split that started with the Google Voice debacle.

I just wonder why they did it now. They didn't put it in 2.1 which would have really bumped up the reviews of Nexus One, and they didn't hold off until the next Android version or even Google I/O, which would've been a great way to unveil it. Ah well, I'm just happy it's finally here.

Too many of the reviews were looking for an iPhone killer, so none of this would have really killed the iPhone. Pinch-to-zoom isn't the extent of the multitouch complaint for those who care about MT.

A lot of that stuff just seems like throw-ins. Obviously the main concern has been the 3G support, which is what everyone has been waiting for on the N1. Seems like they just decided to pad out the release with a few extras. Though, that's probably going to get a few people angry about how much longer they had to wait to get the 3G fix due to waiting on these extra features passing approval. :lol

*crossing fingers for successful 3G patch*
