Android Software Thread - Tasty Desserts, Tastier Apps

Went to buy WidgetLocker and I'm stuck in the Authorizing Purchase thing... hopefully this sorts itself out... by next week.

Man, I want to root my HTC Magic, but I am just too afraid of bricking it.
Is there a failsafe way to do it? I would love to run the newly released cyanogen mod with 2.2 on it, even though its only a release candidate.
I wish, there would be a skript, that just does the thing itseld, but i guess something like that is not available.
i am pretty much a casual user, so i dont know anything about the phone or the rooting scene, so even some aspects in the official tutorials are "wait, i have to look up what that means"-area for me. :(

Widgetlocker is almost perfect, but I have a lockscreen pin and this renders the app useless to me. It forces me to slide twice before I get to enter the code.

I checked the settings and don't see an option for pin or pattern lock.

Simply loading up your Google Reader in the browser is the best way IMO. I love it.

Freaking awesome on the X too. :D

That's what I do too. I created a Reader shortcut on one of my screens. I guess the only downside is that the articles don't get stored offline.

Yeah, that's what I do too - and it is a great reader.. unfortunately, as you said, the fact that it doesn't store offline is the issue - though I guess reader doesn't take too much data - I'm on my old iPhone 3g plan, and am waiting for the contract to expire, so the data limit on that is terrible

Google Reader works really well even over 2g, considering the kind of full feeds with images I pull. The method of loading 15 items at a time works well, as long as you've got some kind fairly consistent network connection

So has any phone gotten the 3d launcher aside from N1? I thought phones weren't getting it because of power (droid being too weak) but Droid X doesn't have it either.

That's a supercool part of the ui. Shame.

Droid X is running some sort of custom Motorola UI. It's not stock android.

Not sure when it happened but Zimly got some updates and is now pretty killer, I think I'll be using it for music primarily.

It's crazy, with quite a few nice media players on the market, Google could just snatch one up, make a few changes and have a nice new official music player out in 2 days. I hope they truly are "laser focused" on UI for Gingerbread, Android is very awesome but it requires some compromise and there's no need for it, just be awesome all around please.

Yeah, but seems odd that they'd want to take away something so cool. Wonder what the reasoning there is.

What's the best google reader ...reader? I am still a little surprised the google has yet to deliver their own offline version for the os..

FeedR. It's a couple of pound, but well worth the price. Easily the best Reader I've used so far. Love it.

yep, and your statement also applies to Moto making it harder to install custom ROMs on the X.

Newsrob is good, too.

I stopped using RSS apps because I didn't see the use for them, really. But now that I'm working in NYC and commuting in the subway everyday, I'm seeing the benefit of the mighty caching abilities they provide.

Rooting seems like such a hassle. I've looked into it quite a bit and with so many custom ROMs, I wouldn't do anything unless you have step by step directions for your phone type. You can't do anything without a custom rom correct? I wish rooting was as simple as jailbreaking.

huh? rooting is hella simple.

how are you getting that's it hard? It's like a 5 step process the first time. after that it takes 2 minutes to switch roms.

Can anyone tell me how some of these users appear to have 5 rows of icons in normal horizontal view on the droid? I see users with weather at the top, and then 16 icons on top of that, and I'm oh-so-jealous.

Personally.. the only thing hard for me regarding rooting my HTC Desire was picking which custom rom was the best which adds what I need/want to the phone - something that is hardly possible with jailbreaking, but moreorless just as easy to apply as jailbreaking - just use RomManager to install custom roms, which are tailored to your phone once it is rooted

I think the answer to this one is no, but I'll try in any case.. is there any way to make on-going notifications appear under normal notifications? I just feel like as I install more apps, I have to scroll down if I get any more than 3 notifications

Am I the only one who has fun testing Android voice recognition software? It is really, really good.

Words correctly recognized by voice search:
  • Onomatopoeia
  • Christiano Renaldo
  • Frankincense
  • Californication
  • Pashtun
  • Andrea Doria
  • Apropos
  • In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree
  • The Legend of Crystania

It only really seems to struggle with words from non-English languages (my locale is set to English). It couldn't recognize "onigiri", "Bhagavad Gita" or "Amaterasu" (which it identified as 'Amateur Ass 2' :lol )

But it can do Korean now!

(I'm trying it out now. It doesn't recognize a single sentence I saw. T_T )

Just downloaded Skies of Glory great game, I been playing it for a while and it's awesome. I'd highly recommend it. Really deserves to be played only on the highend phones, I doubt Eris or Hero could run this.

Just use Quick Settings and forget about widgets for this type of stuff.

Depends. If he wants to switch between 2G and 3G it can be done with Quick Settings, but if he wants to disable the APN connection completely, this can only be done with a widget as there's no way to turn it off in the settings besides deleting/editing the APN everytime you want to turn the connection on and off. In this case -> APNdroid.

I will tell you the games I have-

Abduction!
Air Control
Alchemy (Get this! So addicting and can play anywhere)
Armored Strike (Paid)
ArtfulBits aiMinesweeper
Basketball Shot
Bonsai Blast (Full campaign and everything, much better then average free games)
Chess
Connect4
Cubes (Beta, made by a Gaffer!)
Jewellust (Paid)
Mahjong
Paper Toss
Replica Island
Robo Defense (Paid, so addicting!)
Tetronimo (Free tetris clone)
Traffic Jam

Battleflood is my new fav game of the moment. It's a very barebones app and I wouldn't really recommend paying for the premium version right now. But the core game is addictive so get the free version and wait till the dev fleshes out the package a bit.

I recently got a captivate and when sending or receiving messages it doesn't show the images or video - or the text if it is attached to video/pictures.

Am I missing something or is this a known flaw? The phone says "downloading" but never comes up with the media on the download side and it never even shows up on the phone it was sent too.

Also is there a decent way to get froyo on the captivate or do I have to wait for ATT and Samsung to get it to me?

My friend has a Droid and wants a Favorite People widget, similar to what I have on my Sense Incredible. Any options out there?

I already set him up with the Fancy clock Widget + Launcher Pro.
I would also like an app like this.

I like using the Voice Dialer to launch apps and such, but does anyone know how the hell to launch google maps? "open maps" "open google maps", etc. doesn't work. I like to pop open the traffic layer on maps on my way home.

Also, for other fellow Incredible owners:

Sounds like the OTA update may be halted to instead focus on getting 2.2 onto the phone in a few weeks.
I know "Navigate to [place]" works, but I don't know about just opening the app.

Yeah, it's odd. "open internet", "open pandora", "open shazam" etc.. all work fine and pop the app open. "open maps", nada.

anyone know what the latest is on the official 2.2 release for the moto droid?

from what i read its being included in the next OTA. They had a OTA ready for this past weekend but pushed it back to rumors of 2.2 being ready.

is there any benefit whatsoever to waiting for the official release instead of rooting? it voids any kind of warranty, right?

it does, so you'll have to unroot if you ever need to bring your phone in. there's no way to tell if a phone was rooted or not. I had to do this before actually.

Rooting opens you up to a lot more stuff though. Like custom themes and faster roms.
