PowerAmp or Winamp

I wasn't asking for another music program. I love DoubleTwist, I just want to use a different icon. Something more like a generic music icon.

For that matter, can you change an app's icon without rooting? I'm on a Droid X here.

I remember seeing somewhere someone mentioning an app that doesn't allow your phone to use data from the network? (I.E. force stay wifi). Anyone know the name?

Is this just for the Android home screen? You can use Desktop Visualizer to add custom icons to your home screen apps.

New facebook update - v1.4

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...s-groups-places-improved-notifications-fixes/

groups, places icons
notifications lead to app now and not mobile web version

still missing cloud to phone instant notifications (unless i'm missing it) and someone pointed out in the facebook thread that tagging photos was still not possible

one cool addon i noticed is that you can set someones contact icon from within facebook, from any picture - is that new, or has it been around?

Now for email links to open in the app. It can't be that hard. Google Maps does it.

So Netflix is now available for the small new market of Windows mobile but not for Android?

So much RAGE!

Edit:

Ooh an article that says before end of year. God, I hope so.

Edit2: If Google TV is built on the Android platform and has a netflix app, can it be that much of a stretch to include it on mobile?
I'm sure MS threw some money at Netflix just to get a big name on their market. That's the only way that choice makes any sense.

new facebook is getting better but it still sucks. facebook inc. still hates android.

http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/03/fa...ith-places-groups-iphone-gets-an-upgrade-too/

“The Android app has been behind”. The reason? When Facebook decided to start working on an Android app last year, it decided to work with an Android app shop to help them build their app. Then Google bought the company they were using, which knocked it behind — this is one reason the iPhone app has traditionally gotten new features months before Android does.

It seems Google hates Facebook on Android.
So I guess Google is the one to blame...who knew. :lol

Question -- From the OS Settings menu, does autosyncing need to be activated so that the gmail app can receive e-mails instantly?

I was under the impression that gmail used the "push" approach to deliver e-mail?

Contrarily, my Google Voice app gets updates instantly without OS-autosyncing activated. Google Voice has it's own "send background data" option under its settings, perhaps Gmail should do the same down the line?

Yeah. Go to Settings > Accounts and Sync > Google and you should see sync options for contacts, mail and calendar. You want mail or all three to be ticked, as well as auto-sync checked. I'm not sure if background data has to be checked for gmail but it is on mine. There are widgets that allow you to disable auto-syncing if you need to for the sake of the battery or something.

edit: I think it does function in a push-mail sort of way, it must have its own listener or something... because its almost immediate for me.

So, fellow G2ers, looks like there's an OTA rolling out soon that should fix issues like the reboot problems so many of us are having. Also hoping that it gives us some insight on how to root...

We're having reboot problems? Would this include the OpenGL driver bugs that a lot of the live wallpapers warn about? Just got mine last weekend, so far I'm very happy with it.

Thanks! I think found a good explanation of how push works for the Gmail app.

It is not the phone checking the server. Would I be correct in my understanding then to say it works like this:

1. Turn on Datasync on Phone.
2. Data sync alerts Gmail server that it is on, and then does no more until/unless it is turned off.
3. Gmail server records that that particular phone account is set to receive.
4. An email arrives in the Gmail account.
5. Gmail server checks the record to see if the value for Data Sync is True or False. If true it sends the email, if False, it does not.

So if I have understood correctly, the phone is not checking on a regular basis to see if mail exists, it acts only once (when the setting is changed) to indicate to the Gmail server a value of true or false for future checks by the server for the phone's availability.

There is a new beta of Firefox (Fennec) Have to say that the performance on my Droid X is terrible. The Gaf mobile site, which I tested it on took forever to load.

Promptly uninstalled it and went back to the default Android browser.

It is available here if you want to give it a try.

Speaking of which, what browser is everyone else using? I was using xScope before they butchered it. I'm currently using Dolphin HD but I think it's ugly as hell and not all that impressive either. Should I just use the default?

I currently use Dolphin on my Droid, just waiting for Opera Mobile to be released.

Just snagged this update the other day. Is there any way to make it open to the "main menu" like it used to instead of the news feed?

Did all the G2 owners get the update. I did, it seems like I can tether right now though. I thought it required a 15 dollar plan.

Any suggestions for a poker game? Just straight hold-em with computer opponents and live multiplayer.

I play Live Hold'Em from Dragon Play regularly. It's online only though.

Also seconding that Seesmic completely beats the official twitter app, and others that i've tried (twidroyd pro, touiter).

Seesmic has had some of these features for a long while that others are just now implementing

Looks like the Full Version of Leave Devil Alone has hit it the Market Place.

Awesome game. If your looking for Plant Vs Zombies, this game is for you. It actually adds quite a bit of uniqueness with the ability to cast spells. I've played about 3 levels so far and seems worth the $4.99. It does have a bit of Engrish but it is actually pretty funny.

Leave Devil Alone HD

There is a free version if you'd like to try before you buy

So Android is 3 years old today!

Are you gents and ladies happy with the OS?

There are still many things Google can improve, but they are at least heading in the right direction.
I cannot wait until November 11th...hopefully the rumors are true and we get to play around with Gingerbread. :D

I want to connect to my school's wifi, but technically (according to the site) cell phones cannot connect.

The way their wireless works is that once connected you must open your browser and log in with your school ID. When I connect my phone to the wireless I am unable to get this login page. I just get a connection failed message when trying to load any sort of page.

So I'm not sure how they prevent me from doing using the wifi after I connect. But would any of you guys know a way around this or any apps that could aid me?

I have the galaxy s (att, captivate).

Try changing the user agent on the browser? That might help....Not sure if it will work though.

Installed dolphin, changed the user agent. worked.

Thank ye!

you can do this in stock too, just FYI.

type "about:debug" in the search bar. nothing happens.
go to menu:more:settings. Scroll to the bottom, you can change the UAString setting as you'd like.

So i just got my captivate and im really liking it save for a few little quirks that im having to work around. Can someone clear a vouple things up for me?

How do i search using google in the stock browser? It says i van search using the address bar but it only gives me the version of the keyboard without the spacebar.

Is there any way to tap the top of the screen like in ios and have the browser take you back to the top of the page?

As you can probably tell I'm still getting used to the keyboard. Haha.

Also, i noticed the stock browser looks really grainy when zoomed out. Is there any way to fix it?

Hmm well you could hit the search button on your phone which will bring up Google, you could navigate to Google and do it that way if you wanted to. I have my homepage set as Google so it's not really an issue for me.

Whenever I'm in the stock browser and I touch the address bar, it then says "Search or type URL" and I have the option to use the spacebar. Droid X w/ 2.2 here. Not sure why you can't use the spacebar.

and Oh, the new Google Maps update is very nice.

I like the new toolbar at the top with an integrated search, Places, Layers, and My Location.

I may be imaging it, but I feel like the map image loads a lot faster now when you scroll to an area that needs to download.

One thing that I find annoying in general with Maps is you really need to have GPS on for it to function. I'm at work right now and cannot get a GPS signal, but obviously I can scroll around on the map and find my current location since I know where I am. So when I go to "Places" and click on coffee, it says "Waiting for Location" and can't find it because it can't get a GPS signal at work. Same thing with Buzz for example. Why can't it just show all the Buzz where I currently have the map set at w/o GPS info?

Also, I really want an update to Google Voice. It feels like there could be a lot more polish done there.

well i have a milestone and i am in europe and i never have to turn gps on, except the navigation thing. Works usually quite good for me. But they should indeed add a manuell "here I am" function. Besides you can always search for "[thing you want] near [Place you are]". For example you can search for:

"Restaurant near broadway 53"

You will get all the results for that area. Works right from maps.

i have started using voice much more lately and it works awesome with your location. "Call Tires Plus" or "Call Abruzzi Pizza" always calls the right/local place and haven't had an issue yet. I'm really impressed by it and by how quick it knows your location and calls the proper place if its a franchise
