If you're running CyanogenMod, I think there's a problem with it adn you're going to have to wait for the CM team to include it themselves. Also, it doesn't work with the dictionary in 2.2 so no autocomplete.

Hmm...I'm running CyanogenMod and I was able to install the gingerbread keyboard. I'm on Cyanogen 6.1.0-RC1-N1

I read some people on xda were able to do it just fine but others were having problems.

According to LG, Gingerbread requires a 1 GHz processor.

sooo... which phones would qualify? Maybe that will make it more likely to get 2.3 out there faster for non-stock phones? In the past, companies had to potentially update every phone in their lineup for 2.2... I assume there aren't that many 1 GHz phones out there? Galaxy line, Moto 2/X, G2, Incredible?

I highly doubt it's an issue, especially when can adjust the clock speed of my G2 with an app setting.
I read that the G2 is the new OC king. It can comfortably do 1.5 Ghz and there are some kernals approaching 2.0 Ghz

I've got a Droid1, stock froyo and rooted. I'm getting random reboots ~once a week. It's not a huge deal, but anyone else have this issue? I've got setCPU set to 500 min 800 max on the performance setting.

Did you install a custom kernel?

Just wanted to mention that those of you running custom ROMs looking for a lock screen capable music player, download the winamp beta off of the marketplace. It's free.

Oh well apparently the G2 is 800 MHz, so probably not true?

The 800 MHz second gen snapdragon in the G2 and Desire Z wipes the floor with the first gen 1 GHz snapdragon in the Desire and Nexus 1. It wont be an issue.

You can't compare clock speeds this way with different types of cpus. I am sure the G2/Desire Z could run Gingerbread with one arm tied behind its back.. ;)

Apparently the droid x is receiving 2.2.1 ota tonight.

My buddy got 2.2.1 on his droid 1 tonight as well. I helped him root and he went ahead and tried to install anyways, and then FREAKED OUT when it stopped responding. Ya don't do that. :D

On that note, how would we go about updating our rooted stock droids with the OTA?

Just a head's up, the Viewsonic G Tablet is pretty damn slick for the price (< $400) once you root it and get rid of the awful stock UI. It lacks the build quality of the iPad, and the screen viewing ratio is narrower than I'd like. But it's the best Android tablet I've seen so far for the price.

I know I'm going to be shit on for this and I'm not trying to start any phone wars, but should I wait for the iPhone to come out for verizon or just get the droid x. I've used my friend's droid x, and while it has a lot of better features, I just find the user interface ugly in comparison to the iphone. I don't know what to doooooooooooooo.

What are the best apps, paid or free, for controlling your PC from your phone? Any kind of control...media, whatever, doesn't matter. I'm just interested.

I like HTC's Sense UI better than stock android. If you find the ui ugly, it's worth a look.

Also, Android may be less streamlined than iOS, but it also has fewer restrictions on multitasking, codec support, application behavior, etc. It's not entirely dissimilar from the Win9x vs MacOS wars in my opinion. Although Android is far closer to parity with Apple than Windows was at the time.

Take a look at the Android UI customizations thread to see people making their Android phones less ugly, if that matters to you.

I got DX. I might jump ship after my one year contract with VZ. I like the widgets, flash, and customization of android phone. However, my experience with DX is pain:Random reboots, freezing, etc. it might not be the Android software, but Motorola's side. I miss the iPhone games and the integrated music/podcast/video player. unless PSPhone is mind blowing good.

I'll wait until iPhone for VZ is announce or other future android phones (PSPhone)

Considering that the G2 at 800mhz is more powerful than any of the other processors out there at 1Ghz (minus the MyTouch 4G, since it's essentially the same processor as the G2 but at 1Ghz stock), that wouldn't make sense even if the prerequisite did exist (which it doesn't). Besides, it's way too easy to overclock some models. I've got my G2 running at 1.2Ghz 24/7, and turn it up to 1.5 Ghz when I run certain games.

You can actually make your Android phone's homescreens look virtually identical to the iPhone OS with the LauncherPro app, the Desktop Visualizer app and an iPhone icons pack.

I'm not sure why you would want to though. I think my homescreens look much sharper than the iPhone and they have much more functionality, as well.

loving the gingerbread keyboard, i've used swiftkey, ultrakeyboard, and swype and so far I like the gingerbread one best

I managed to install the gingerbread keyboard on my HTC Hero using this file in case anybody else also had problems with it.

I only use one app, VLC Remote, for media playback. Easy to setup and works great.

Better than Swype huh; could be interesting...

That has me intrigued as well. I've used Swype on my Droid X since I bought it a few months ago. Swype on landscape keyboard on the X's 4.3" screen is godly.

Word of advice, android user interface is only as ugly or beautiful as the user wants it to be. Screw the iphone and it's boring vomit mess of apps for a ui it has.

Get the droid x and make it yours.

That's a curious point of view. I'm personally shocked that people aren't blown away by both Android and iPhone. They both rock.

Has anyone here oc'ed their droid x? I just remembered that I have set cpu purchased and was wondering what speed would be good without ruining battery life.

Generally, OCing android phones shouldn't really impact your battery life at all as the phone should be underclocking based on demand; I can't say if there's some kind of special caveat for Droid X.

Don't get me wrong, swype is cool but it never felt right to me and I found myself always needing to correct it and adding words and removing mispelled words from it's dictionary

You can't oc with set cpu. For your droid x, assuming its rooted, you want jrummy droid overclocker on the market. I have mine at ultra low voltage settings and an overclock to 1.2ghz. More speed and better battery life.

I love apples hardware, but the ui hardly blows me away. Its serviceable enough, but im sure you'd find that the interface is the last thing owners would sing praises about. Application support and cohesiveness are its greatest strength. The ui itself needs a major overhaul. Taking cues from ms and google as far as having an improved notification system and letting users make things more personal and relevant to their needs will go a long way (and im not talking about changing your battery meter to an animated pacman).

I have a question and I'm not sure this is the right thread to ask as it is only tangentially related.

I have an Android phone and my wife has an iPod. We have been downloading all of our digital copies from Bluray purchases into iTunes but now that I have an Android phone I don't want to do that since the films won't play on there. If I choose the Windows option for the digital copy will this copy play on both my Android phone and her iPod? I want to ask before I screw myself out of playback on both devices!

Or if anyone knows an Android video player that plays iTunes encrypted movies, or how to easily decrypt iTunes movies, that would be even better!

The movie I have is The Expendables. Extremely badass!

Edit: After some more searching it seems that the Windows Media Edition downloads don't play on Android phones. I'm going with the iTunes version and will start looking for a way to unlock the DRM to play these movies that I already legally own! Mark this one as one of the situations where the pirated copy works better than the legal one

Are you talking specifically about the Droid x? My stock droid 1 is usually clocked at 550mhz, but the stock kernal allows OCing to 800mhz, which I use setCPU for.

Really digging Universal Remote.

I've read somewhere about an app that lets you stream music from your computer on your phone. What app(s) let you do that?

Audiogalaxy does that for me.
Thanks.

Is it supposed to take ridiculously long for the audiogalaxy desktop software to scan your music files?

So Google has updated Youtube, Voice Search, Google Voice, Chrome to Phone and now Gmail in the past couple of days. Pretty much only Maps is left.

Gmail! Send from any address set up with your Gmail account! Nice!

Is anyone else experiencing any problems from Google Contact Sync? It seems to be syncing correctly from my Google contacts to my phone, but not back up from my phone to Google contacts. The sync indicator under my phone's settings also says something along the lines of "Sync is currently experiencing problems and will be back shortly", but I've had that message since the 7th.
