So what about paid apps I already have on my phone? Would I have to rebuy those?

I'm going through the Fission walkthrough, and the root process looks pretty intense with Terminal stuff and what not. Can I just use that easy z4root and then go right to the "Bootstrapping" step?

Its not intense at all and you don't need Terminal. Assuming your phone is up to date and not rooted - z4root to root, then snag Koush's bootstrap app from the Market to install the ROM. If you follow the directions on the Team Defuse site step by step you shouldn't have any problems.

New market is very nice, shame about the 24 hours return policy going, that was a fantastic feature.

I like the way google are doing this, rolling out upgrades to pretty much all their apps.

LOL at folks complaining about no more 24 hours. Give me a break.

Agreed: this is a bad change!!!

24 hours might be "long", but 15 minutes is too short. Say you buy a GPS navigation tool, like Sygic's Aura. On a Nexus one, it takes about 1 minute to install (it's two apps). Then, you need to download the maps, which are about 300MB if you pick up a small package (voices, framework etc need to be installed to SD).
Even on wifi-N, you will need a couple of minutes for this to complete and for you payment to clear in the meantime. This will have taken up about 10 minutes if you do it very quickly.

Then, you start the apk, need to input settings, wait for gps reception, search a destination and test whether it works accurately. I applaude those that can do that within 5 minutes. But what if something doesn't go as planned? You don't have time to adjust the settings. Because if you do, and can't get it stable, you bought it!

So people will have to rush and will return programs that whatever (small) hickup or issue, because they have to ascertain any issues within a very limited time period.

Personally, if I wasn't on the HTC Desire, but still on my old HTC Hero, this would mean that I could never return a truly fautly application anymore. I've had stuff crashing on me, causing the phone to reboot.
So I pay, verification takes about 3 minutes. I download, install (2 minutes) start the program and it crashes. (1 minute), phone has to reboot (2 minutes) and I have to wait for a resync, re-established connection (2 ~3 minutes). I could now try again, but if it fails again, I bought it: Instant uninstall / refund.

Sure, I could agree with a 12 hour evaluation. I'm not awake 24 hours anyway. Or make it 2 or 3 hours, still fine, especially with complex software. But anything below 1 hour will drive people to "test-drive" software "pirate style". Customer should be king, or they'll find another way

This sums it up well.

Not everyone is a tech savvy consumer. This is going to hurt them more then it's going to hurt us. We should not invest 20 fucking minutes reading a review about a damn app. Google fucked up and is giving the consumers the short end of the stick.

12 hours would be perfect for a refund policy. The problem with 15 minutes is that it doesn't give you a realistic time to actually test the app.

24 hours was to extreme for developers, 15 minutes is to extreme for customers.

As for the new market, I like the look of it, couldn't be any worse then the old one.

True, but that really only catches the most egregious bugs. With all the different Android hardware/OS revisions/alternate UIs out there, you're not necessarily going to find out if something will work properly with your specific configuration. Maybe it locks up once every hour on certain phones.

And that's before you even get into testing the quality of the app, whether it works for you, etc. Like the GPS example Zozz posted: even if we assume it downloaded instantly, and you had no problems, 15 minutes is still not a lot of time to get a feel for how well a navigation tool works.

I know this is going to make me a lot more hesitant to pay for an app unless it has a free version that I can give a good run-through before I buy.

12 hrs is enough to finish a game
12 hrs is also enough to try whatever app you need at the time, use it, and then return, and do the same the next day if you want to use it again.

24hrs was great, but like always, some assholes fucking things up for the rest

No it doesn't.

You can always look up reviews. And no, it doesn't take me 20 minutes to read reviews.

Google didn't fuck up, some customers did, and now everyone is paying for it.

Oh, and as for pirating, there is no excuse for it, regardless of whether it is just for demo or not, period.

Aren't you limited to one trial period/refund per app?

There's no excuse for selling a non-refundable product with (nearly) no means of demoing it either.

I'm not personally going to pirate due to this, but it's going to really turn me off from buying stuff. I've had my phone for two weeks, and both of the apps I've paid for, I probably wouldn't have under this new policy. I really can't see myself buying a game on Android anymore, either, unless it has a good free demo.

Finally gonna do 2.2 on my samsung captivate. Is cognition the rom to use or is there a better one. That's what I see via google and some forums.

edit: hmm I finally just got a Update All function on my market :lol but holy shit this locks up my phone.
its all bout 2.2.1 now. 2.2 is so slow compared to 2.2.1

15 minutes is way to short. How in the world am I supposed to tell if an app is a battery hog. This will definitely lead to more piracy. This only benefits developers, while screwing customers.

This is fucking with the average consumer. I don't give that much of a fuck about it. All it's really it's going to require me to do is do some unnecessary work but i'll live. I bought Minisquadron the other day on my gf's hero over 3G, that shit took over 10 minutes. Thing is like 25mb. Can you imagine 50mbs? and then when you run it won't work, which it didn't. I let the game download and it sat there for about 4 hours before my gf tried it and shit didn't work.

I don't want to be forced into buying an app and testing it out at that second. My argument is go suck a cock for those that agree with this bullshit. Done being caring.

Agreed.

I've had to return two separate apps because they turned out to be glitchy, broken pieces of crap. But it took me more than 15 minutes to figure that out.

When I update my Droid X via the OTA update, should I be plugged into the wall charger, or not? Or does it matter?

I tried it yesterday, and the fucking thing froze during installation and bricked. Had to take it to the Verizon store in order for them to restore to stock 2.2, but it keeps pestering me to go up to 2.2.1. I'm afraid of the same shit happening.

It was on the charger when this happened. Or was it just a fluke?

I updated mine to 2.2 and 2.2.1 while on battery power, but I don't think it makes any difference. Both times it appeared to freeze while rebooting, but it eventually booted up. Did you root and remove anything? Because that will screw up the update process. Even if you just remove Blockbuster.

Does anyone know if the Sony Ericsoon X1 will get a software update beyond its current 2.1?
Otherwise I'll have to upgrade to another phone. Would be a shame, the X1 has been amazing so far.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this Question.

I've been thinking about rooting my Incredible. Does anyone have a link?
Just rooted my Inc a few days ago, used this. Shit has gotten easier since the damn G1 days fuck that shit was a pain in the ass

Anyone use Audiogalaxy? Pretty great app, just wondering where its getting it's info for mp3 tags because it sure as hell aint using mine. They're not usually too far off, adding superfluous things like [disc 2] at the end of album names etc. For the record all of my music was ripped from CD's, so I set the tags myself before ripping them.

This was probably something Google had to concede for the developers. If it brings more and better apps, I'm all for it.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that Gameloft refuses to put most of their Android games on the market? Is there a return policy on the iPhone appstore?

As for the new market app, if it doesn't allow me to sort a category in compelling ways (such as RATING) then it's still worthless.

The app store doesn't have a return policy, and I've been burned a few times by it. There is a clear difference between reading reviews/watching videos and playing for yourself. This is especially true on android, with so many different phones with different specs.

I also don't get why the market didn't copy the app store layout. It's easy to find things and makes sense.

Is there a way, or perhaps an app, that lets my phone do the following:

I want to use my phone as a wifi "card" for my computer. I already have a wifi network, I just want to connect my computer to the phone via usb and use the wifi on the phone to connect to my home wireless network.

Basically;

Computer---USB Cord---Phone's WiFi---Wireless Router---Cable Modem---Internets

USB tethering is built into Froyo.

Settings > Wireless & networks >Tethering & portable hotspot > USB tethering.

This would just use the phone's network for internet instead of what he wants to do and use the phone as a bridge between his router and his real internet connection.

I don't think there's a way to do it. I've tried many times before but could never find a solution.

I just tried it for the first time right now and its working.

I flipped on airplane mode, connected my G2 to wi-fi, disabled wi-fi on my laptop, and then connected it to my G2.

Hmm, I don't seem to see this Tethering option at all. I'm using 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US.

PDAnet can solve that without root. The free version will work unless you're surfing sites with https (gmail, etc), then you'll have to pay.

Looks like Verizon removed the option. If you really want it, you're going to have to root your phone.

It's now rooted, and I have superuser access, but the option is still not there. Do I have to download a whole new ROM image for the phone to get this simple option?

Oh...that too.

You could try PDAnet like the other guy said. I don't know if it works though. Never tried it.

Finally put froyo on my captivate. 2.2.1. I like it. But now my stock browser is acting funking on mobile gaf when trying to type a reply :(

I guess I was expecting more from flash...seems always chopyy. But phone runs alot smoother now. Soo good.

Just noticed the Android market on my Hero has changed slightly, not the brand new one but it's refreshed a bit & can do automatic updating.

you need to download wireless tether. It's a free app and it makes your phone into a router.

No you do NOT need to download a whole new ROM image.
