I'll check it out. This music thing is the only thing I'm worried about. For some reason I feel like it's gonna be a hassle.

be warned there's no gapless playback on android. (Unless they fixed it in gb) there are some apps that try to make it work but nothing I've found that's perfect.

which rom? oxygen?

how is it? I was thinking about waiting a week or two until things get a bit more stable, but it is so tempting to just flash away now
Yeah, it's oxygen. Runs very nice and smooth and no real issues to speak of after a day of
use.

I don't watch videos on it so can't comment on whether there is any skipping issues.

so, i'm going to Prague for vacation over the holidays. Hotel has free wifi, how much would it cost to use skype to call a number in the US from there? Does it work like that? i've never used it

edit... internet is my friend, yes, yes it will as long as you set it up before you leave. 2.99 for one month of unlimited US calling.

hey guys - how does psxdroid run on an unrooted OG droid?

i'm a noob when it comes to rooting/over clocking... how dangerous is the process?

Hmm, tried to download the Gingerbread keyboard on my 2.2 Droid X and both downloads come back unsuccessful and say the content is not supported on the phone.

A bit late, but the same happened to me when I direct downloaded to the phone. I eventually installed using droidexplorer on my pc.

I'm not picky I just need something to listen to music on that wont kill the battery and t hat is serviceable enough. Is there a way to get the songs from itunes and onto the phone? I think I read something about double twist letting me do that but I'm not sure.

The stock music player will probably be fine for your needs. I've been using ISyncr to sync music from my iTunes library to my Droid X. It costs a couple bucks, but it works wonderfully. It even has a Wi-Fi syncing add-on.

What is the best MP3 tag program?

All my stuff is perfect in iTunes, but a lot of it is a jumbled mess once I move it onto my Droid X. I read that iTunes doesn't make true MP3 tags or something, and that's my problem.

What program should I use to tag all my songs so they work in iTunes AND on my Droid X?

Got the latest version of psx4droid on my EVO and it seems auto frame skip actually works now. Been playing Policenauts, Persona 2, and Xenogears and all seem to run just great :D

How far are you in xenogears. The last time I played there was a spot at the beginning where your character gets stuck in the background. It made the game unplayable, not to mention it was choppy as hell.

You could use something like Picard Tagger or Media Monkey if they are mp3s.

Tag & Rename is great.

Mac options for MP3 tagger?

Anyone else have this problem? The Android keyboard always asks me if I want to save the word "a" when I type it. It also asks me if I want to save "I," but only if the keyboard is set to "shift" or "caps lock." I realize I should just hit space, but I usually just touch the suggested word as it automatically adds a space. Still weird.

from time to time there will be a technical difficulties which will cripple your other music devices. On my DX this is what happens

I downloaded an older version, 1.13 so far nor problem

It's free. What's the problem with downloading it and finding out yourself?

Apparently it now collects all your personal data and sends it to third parties, in which case no I would not like to download it and find out for myself.

EDIT: OK after reading multiple articles, this seems kind of alarmist, and less personal info is being sent than some of those user comments on the Android Market indicated.

I agree this seems to be alarmist.

That fact is we're all consuming data for 'free' and this is actually how it gets paid for. I'm certain that Pandora does not make enough money from members to sustain or grow a business, and I'm also confident that the ads that play from time to time aren't enough either.

Honestly I don't care if my personal data is used to provide ads that keep my service free.

anyone recommend a better gallery app (and wallpaper management) than the stock one? I hate how it does not refresh until the sd card has been scanned and it usually ends up including all the cached images that other apps have downloaded.

Some cool Android tips and tricks

Last week, I sent a note to my team with some of my favorite tips and apps for Nexus S, which features Android 2.3, Gingerbread. A lot of Googlers liked it, so we thought some of you might enjoy it as well. (Note: Many of the tips are specific to Android 2.3.)

Tips

  • Visual cue for scrolling: When you are in a scrollable list (like your Gmail inbox) and you reach the end of the list it shows an orange hue—a visual cue that you can’t scroll anymore.
  • Notification bar icons (Wi-Fi, network coverage bars, etc.): Turn green when you have an uninhibited connection to Google, white when you don't. Hint: if you're in a hotel or airport using Wi-Fi, the bars won't turn green until you launch the browser and get past the captive portal.
  • Voice actions: Tell your phone what to do by pressing the microphone icon next to the search box on the home screen, or long press the magnifying glass. You can tell it to send an email or text message (“send text to mom, see you for pizza at 7”), call someone ("call mom"), navigate somewhere (“navigate to pizza”), or listen to music ("listen to Mamma Mia").
  • Find things you’ve downloaded from your browser: Your downloads are now neatly collected in a Downloads manager, which you can find in the apps drawer.
  • Turn a Gallery stack into a slideshow: In Gallery, when you are looking at a stack of photos, put two fingers on the stack and spread them. The stack spreads out and the pictures flow from one finger to the other, a moving slideshow that lets you see all of the photos.
  • Walk, don’t drive: Once you’ve gotten directions within Google Maps, click on the walking person icon to get walking directions.
  • Easy text copy/paste from a webpage: To copy/paste from a webpage, long press some text, drag the handles around to select the text you want to copy, and press somewhere in the highlighted region. To paste, simply long press a text entry box and select paste. Gmail is a bit different: you need to go to Menu > More > Select Text.
  • Turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot: Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Tethering & Portable Hotspot. (You may have to pay extra for this feature.)
  • Look at Maps in 3D: With the latest release of Google Maps, you can now look at 3D maps. Tilt the map by sliding two fingers vertically up/down the screen, and rotate it by placing two fingers on the map and sliding in a circular motion, e.g., from 12 and 6 o’clock to 3 and 9.
  • Cool shutdown effect: When you put the phone to sleep, you’ll see an animation that resembles an old cathode tube TV turning off.

Keyboard tricks

  • Shift+Key to capitalize a word: In Gingerbread (and supported hardware), you can Shift+Key to capitalize a letter instead of going to a separate all caps keyboard.
  • Auto-complete: The space bar lights up when auto-complete can finish a word.
  • Quick replace: Tap on any previously typed word, then tap on a suggestion to automatically replace it with the suggested word.
  • Easy access to special characters (like numbers, punctuation): Press and hold any key to go to the special character keyboard. You can also press and hold the "," key for an extensive punctuation keyboard.

I think for the next Android Apps thread we need to have a Tips & Tricks section for the latest OS revision.
Also, some of the fat needs to be trimmed. Andrex's OP is EPIC, but the history of Android can be easily summed up by pointing people to a Wikipage at this point.

Tips and Tricks? Anyone else remember that gaming magazine.

May be LTTP but Hero of Sparta is free today only on GameLoft's mobile site. You have to download their bookmark (you'll see it on their main mobile page) and then click the bookmark to be able to download the game.

Anyone here use Widget Locker? I love what it does, but I swear it's laggy as shit most of the time. A bunch of times it will act all glitchy right when I hit the power button, and if I pull the notifications bar down and select something, it will often freeze up for a few seconds.

Gonna disable for a few days and see what happens. One of the reasons I switched initially is that the stock Android unlock slider is kind of choppy on my Droid X. It's smooth as butter on my GF's LG Ally which doesn't make any sense.

I did use it for awhile, but uninstalled because of the same issues you've encountered.

The slider is for chumps. Real Gs on CM 6.1.1 use lockscreen gestures.

I set:

'L' for unlock
'e' for Gmail
'v' for Google Voice
'm' for Maps
'c' for camera
'p' for phone
'b' for browser
'B' for Books
'f' for Facebook
'R' for Reader
's' for Sportstap
'w' for Winamp

I use it. There is some sort of 5 second "rule" for the lock screen/home scree built into the OS. I now when I was rooted I was able to bypass this.

I think Google is missing out on much functionality from the lock screen.
You should be able to use it to display or access more information. Why can't you add widgets to it?

create a file called ".nomedia" without quotes. Place that dummy file in any folder you dont want the gallery to parse. Problem solved.

If you say the punctuation, such as "period" or "exclamation point", you'll get just that ; )

Makes voice based texting easier for us to read!

Can anyone recommend a good multiplayer game that lets you pick who you're playing with/against? A buddy and I are both anticipating a slow work day tomorrow and would like to do some mobile gaming against each other.

Curious about this as well, the only one we found so far is WordFeud.

Not too far. Just met up with the doctor.

Huh... after going up to 2.2 and downloading some apps, it seems like my phone battery is draining -quickly-.

Before with hard use, It would be dead in 10 hours. Now with next to NO use, it's dead in almost the same amount of time.

Any of these things known for draining batteries?

Winamp app
Google Maps 5.0
Going to 2.2 on a Galaxy S

I've been considering rooting, and this is giving me a little push, I know there are some roms out there that are supposed to increase battery life! :(

is it a custom flash rom or stock 2.2? I know some will drain battery quicker.

Try Cestos2. It doesn't let you pick people as far as I know but there are three lobbies, for 2 player matches, for 3 player matches and 4 player matches. 2 and 3 players have been empty and everyone chooses 4 lately so if you both pick the 2 lobby you should get a match with eachother pretty easily.

The game itself is pretty fun, a bunch of different marble games (collect stars, hit the most bumpers, don't fall in the whole). It's command based.

That 3rd mmorpg Pocket Legends (?) should allow parties.

Yeah, I've been getting that. It seemed to occur for me right when I turned the phone on. Using the Autostarts app, I disabled it from starting when the time changes and that seems to have fixed it, but I'm not sure what effect that will have on the game. I haven't tried to play it since.

I am having the same problem with it. Using a Droid 1 with LFY custom rom.

I am on the Droid 1 as well.

I realized that this game also threw a bunch of random audio clips into my music player as well... so i just said fuck it and uninstalled the thing. not worth my troubles.

I'm pretty sure Maps 5.0 is draining the battery. I didn't notice when it first updated because I was playing with different kernels. If I go into my Battery Use stats, Maps will always be at the top of the list. Once I open maps once, it starts moving up that list with the quickness.

If I force stop it, my battery percent flatlines if the screen is off, and if I'm playing with it, it takes a few minutes before it drops a percent. After I open Maps even once, the battery drains so much faster it's ridiculous. I'm noticing the same drop in battery life you're describing.

BTW, root your phone. I love playing with different ROMs and kernels. I have an HTC incredible. I updated to a better kernel and radio, and a custom ROM. My phone charges faster, I have better signal, the battery lasts much longer, and it has better performance overall. Plus there's lots of cool apps you can only with root.

Edit: Looking at comments for the app and google's forum, several people are reporting the same thing.
