Anime licenses that would work well with Western devs

Rocksteady — Darker Than Black

Why would it surely be terrible

What is it about CB that makes it untouchable by westerners that doesn't exist for GitS

To be totally fair, I think ANY CB game would turn out bad... The pacing from the show is something you can't easily emulate in game form. A lot of what made CB great too is the spectacle, another thing you can't do well in games without relying on "press X for awesome".

As for GitS? It's a show that's more aimed towards combat and the type of technological shenanigans and gun love that most western devs already do.

Red Eyes - DICE
Cowboy Bebop - Naughty Dog
20th Century Boys - Quantic Dream
Phoenix - Telltale
Ghost in the Shell - CD Projekt RED
Blood - Ninja Theory
Masked/Kamen Rider - Rocksteady
Naruto - Ubisoft
City Hunter - Rockstar
Cat's Eye - Eidos

Look at Mass Effect:

- Space setting
- Dialogue choices / Moral Decisions
- An established crew of diverse characters with their own specialties and backgrounds
- Homey space ship where the protagonist returns to after missions and where hijinks ensues
- Third-person shooter
- Very flashy at times

Not to say that this is how it should be done, but people like Mass Effect and copy/pasting this formula but with a distinctly different setting that is of Cowboy Bebop's, replacing fighting Rachni or whatever to bounty hunting or facing space pirates, and that's already a game I could see people liking.

Sony Santa Monica/God of War team should do a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure game starring Jotaro so I can oraora people and it be stupidly gross and gory.

Legend of Galactic Heroes, because japanese devs are much worse at strategy than western ones

Natsume / Mushishi - I would love to see good western dev turn it into genuine adventure game

Spice and Wolf - again, you want good economic strategy, you need european dev.

This was already done with Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and I thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

I actually want the maneuvering system to be intricate and input heavy.

could see it being similar to Spiderman swing with LT and RT , but with the addition of speeding up or slowing down the the retrieval speed.....there was an online game that tried it, but the made it far more difficult than it should be

I'd be happy if Ubisoft got to make another Naruto game. I really enjoyed Rise of a Ninja and The Broken Bond despite not particularly enjoying the source material.

Also, an Evangelion game made by either Firaxis or Ninja Theory sounds quite awesome to me.

I'm not sure that would work but I would like to see what 2K could make of Eureka 7. For whatever reason Pandora in Borderlands 2 gave me a E7 vibe that I could never explain :/

Cowboy Bebop - Naughty Dog
Sword Art Online - Obsidian Entertainment
Detective Conan - Telltale

That is all I got so far.

Edited because Telltale would make an awesome Conan game.

Totally. It's not like CB has a lot of quiet moments. Even in the episodes where they spend timing shaping Faye and Ed's backstory, there's still explosions galore.

Anyway, in that vein,

Space Dandy - Necrophone and Adult Swim games. After Jazzpunk, I think they can handle it.

They couldn't mess up the story anymore than the shows already did, so why not. At least I know 2K could do the verticality that the mechs would require.

You guys are all crazy.

The real answer is Cooking Master Boy by Naughty Dog:

I need Naughty Dog to talk in details to me about meatless Szechuan Mapo Tofu's ingredients.

Not western, but I'd love a Yakitate Japan game made from the guys that made cooking mama.

Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Gundam, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell...

Basically any anime franchise that leans more toward non-Japanese settings, doesn't have to be shackled to teenage protagonists, and incorporates lots of action. Tell Tale might be able to pull off some anime licenses with less action, but they'd suck at anything that's set in Japan.

Why not by the guy who made Cook, Serve, Delicious?

Ehehe that's a good point :P (which reminds me I should finally get around and finish Eureka 7: Astral Ocean as I want to know how all this connects to the first series) And I agree they would do well with the verticality and I'm sure they could do the world-building and make the Gecko-Go a interesting hub-location.

Or Kojima Productions.

Oh no, no no no nooo, don't put Kojima and Evangelion together! D: The resulting story would cause all players a new mental illness that melts brains... Plot Twist:
Chico = Shinji and everything that ever happened in the MGS universe was actually just a mental anomaly caused by diving too deep into a Evangelion/Angel

I don't think that Evangelion has enough source material across all of its iterations to meet KP's required cutscene/exposition allotment.

It doesn't have to follow the original anime, it can be a spinoff.

That's why I want KP to make an Eva game. Kojima would twist it and fuck it up even more than Anno.

Edit: Also I know KP isn't western, but I mentioned it anyway because it sounds awesome to me.

If anything, western games can have spectacle.

Are there really no developers who've made games with decent pacing, western or otherwise? Or ones with competent action beyond "press a for awesome"?

CB's hand-to-hand group fighting could be done justice by Rocksteady as their work on the Batman games show. They've made a good FPS with Urban Chaos and they could have decent shooting that could be paired well with the fighting.

That's just going by what they've already done and doesn't consider that they could develop a good CB game entirely different fron their past games. Same goes for plenty of other devs. None of the criteria you listed sounds like anything that's impossible for existing western devs, let alone devs from around the world.

That said, I really liked the Naruto games that Ubisoft made early in this generation. A large world to explore, and non-traditional fighting mechanics (special moves done by holding a trigger and doing inputs on both analog sticks to match hand movements) were all good ideas.
Absolutely, so much more appealing than the stuff put out these days. I think they did a really good job with the license and those two games are some of my fav on the 360.

Well when you put it that way I want to see it happen just out of sheer curiosity... My edit in the last post probably isn't even 1/100th as crazy as these two would get :P

Also seeing your avatar is there any dev on this planet that could manage to handle TTGL? I think not even four Titan Z's in Quad-SLI could handle the true scale if you know what I mean...

I was Thinking about the Just Cause 2 people.

I just felt that Rocksteady would nail the traversal mechanics with the 3d gear, as they did a very good job with the Arkham games. And they've shown they're more than capable of adapting comic material to present a good story.
