Anime licenses that would work well with Western devs

Kill la Kill by Gearbox (borderlands)

just to see such stalwart warriors of social justice such as Anthony Bursch tackle that one.

And that's a bad thing? If the adaptation is exactly like the source material it becomes pointless. The whole point of adaptation is to offer fresh pespective on beloved material.

Also..in some cases even pure westernization could work wonders.Currently too much of anime is filled with absolutely shitty fanservice and moe nonsense all of those would be cut out in western adaptaion.
The unique qualities of an ip like an anime lies in it's expression rather than plot/story. If western studios just want to borrow stories, I don't see the point of doing it as an "adaption"(outside of marketing). They could just copy and change things they'd change anyway and still be in the clear of copyright laws. What is the point of using the ip if you are completely changing it anyway?

It's one of the reasons I hate the idea of an Akira movie set in New York. It dilutes and ruins the original vision while constraining the adaption needlessly. Just make a 20 years later sequel to Chronicle instead, I'm positive that if the production was put in the same able hands the latter would result in a much better film.

It's probably set in New York because they didn't want to use Asian actors.

That's the point though, they are probably not going to want to use a lot of other things as well. The expression of the work is completely changed but the adaption still has to cater to it. It's a lose lose situation. I propose an original story based on or inspired by the ip as always being a better choice creatively.

If the underlying story is unique and culturally significant enough(like Shakespeare adaptions), it might work, in most cases though removing the expression removes the point of using it as an ip.

So I'm not against western studios borrowing or stealing to make their own take on the work, I just don't see the point of using it as a license/ip(outside of marketing). It wouldn't do any good.

Ubisoft using the UbiArt engine to make a cartoony 2D Lupin III stealth-platformer could turn out pretty cool.
Oh hell no, that's assuming you could have someone like Ancel leading the project, and even that wouldn't work out. If there were some good Italian developers up to the challenge, though, a point-and-click adventure adaptation would already be in the making.

Get sum people from EA Sports to do a proper Ashita no Joe or Hajime no Ippo boxing game with an adventure game structure, please. Of course, I'd rather have some folks like 8ing do it, but that's not what this thread's for.

Speaking of Lupin, there's also Space Adventure Cobra, which has already gotten a couple of games way back for the PC Engine. Maybe Volition could do that wacky stuff justice?

I have a feeling, should Telltale ever want to work with anime properties, that Maison Ikkoku is deserving a really good season. It'd do damn well thanks to the Rumiko Takahashi factor. Alternatively, someone like Daedalic ought to adapt Royal Space Force into an adventure game loosely based around the central plot. Please avoid minigame stuff, though!

I've always thought Dominion Tank Police could turn into something really cool with the right dev, maybe some Criterion guys or something.

Not in any way relevant in 2014, but I'd sure play it.

Ubisoft did a good job when they had the license for 2 Naruto games. The combat in the second game was much better than what cyber connect has done until now.

Not just FMA, I think the only good anime games I've played were all published by NamcoBandai and even then, those tended to be hit or miss with me.

The CC2 guys in particular, set a higher standard with their Naruto and .Hack games.

Yeah, those were just the first two that jumped to mind
because I played and beat both of them.

They were awful, but by no means the worst of the bunch. That title belongs to stuff like Orphan: Scion of Sorcery and the PS2 Inuyasha games.

None. Seriously, not a single damn license they wouldn't fuck up.

To be completely honest, I'll have to agree.

It's not even about fucking it up, actually. I do think they could make some really good games, just not the kind of game I have in mind when I imagine how a game of X anime would be like.

EDIT:

Cowboy Bebop - Naughty Dog

You know what? That could actually be pretty damn cool.

NOT. A WESTERN. DEVELOPER!

I like Platinum a lot too, but they are from Japan!

lol, if this is now a YOUR DREAM ANIME GAME, then let me just say that I'd love Capcom to make a non canon JoJo Character Action game. You play as a female protagonist and have the ability to absorb stands. Neutral d-pad = hamon, and each direction on the d-pad will switch stands in real time, like Dante does in DMC4.

She even does Dio's signature pose while THE WORLD is attacking.

Give it to Neo_G to direct.

Game of the Year.

Outlaw Star has some real possibilities if properly used.

Harlem Beat could be pretty cool also, but I'm afraid they'd just make it into a crappy sports title without including anything else that made it enjoyable.

Hellsing would make a fantastic action/shooter game. Something like Dirge of Cerberus meets Bayonetta meets Dark Souls.

This..actually makes sense. SoulTaker is another one that would work with this sort of concept, although it would need a name change to prevent a pellagra epidemic.

This might have made sense two decades ago, but today? You've got plenty of anime that is directly inspired by western forms of expression. Plus it's not like you couldn't work with original creators to keep it faithful anyway.

Did Ghibli's Howls' Moving Castle turn out bad? Nope, it ended pretty damn great.

Of course, you do need great team to pull it off, anime's terrible versions american IP are best example of that. But I do think it can be done.

I feel like I'm playing The Laughing Man in Watch_Dogs, so I would say Ghost in the Shell (by either Ubi Montreal or the Deus Ex team).

I would love to see someone tackle The Big O, but I'm stumped on which Western Video Game Developer would tackle the project without it going wayside.

Well when you put it that way I want to see it happen just out of sheer curiosity... My edit in the last post probably isn't even 1/100th as crazy as these two would get :P

Also seeing your avatar is there any dev on this planet that could manage to handle TTGL? I think not even four Titan Z's in Quad-SLI could handle the true scale if you know what I mean...

Sorry for the late reply, and yeah I know what you mean.

It would take even more if it was Lagann-hen...

All You Need is Kill
COD:AW or Crysis 2 Mechanics wise ......will/already have you covered.

I would just love to see Gen Urobuchi write for a Triple A title.
Really he is all you need. Get any good dev team and have him do the story and don't string him out to three games to have him do what he can do in one. Madoka Magica fans will understand what I mean. He was held back the first two Madoka flims.... I swear he was.

Bad things happen when western hands touch macross ....and unfortunately because of Harmony Gold...they turn into robotech

not that many good things have happened when eastern developers have worked with it...but at least they stay true to the design concepts ( i havent been able to play the aces or F game since im a pc gamer)

Heres something for a macross game enviroment ive been working on for fun in unreal engine

Rockstar - Cowboy Bebop and Baccano!

Harmonix/Ubisoft SF - Mongolian Chop Squad/BECK (Rocksmith/Rockband with a story about learning guitar and starting up a band)

Bioware - Ghost in the Shell

Insert Arcade Racing Game Dev - Initial D

Sony Santa Monica - Deadman Wonderland

Naughty Dog - Black Lagoon and Trigun

Sucker Punch - Darker Than Black

Firaxis - Hetalia

Insomniac(?) or an indie dev capable of going nuts with animation - FLCL

Remedy - Speed Grapher

Maxis - Waifu Anime and stuff

Afro Samurai - Rocksteady (they proven to do a good job with an established character and franchise, plus their combat formula was good evidence they can make very basic combat fun)
Mobile Suit Gundam (insert series here) - MachineGames (i liked what they did with Wolfenstien The New Order, so i'd be interesting to see what they'd do with this IP given the plotlines and mechs)
