Anonymous source tells Random Blog: Shenmue HD is real, finished for over a year

I'm not forcing you to play the game in English. I said I don't care what other languages they add long as they add in the OG English Dub. Don't get upset because it's partially why I enjoy the game.

Nah dude I'm not upset or anything (I'm not THAT nerdy) I was just amazed that you really prefer the inferior sub just for laughs. Of course I don't have a problem with an optional english sub just thought for a second you wanna have english only.

They broke the news that the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 had an HD texture install on the second disc and that Ubisoft were introducing their own online pass system.

Not a bad record.

Oh so they ARE reliable? Nice.

So, what does this do to the value of Shemnue 1&2 DC? Is ebay going to be flooded with them, or are they worth holding onto?

I have a sealed version of Shenmue 2 Xbox that is currently going for $70 on ebay. I suppose that might lose value as well.

The only version that will hold its value is the euro version Of 2 on DC.

If this is true I hope they will fix one texture: Ryo's jacket!

It looked horrid even ten years ago!

So it looks like I might now get to play shenmue with english voice actors after playing the DC Japanese versions.

Is the Japanese version with the soundtrack CD worth anything?

It's just something I kind of grew up on. I grew up with an uncle who liked all kinds of action movies including martial art movies(he was huge on these) and a lot of them only had english dubs and while they were really good movies like drunken master, the dub were so hilarious we would pretty much find ourselves laughing till the next action scene happens.

That's pretty much what Shenmue reminds me of just in video game form.

Don't get me wrong, I'd definitely play it in any other language with english subtitles like I have with Shenmue 2, but I still at least want that original dub to play in as well.

NEVER THE END

Then I hope your your sake that they'll include the english sub as well.

Feck Shenmue II if it doesn't have the Japanese voice acting.

I'll doubt they change anything. Imho the first will keep the english sub and the second will be in japanese with subtitles. We'll see.

I wouldn't bank on it. Sega is notorious for having lost or intentionally destroyed old data like that.

I think they improved somewhat post Saturn. If there's enough there to release a genuine HD port of Shenmue as opposed to emulation, they may still have access to the masters.

People still big on the lie that is "Japanese voice acting in Shenmue was superior", I see.

It was as terrible as the English. Worse, even.

Yes but, unless you know Japanese, you won't be able to notice. That's why I'd love to have the Japanese dub in both games.

I contacted German Sega PR:
GSPR said:
Shenmue, Shenmue. SEGA-Insider! Herrlich!

In the end it seems that someone misinterpreted a statement from someone at Sega.

This is why I want it. I think Shenmue II was a better experience than the first and the Japanese voice acting, and my complete inability to tell how bad it was, had a lot to do with it.

You can notice poor acting across languages, even if your knowledge of the language is poor. English critics wouldn't be able to judge French films, else.

Just read that
through the Shenmue Dojo post on my Facebook feed.

I'm not sure my poor heart can handle these news. I seriously had a strange reaction to reading it.

----

I don't think the Japanese dub is particularly good, but come on, it's definitely NOT as bad as the English one.

I don't believe the reason for not releasing them if they're done. Surely if they were it would make more sense to release both I and II HD, see what response they get, and if they generate a lot of interest and sell well, decide on whether or not to make III.

Great, so it'll end up being a test game! That'll end well for everyone :/

Still, a lot of other Dreamcast games have been leaked (and in the case of JSR, announced), so I'd buy Shenmue HD to see the source of all the love lavished upon the game postmortem.

Can't see a third sequel happening though; it's just one of those things, y'know? But if it did happen, it would be the tastiest crow I've ever eaten.

How do you count the BF3 story when the game's producer told them about it? It wasn't an inside source with no name.

Seriously? Sega is holding them to see if Shenmue III will ever happen.....Don't believe this story at all.

The Japanese voice acting might not be much better, but there are plenty of phrases which sound natural in Japanese but which have been translated to something that sticks out in English. 'I see' comes to mind - we don't say it as much in everyday conversation as the Japanese use the original phrase.

Yup. The way random dialogue works and everything makes the Japanese dub work better.

I'll get this probably.. but I watched the Giant Bomb guys play this recently, and wow has this aged horribly. Watching him drink a soda from the vending machine for 2 minutes.. lol.

When it comes to dubbing, I can't notice poor acting in Japanese.
Japanese sound almost like gibberish to me. :p

We are dealing with voice acting here. It's far easier to judge acting when we can look at a full performance. We forgive video game acting from a body stand point because we understand the limits of animation. But it's still hard to judge the vocal side because we don't know exactly what they saying so we don't know what feels like a natural inflection or whatever else.

I could still tell dull line readings in Shenmue II but not understanding Japanese i couldn't quite tell why it was bad and so I can ignore it to a far greater extent than the English version.

I've heard this from a source who is rarely if ever wrong about anything Sega and he said that everything but the waiting on Shenmue III nonsense is true, even the been done for a year bit.

Makes no sense that they wait this long, but whatever, the fifteen shenmue fans out there will be happy.

Hmm...so this rumor is supposedly going by that a Westerner knows something about another Westerner...

Guess who does ports and is from the West...

Backbone.

Cringe.

Seriously though, if this has already been done for a year, what are the chances it's quality ports with 1080p and possibly updated textures, no graphical/audio glitches, surround audio, English AND Japanese voices, locked framerate, all effects (fog, etc) intact, with all Shenmue Passport bonuses included, etc?

Sounds more like some kind of outsourced rush port has been done, if the rumor is to be believed.

Oh yeah and of course as said, the funniest part of the rumor is the "we're waiting for Shenmue 3 first" part. Um, how about releasing these to drum up interest for Shenmue 3 and then start development on that once these take off (with proper marketing, not just dropping them on the Store like SEGA Bass Fishing/Space Channel 5 pt2).

Get SEGA AM2 on this or something.
This deserves top notch effort.

If the rumour is true, I wouldn't be surprised if they do it more for regaining some corporate following than for making big money (which they might not make). I mean, wouldn't Sega look like the coolest company in the world if they gave their most long-term fans what they have been requesting for 12 years? Some recent Sega moves, like promoting Nagoshi, caring a bit more and playing with nostalgia in recent Sonic games or the JSR remake seem like steps going into that direction (of regaining their old fans).

That would also give some logic to why they might be holding the first games. They wouldn't get the image boost they might be seeking if they release only the first 2 games and abandon people again, so it makes sense for them to have a clear strategy before releasing anything. And maybe they are thinking (rightly IMO) that sales of the remakes would be much higher if there's a firm promise of conclusion.

On the other hand, if the rumour is 100% true I wouldn't be too optimistic of improvements in the game. Having such big games ready in such an apparent short time sounds like emulation or low-quality port, like the first ports made years ago of Dreamcast releases and not the newest JSR one.

Exactly.
For all I know, this could be either the worst or the best acting ever. If some Japanese guy told me it's the best acting ever, I'd believe him.

I'm afraid that the English dub is going to ruin the experience for most of the newcomers.

Some modders were able to hack Ryo's passport model into the actual game (though it made it really buggy). So hopefully they were able to use the high quality textures/models in this potential port.

i will of course buy as many copies as i can to support future opportunities for the series.
and i hope that all hardcore fans do the same.
i know this alone is not enough but it will definitively help with the current situation if we can hope for newcomers as well.

This was leaked a year ago right when Jet Set Raido was also leaked via PartnerNet.

Yeah. It makes more sense to actually possibly be real when considering this. "About a year ago" JSR was leaked and it turned out to be true and just recently announced. A few months after the official JSR announce, we're hearing rumors of Shenmue 1/2 HD.

*Passport model pics*

Oh God yes. Totally forgot about this, but really is kind of mandatory at this point.

Thinking about the whole one year thing though... I will refrain from saying anything I may regret down the road, but yeah, it doesn't bode well for the port being done by anyone beside... Backbone.

I hope we aren't jinxing it.
Even if not Backbone, a rush job port with no technical improvements and audio/graphical glitches and no Passport content makes too much sense unfortunately.

Hope we're wrong.

They know nothing and of course they won't confirm this because I think that Shenmue HD is big enough to overshadow JSR HD.

If each Gaffer buys at least a thousand copies each of Shenmue HD and Shenmue 2 HD, it should be enough for Sega to greenlight Shenmue 3!!
