Anonymous source tells Random Blog: Shenmue HD is real, finished for over a year

Why do they do this to us, just release the game already I guarantee the game will sell more than some of the games Sega has been releasing lately.

Stop playing with my emotions :(

Shenmue I and II HD I can handle, but I already gave up on III a long time ago. Yet, given my reaction everytime I see it mentioned, it looks like I'm still secretly hoping for it...

Man, isn't that the truth...What a tremendous game that could be...You would think that they would make it already, it's an established IP, and would move units off of hype alone...Sadly the gameplay mechanics were not enjoyed by the masses.

You know it would work very well on IOS, on an IPAD it would be tremendous...Just sayin'

Actually, I take back that IPAD part, I forgot the heavy use of the analog triggers...

What I meant to say is that game would be perfect on Vita ; )

Shenmue 3 is probably going to be a centerpiece launch title for the next Xbox

Some of you seem to have a small misconception how popular Shenmue really is. Outside of gaming forums there isn't a very high demand for a third. It will be a financial fiasco like the other two. I'd love to see it one day but for once I totally understand Sega for not taking the risk.

which makes sense to use sales of these digital re-releases to gauge interest and market potential for the IP. I totally understand why Sega would sit on these until they made a decision regarding shenmue 3. They realize a third game would likely be a big investment so they probably waited to decide whether or not they were willing to go forward with the commitment if shenmue HD sold well.

No sense in raising hope if they don't plan to develop shenmue 3.

After the Jet Set Radio HD announcement I pretty much considered Shenmue HD a given eventually. It might actually be a good thing it took this long, because they seem to be putting in more effort now, and they might actually improve the game like JSR HD.

How can they screw this one up, too? Is there licensed music or any trademarks in the game that they might fail to renew? (See Crazy Taxi, JSR)

How is this rumor any more credible than something I'd make up? I need to make my own blog with outlandish rumors.

There was a screen last year from Partnernet showing Project Barkley 2. Sega have confirmed it's on of thier most requested games. Jet Set Radio was recently announced.

The rumor has merit.

DD only and not Shenmue 1 + Shenmue 2 HD collection on discs = fail fail fail.

But will buy for sure since it's the game of forever.

Is it possible to purchase a digital copy twice because THAT's HOW BAD I want to support this.
i will do the same if possible!
also buying it on every platform 360,PS3 or possibly STEAM!!
this is a great chance to show support after all the pain we endure through all these years.

actually fans should prepare a big campaign to support this move and spread the word to everyone!!

I should point out that when I said this earlier in the thread....

I don't believe this. And I believe everything.

I meant that I don't believe Shenmue HD has been sitting ready for a year and that Sega were waiting to decide the future of the series before going ahead with its release. I do believe that Sega will release Shenmue HD, hopefully this year for PSN and XBLA.

Sega sent the DC collection of cheaply ported PC titles into the market to see if there were still people willing to buy things based on Dreamcast nostalgia. We were. So now they are going ahead with the proper Dreamcast HD ports like Jet Set Radio and that PR guy mentioned Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue as the 2 most requested titles for the future. But I don't believe the decision to port Shenmue would have been made until the Dreamcast collection sales figures were known. Certainly not sitting finished for over a year.

Now, if they could hack in the Shenmue Passport models into the HD re-release I think I'd faint.

I have heard things to suggest that this is not true. I write for a site that received different rumors - rumors that still mentioned Shenmue, mind you - but that it was only being "considered". We've had good luck with this source in the past, and considering he mentioned Jet Set Radio as one of the first games to be in the next wave of XBLA/PSN Dreamcast releases, I'm inclined to believe him.

I don't even know why anybody would want Shenmue 1 and 2 - it's not going to lead to Shenmue 3, meaning the best case scenario is:

  1. Everybody gets to see "what's so amazing about Shenmue" and finds a dated, clunky detective game with little action.
  2. Those who "get" Shenmue are left with the biggest case of blue balls in history.

It's best to leave Shenmue six feet under. Reminding people that it exists is not going to solve anything.

There's no category for people who just want to have the best possible version of a game they enjoy? I'd pick this up for PC and I'd be able to play it indefinitely into the future without having to worry about hardware failure or changing video standards.

Well, that's definitely commendable, but it's also a tremendously small market.

Yeah, but your original post wasn't commenting on the financial responsibility for the company to make a product that sells. You wondered why anyone would want it.
