Another World Releasing on PS4 Next Week

This game is a must play for anyone that hasn't experienced it. It was such an eye-opening experience back then. It's still one of the finest examples of a cinematic game. May still be the best.

There is no missing component, Eric Chahi wasn't involved with HotA. :P But yeah, it would be a neat bonus.

According to this french interveiw he had moderate involvement in Heart of the the Alien. But yeah probabaly not a lot.

Chahi also didn't work on Flashback, so no.

yeah I wouldnt really call it a spiritual successor, but they both have a simliar vibe, great animation, simliar mechanics, and in the sc-fi genre. I feel FlashBack has a more Prince of Persia angle as well.

Have you played Flashback ? It plays almost the same, looks almost the same, is also made by Delphine, the world looks almost the same and the story is very similar, plus it has the same ending screen :)

Never played this, and I remember being fascinated by this in issues of EGM circa ~1992.

So ya know... That's quite a hype cycle.

No video? Was this one of those old rotoscoped games? I remember playing some of those on the Genny back in the day. PEACE.

Of course I played Flashback. I played it on my uncle's Amiga. Still since the next game made by Chahi was Heart of Darkness that is my spiritual sequel.

He had an idea for the sequel but they didn't go with it and in the end he wasn#t involved with the sequel:

Interplay insisted in making the sequel in order to make the most of the CD-ROM medium's capabilities. After discussion, I agreed. Rather than making a chronological development related to the first story, I decided that redesigning the game from the alien point of view was excellent, and would make the player discover Another World with other eyes. I could already picture scenes where Lester would be in the background fighting guards, while the player would control the alien in the foreground and then join our first hero, help him, etc... The concept was good but, alas, neither the animations nor the game, entirely developed by Interplay, were up to the job. It was a flop.

That's the game I remember playing. Flashback was awesome. One of the first games I ever solo'd on the Genny. PEACE.

Well looks like the PS4 is getting Another World. Comes out June 25th and runs at a resolution of 2560Ă—1600. Should look crisp as hell I guess. The Sega-CD Soundtrack is an option. It also is cross buy and has cross platform trophies as well as cross save.

Just 2560x1600? It could easily run in 1000000p with 1000 fps.

Somehow odd choice not taking 4K resolution.

I already own this in so many ways, though. I even still have my Out of this World SNES cart!

Oh well, time to pony up again. Vita means life.

I loved the original on Amiga. I'm curious how it will hold up after so many years but i feel like i have to buy this in any case.

it seems that they did use this idea a bit though

but probabaly not to the extent he imagined it. Its a pretty short sequence.

So GAF, you're saying that I should play this for the first time on my Wii U next week?

I think a lot of the games appeal is heavily based in nostalgia, as I don't think it's aged terribly well from a gameplay standpoint. It was cool because it did things not many games did before it, but it would be disingenuous to suggest it hasn't been topped since. As a piece of gaming history, it's a nice game to have in your collection, but there's a good chance new gamers won't "get it."

How is this release different from the 20th Anniversary version that came out a couple years ago? Or is it just a console port of that remastered version?

It's available on Xbox 360 as part of the Ubisoft remake. Just select "1993 edition" at the main screen. It's not Amiga-worthy, but it's good enough.

Is that in the PC version too? I might actually buy that piece of junk in that case.

I think it's pretty much that version. Did that also have the Sega CD soundtrack? I played a bit of the iOS version but didn't stick with it because of the controls.

Everyone should play this game.

It's a story-driven platformer with puzzles that operate on a lot of player trial and error. You will die and make mistakes in this game a lot, but that's what makes it fun.

Sounds great. I'll be eager to pick it up on Wii U. Is it decently lengthy?

This is one of those ultra-popular games that have been ported all over the place yet I've never played. Will get it on Wii U.

Seems identical to me. They're both the same as the 15th Anniversary Edition too, they just keep rebranding it every 5 years. Which is fine by me, I hope it sells forever and is ported to every system known to man.

I have the steam release. I don't remember if the soundtracks are in there or not.

I never got very far in the Amiga version. The whole shield/shooting gun mechanic was really weird.

Martial: Since the original version, the re-editions have introduced a number of nice additions, like 256 colors backgrounds, up to 720p resolutions, more checkpoints and remastered sound effects. This version now delivers a full HD experience. The game is rendered at a higher than displayed resolution to enable clean anti-aliased polygon edges. On PS4 thatÂ’s a whopping 2560Ă—1600 pixels! The backgrounds have been edited by Eric to a higher resolution and are now displayed in full color. The result is a noise-free, crisper, and more vibrant environment.

Fuck. Yes. I don't have to use thes awful mobile controls anymore.

EDIT oh my Jesus they've added the genesis and sega cd soundtrack options. I'm literally busting here.

FLASHBACK NOW PLEASE (willfully disregarding the apocryphal version that was included in the "remake"). Pull your shit together, Cuisset - Chahi treats his series properly.

Heart of the Alien anyone?

Non Chahi, isn't recognized as a true sequel.

Lol I feel the same way. People get frustrated with this games iterations but it's such a landmark game that's influence is still pulsing through the industry, that everyone should be able to play it.

Yeah but you play it on an old arcade machine with a scrunched up small screen that doesnt even give you the option to go full. The icing on the fuck you cake that was that shitfest remake.

I'll get Another World next week, but christ was that game tough for me as a kid. I remember saving up all of my money I made at our neighborhood yard sale when I was 11 to go buy the Genesis version. It kicked my ass and I believe I made it a little past the point where you're rolling around those vents avoiding steam. Loved every minute though.

I don't get how can they say that will release next week and don't say the price or even the platforms...

The JPEG compression doesn't help but if those are PS4 shots I'm not impressed by the supersampling. With that particular retro-vector style it might actually look better native 1080p with no AA.

Agreed. I was privileged to be in the front row when Chahi did his postmortem at GDC some years back; his talk was incredibly inspiring and culminated in a standing ovation from the packed crowd (myself included of course!) that he was so humbled and taken aback by. Amazing guy, landmark achievement.

Man, there's only so many times I can play this game. It's great but I must have owned it 10 times over and beaten it double that amount.

Is this the first time downsampling has been used on a console game?
The Lego games on PS4 and Child of Light PS4/XBO do so to different degrees.

edit: I have a faint memory of Area 51 on PS2 supersampling but I can't find any proof atm.

Amazing game. Absolutely blew me away back in the early 90s.

An original graphics mode, 5x integer upscale would be nice as an option.

Oh man! This came out of nowhere. I'm so happy. This was one of my favorite games on the Amiga. I would always showcase this game when my friends came over and they loved the rotoscoped tech in the this game. I especially recall the lightning strike on the building and how smooth it looked enveloping the side of the building.

I played this at the time on the Amiga and then an ios port a few years ago.

To any young ones here, get it! It's really one of a kind. Everything is scripted, but it works brilliantly.
