1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I have definitely considered it, but being 39 years old it is a bit intimidating to just jump into. I really really wish that I could have had opportunities to learn Programming and Coding as a kid, but those opportunities didn't exactly exist. However, the chances I missed out on as a younger man, I am trying to create for my students. As a 6th Grade Computer Teacher, I have now created a class called Programming Pride. I have 30 6th Graders, whom, for 40 minutes a day, 5 days a week, get to work on programming and coding. After 8 weeks, I get 30 new 6th Graders. So far this year, I have helped teach 60 6th grade students how to program and code using Scratch, AppInventor, Tynker, Code Combat, Blockly, Game Maker etc. I may never be a game developer, but I am trying to introduce my students to programming and coding so they can be.
2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
I have been teaching at my school for 12 years. I like having this permanent employment. Not only do I get to know my coworkers much better over time, but I feel that the more time I can spend with people, the more it helps us build that community within the workplace. Plus, I live in my school's district, my students go to my corporation, and I always see my little 6th graders, many all grown up now, waiting on me, working at my favorite stores. It is a unique and pretty cool experience for me and my job. Moving away from that for a new job opportunity or for new scenery, would be tough.
3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
I would rather work in a small indie studio. I feel that it would be far easier to take risks without huge budgets and sales goals to meet. Sure, even independent developers have their own budgets and goals, it just seems to me like the big budget AAA studios have much more to lose by taking risks.
4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
I cannot stay focused on one job, one project, for long periods of time. My creativity and imagination wonders quite frequently. When I am teaching a subject at school, I am sometimes so excited to work on what we are doing next, that maybe I don't maintain my focus on what we are working on now. I would prefer working on several projects.
5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
I dont know if I would have a specific preference. I would just want to work at a very open, inclusive community. People from different backgrounds, different experiences. I am not asking for a laid back lax workplace. I need to be driven, and pushed. I would simply prefer a company that has the door open to all people, so I could learn from their experiences and expertise, and they from mine. As a lifelong learner, I have found that the experiences and backgrounds of others, can be one of life's greatest teaching tools.
