Anyone else buy a PS3 just to watch movies?

I really don't see how people on a game forum can have no interest in PS3 games when they have the system.

I have TWICE the number of blu-ray movies as I do games!

Casino Royale and Dreamgirls....vs....Resistance(which i've barely played)

And the four HP Blu Ray movies are on the way.

I might get Uncharted later this month for my birthday since I got a sony promo booklet in the mail with a $10 off any PS3 game coupon for Best Buy.

I never got that many DVDs during the PS2 era, as someone else mentioned...but now with an HDTV and PS3, i'm looking forward to building up a Blu-Ray collection.

Overall, I don't have much spendy-spendy money, and $60 games are not my cup of tea considering that, and the fact that my hardcore gaming days seem to be behind me :(

I got my PS3 just to watch Blu-Ray movies. I tried out a few of the game demos and really like them. Only problem is I don`t like the controller. I am going to try the new Nyko Zero and see if it is better if not I don`t think I will be gaming on the PS3.
I'm with you there.. I hate dual shock analog stick placement.

I didn't read my own avatar and now everyone knows I'm not too bright. :(
im trying to get one for mostly a BR movie player.

reason being, ive check the stand alone BR players and they all suck ass. Ether they have no ethernet port for firmware updates or you just cant upgrade them at all.

and just like standard DVD players.......theres some shitty BR players.

Blu-Ray + Ethernet Port + WiFi = winner

I missed out on most ps2 games. And for every new ps3 game i could buy, i can get 5-6 good ps2 games on ebay instead

Times change...i've been on this forum for almost 10 years, and at that time, I prided myself on always having the major systems each gen(hence my name "OMNIgamer"). I didn't, and still don't, care about platform exclusivity, i play games not systems...but unfortunately shortly after the start of the PS2/GC/XB gen, I was unemployed and completely broke for most of it...I still got all three systems(eventually), but barely got any games, barely played, and in some ways the times have gotten ahead of me and i find myself not all that willing to try to get back into it. I'm not big on FPS games, and I've yet to play a single online game(despite now having the capability to)

The PS3 is a hellavuh versatile system...i've gotten plenty of enjoyment out of its other multimedia funtions...for instance it plays back HD/High Bitrate videos much better than my relatively underpowered computer(plus i'm on an old 17" 4:3 CRT monitor, so it's much better seeing HD videos on my 32" 16:9 HDTV). Streaming videos/music/photos with TVersity is awesome, as is all of the PS3/PSP connectivity as well.

And for me, $60 games are a huge barrier.

In summary, people are free to enjoy their PS3 as they see fit.

I see your point and its completely valid but you still seem to have some interest in games but have other circumstances barring you from experiencing. My point was I don't see how one who has already paid the up front cost of the system can sit there and say that the PS3 is there Blu-Ray player and they will never buy a game for it.

Before the PS3 came out, a lot of people prophesied that the PS3 would take off similar to the PS2 because of Blu-Ray on the PS3 a la DVD on PS2.

Well here I am, owner of a PS3 with 30 Blu-Ray movies and not a single PS3 videogame.

So I'm asking, any others on here with a PS3 and not a single game for it?

How can you have an account at GAF and have no interest in any PS3 games? Doesn't make sense. You could at least buy Super Stardust.

I did, but I have played Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Resistance on it. Beat Resistance. Super Stardust HD had me for a few weeks too. Beyond that, it has been a Blu-Ray player.

Yeah that's true...if i had more money i'd certainly love to get and play more PS3 games...though i'm sure there are some cases like mine where the person has completely fallen out of contemporary gaming, and maybe got a PS3 to act as a media center, old school PS/PS2 game upscaler, DVD upscaler, and BluRay player.

drohne

hyperbolically metafictive
circa launch i was more excited about blu ray than ps3 games, but resistance really surprised me, and i like ps3's overall lineup more than most. movies and games amicably coexist on my ps3.

it's kind of amusing when gafers boast about using their ps3s for bds alone -- or when they avow their preference for inferior standalone players. you'd expect game forum posters to like videogames, but i guess console loyalty is serious business

I didn't intend on using mine for movies when I first bought it, but over the past few months I'd say it's been more like 90% movies 10% gaming. I've bought 6 Blu-ray movies and 0 games for it since November.

ur biased.

Well, even though your own painful brand of comedy failed yet another time, your post is still close to the truth.

If you only buy BD movies for your PS3, you are either:

- A serious home theater enthusiast who bought the PS3 because it's a cheap Blu-ray player.
- A Nintendrone/Xbot.

It's as simple as that.

A guy I work with pretty much did. He bought a 40Gb to play Blu-Ray movies. He has bought a couple games but he really isn't into it.

I'm sure his kids will be into it though.

I got it primarily for games and never really took Blu ray movies into account when it launched. Although, after checking out some high quality Blu ray transfers and seeing the nearly constant Amazon deals, I've become just as interested in picking up my favorite movies for it.

You should try out some PSN games such as SSHD and Everyday Shooter.

I bought it for both. I have around 30 Blu-ray movies and 0 PS3 games. 360 takes care of my gaming needs, I get the occasional PS3 title here and there from Gamefly.

Its the Bluray capability that's tempting me towards the PS3 the most. Its current exclusives don't really do it for me, so it has little to offer me on the gaming side as a "Wii60" owner.

I might...so far i've only bought Castlevania: SOTN, Crash Bandicoot, and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD. Btw, I didn't mean that I personally have completely fallen out of contemporary gaming, just that there could be cases where one has and uses a PS3 for those other uses. But as a gamer i've been pretty bad this gen...I mean, I have several demos downloaded and installed...they're right there...waiting...and i've barely touched them if at all(Burnout Paradise, The Simpsons, Uncharted, Ratchet&Clank, Skate, Sega Rally...I mean WTF? And I even said i was going to play them this weekend but got caught up in that MediaMan program from the HD movie thread and have been scanning in my collections). The last demo I think I actually played was The Darkness :(

25 movies and 3 games... I guess that puts me firmly in the "yes , yes I did buy a ps3 to watch movies" catagory. I got a 360 to play nexgen games, a wii to play gimmicky toys and mario and a ps3 to watch movies in hidef.

I bought the PS3 for both, right now I have about 12 blu-rays and 3 games, but I will be picking up many more games for it this year.

I bought it for both but since there are no games I've been very happily using it as a movie device. It's packed with gigs upon gigs of delicious media and has quickly become my favorite object in the living room.

Yes. I've bought 2 ps3's, with 1 of them being a Blu-Ray player only. I've got games for my ps3, but I'm still waiting on a game that completely makes the system a worthy game machine. Heavenly Sword fell short, and Uncharted came close, but still, I play more movies thru it than anything.

i've spent more time on my PS3 in the XMB/movie/music player/folding/watching dvds/blu rays than I have playing games, but i have been primarily using it for media because it does it so damn well

I bought a PS3 and a blu ray remote in the summer and so far I have built up a nice blu ray movie collection. At the time it was one of the cheapest blu ray players (it still is isn't it?) I didn't have any intention to buy any games for it since I own a 360. I want Uncharted though, but not at 60$. My first game will probably be MGS4, but seeing as that is pretty far off I may just wait for MGS4: Substance or something.

I only have Uncharted for my PS3 and over 50 BD movies .... So I guess is used only to play movies since I already finished Uncharted.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I'm really cheap. I almost never buy games at full price. Really, why would I when they'll inevitably be 1/3 the price in less than a year?
I bought a PS3 in April and the only PS3 game I have is Ninja Gaiden Sigma, just because I'm such a Ninja Gaiden whore. There are several games I'm waiting on price drops for, chief among them Uncharted. Until then, there are plenty of discounted 360 games to play.
I only have 16 titles on Blu-ray right now, and my movie budget is currently being banked so I can clean up during the inevitable HDDVD fire sales.

If it weren't for Blu-Ray, I wouldn't have bought a PS3 until sometime during the holiday last year(I got it in April). So I always planned on buying a PS3, but the movie feature pushed me to get it much earlier then I planned on.

I thought the Ps3 has no games meme was banned...

I have 9 games, 4 PSN games, and 15 BD movies. As soon as I pay off more of my bills, I'll be getting more of both.

Well, just like the cocky Sony execs said would happen lol, I got a PS3 at launch without really wanting any of the games that were there at launch and I was still happy with it because of the Blu-ray movies.

I stopped buying SD DVDs quite a while before the PS3 came out in anticipation and I now have about 120 BD movies.
Nice! keep up the good work.

:lol :lol

20+ Blu Ray movies
2 Games (NG:B & HS) - and I've not got past level one of either game.

I just can't stand the PS3 controller and the so-called triggers. Worst triggers ever.

I bought a PS3 to play games. And playing games I have been doing. Good ones. Great ones even. But I have 9 Blu-ray movies now, and it's great for that too.

I have a friend with a $20,000 HT who bought the PS3 for use as a BD player. He has now switched to a high-end standalone now, for the silence (home theater buffs don't consider the PS3 'silent' the way gamers do), but he has no regrets buying the PS3 as he felt it was absolutely the best player on the market at the time. He plays no games.

Bought mine back in all the launch craze, however to date I own 3 games. Uncharted SSD:HD and warhawk. I use mine as a DVD/BD player 98% of the time. As a multi-console owner the PS3's exclusive library just doesn't do it for me nor my wife, besides most of my real friends and co-workers/clients own a 360.

Oh and I own just one BD movie and that was a pack in at launch. Why buy when I can rent all the BD movies that I like?
