Anyone else buying the Slim over the Pro?

If I were buying a PS4 for the first time, I'd spring for the Pro even though I'm on a 1080p TV. I would want to know that I'm getting the best experience possible from all games going forward, even if it turned out to be minor differences for many of them. Add to that some of the older games being patched, and it seems like a good reason to spend more to me. You won't miss the money in the end, but you may chronically regret getting only the base-level experience for the remainder of the generation.

That said, I have a PS4 already, and no plans to dive into 4K any time soon, so I don't think I'll be getting a Pro unless the differences are substantial even at 1080p.

It really depends on how much money you have an what you value. If you're a totally new consumer to the playstation eco system it's different then if you already have a lineup of games. People keep acting like it's a 100 dollar difference which isn't really true. It's more like a 160 dollar difference when you factor in the bundled game.

PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the standard and has double the gpu strength, that's worth the price difference alone.

I'm still considering to buy a PS4. Not particularly fond of buying a half assed PC for the price point it's still at.

Eventually I would buy one for the library of games, but where's the rush. The slim is something that speaks more to me now.

The advantages of the Pro are so slim and by the time I could get the most out of it.. a new sony console will arrive. These intermediates are not for the larger mass.

And for all we know it's twice as loud. Whereas we have DF tests on the slim and it's far quieter and more energy efficient than even the CUH-1200 PS4's. We have no idea how the Pro is gonna be, but the PSU being rated at 330w with an enclosure barely bigger than the launch PS4 has me weary.

Sometimes I think we passionate gamers are out of tough with the average consumer purchasing these products. It's worth the money for me. Heck id spent the entire cost of the machine on a video card for my PC. But the average consumer is going to view this as something to get if they have a 4k tv. If they don't they slim will make the most sense for them due to the free game and cheaper overall price. Very few console are sold at 399.99 when you look at the big picture. Even the PS3 sold the majority of their console at above that price. There's likely a value proposition out there that techies can think of the justify any higher end purchase we want to make yet most people I know out in the real world purchase mediocre options.

Something to consider:

Of course, with great power comes great power bills. The Pro in particular uses a ton of power when it’s running; its maximum is 310 watts. The miserly billpayer may want to spring for the slim, which consumes at most 165 watts during a gameplay session.

that wattage is for the PSU. Otherwise it would be almost hundred watts more than PS3's max wattage.

Great post. I'd love to shake the hand of the person who bought based on energy consumption! That rules! :)

I think that would be evidence of poor marketing on Sony's part, because most people have 1080p TVs and the Pro's power advantages would be highly apparent at that resolution. The average consumer should be made aware that this product does something for them if they're looking for top of the line visuals. Hell, the power difference was a part of the initial narrative of PS4 vs. Xbox One.

How do you guys justify 399? Its why I don't have a current gen system yet.

Duh, I would love a Pro if someone gave it to me but a new Pro and Slim are hard buys for me when CUH1200 PS4's are out there for sub 250....

Do you guys just keep saving every check until you have it? Or do y'all really just make that much?

I am. It's tempting to get the pro but honestly I'm more excited for the smaller size and lower power consumption than I am for a bump in graphics (which will be on a game by game basis). By the time I'll care about having better graphics I'll just get the ps5

This. The PS5 won't be that far away and if you've been playing on the PS4 or Xbox One since the start of the console gen chances are you can do it until the gen is over.

People can afford things. Shocking, I know. 400 is only 150 more than 250, you're not exactly buying a house. If I'm going to spend a good amount of time on something (anything really) the price is justified.

What I'm struggling with here is that it's cheaper by ninety-nine U.S. dollars. If you have $300, you can probably figure out how to scrape together a mere 99 more to get a drastically superior piece of hardware.

Man, GAF is full of people with a lot of disposable income.

Yeah, if I were price-conscious I'd absolutely go for the Slim over the Pro. If I were buying a replacement PS4 though I'd probably buy the Pro just because I've got the library and this is an easy way of getting an extra controller with more HD space.

As for people saying one system will win out over the other this holiday? Don't get ahead of yourself. A single good deal in either direction will cause one to trounce the other. The Slim at $299 packed in with COD and some other major title for the year would sway most parents. They don't even have to buy a game, after all!

I am.

Don't care bout the Pro because I have a PC, I just want a Playstation for exclusives

A lot of people buy the console for the games that are on it. Not the other way around. So if they can play PS4 games with a 299$ machine, fine with them

Pretty much. I want to play PS4 games at the price point I find desirable. $299 is that price for me. I'll be playing the games I can't play on PC. I really don't care how they run, I just want to play them. Fortunately, most of the games I'm a fan of look good and run well enough on the current models, so it works out just fine for me.

I like that the slim has physical power/eject buttons and isnt a triple decker, but no. The pro model will be mine and Im hoping the capacitive buttons dont become an issue again.

I am. $100 or so is a lot of money when you're a student like me. I've been saving for a while and adding extra money would just set me back longer.

I also hate console gaming nowadays so I'm not expecting it to use it much but it's the only way I can play Persona 5, FFXV, and KH3 so I have no choice but to get one.

The official COD bundle this year is a 1TB model. For £40 more you can get a Pro instead.

Most parents will plump for the Slim I agree but I think many of those buying it for themselves with their own money will be getting a Pro. Sony probably make a lot more money on the Slim than on the Pro but in the grand scheme of things (games, accessories, PS+ subs) it's all the same to them!

Unless your main thing is to save some cash, there's no reason to get a Slim over a Pro. If your other main point is exclusives, then exclusives in particular will benefit form the Pro the most.

This. If you don't already own a PS4, not buying the pro is a sucker move.

Enough regular PS4 games don't hit 1080p on PS4. Especially Frostbyte games (FIFA is a Frostbyte game too but I'm not sure what it runs at natively)

That a pro will be worth it just to get a solid 1080p in every game.

Plus the extra power should keep the Pro relevant for a few years after the PS5 is released. Where as the vanilla PS4 will probably get dropped around that time. So $100 for a guaranteed extra 2 or so years of support seems like the way to go.

No it will not run at 310 watts all the time. That's just the max you can achieve. That is likely possible if playing in 4k with very demanding graphics that makes full use of the GPu like Horizon Zero Dawn.
Otherwise it would run at much less Watts.

It dynamically shifts watts to what's going on screen if in ui for example it would use like 10% of the max watts etc and if it's playing a standard game it would use even less

I like smaller consoles best, ultimately, and don't think the Pro will have much value to me now, at least not for a few more years anyway. I'm sick of having big ass consoles in my room and the living room. My Xbox 360 is a damn eyesore

Considering how fucking ugly the pro is and how much space it takes up and being cheaper the slim is much better. I mean obviously a lot of enthusiast will say otherwise. However, you guys need to realize a extra 100 dollars means a lot to other people. You guys won't understand because a lot of y'all are hardcore gamers. Saving money is essential to a lot of peoples lives even if its 100 dollars. Plus who the heck is going to fit that big chunky looking hardware under their TV other than hardcore gamers.

The 1TB PS4 Slim and Xbox One S models are awful value relative to the PS4 Pro so no, I don't think you're doing the right thing. £40-50 extra for a massive upgrade is no brainer.

Either get the 500GB Slim bundled with a free game you want or don't bother with it IMO.

How is the 1TB Xbone S awful value?

We are young l, educated adults(for the most part) with disposable income. I don't consider $400 a massive purchase. I wanted the Neo to be $500, but I know I'm not the average consumer.

Guess I really just make that much. I also suffer from Gollum disease where I need to get every shiny gadget.

Because you can get a 500GB Xbox One S and an external 2TB HDD for about the same price as the 1TB model. Same applies to the PS4 Slim especially when for £40 more you can get a PS4 Pro.

Nobody with any savvy should buy the 1TB PS4 Slim and Xbox One S SKUs. They're the sucker models where MS and Sony make an upgrade that probably doesn't cost them more than £10 into a £50 up-sell.

It's really easy to upgrade storage on PS4s and Xbox Ones, don't get conned by the console manufacturers.

I personally think 400 is a lot for the average person in the US but it is totally manageable with good money habits.

Im getting there..

Ive realized that I don't ever really need anything new as long as its in good condition. So that saves me money to start out. Im sure I can grab a Pro for 300-350 in no time.

The only reason I would go for a Pro is to preserve the PS4 exclusives. I keep looking at the OG PS4 and I know it'd be all I need but that nerd want for the latest always kills.

I am going to buy the Slim. I have a PS3 I'm going to upgrade from, even though I only want to play casual shit these days. Games like Metal Gear Solid are over for me so I've just been waiting for something like the Slim to be nice and affordable to play some mindless crap like sports titles and GTA.

To me the Pro doesn't seem like an upgrade at all. 4k is nothing to me and I don't understand any benefits outside that. All these minor graphical updates in new machines is just silly in my books, I certainly don't think it's worth an extra $100 to see a 2% better looking picture.

I will buy whichever is quieter. Not too sure I care about graphics these days, however my current PS4 is a jet engine that I could do without.

If the Pro is quieter than the Slim and the original, the extra money will be worth it. If the Slim is quieter than the Pro and the original, then the upgrade from my original will be worth it.

OP says graphics don't matter so a slim it is.

Pro is obviously (to me) way, way better value for money.

People thinking that the graphical differences will be small(2%, ha) are going to want to avoid Digital Foundry articles. 1080p TVs for the win =)

Time to get a new pair of glasses lol. 4K or even upscaled 4K is truly amazing.

why would I do that? I'd be losing money on getting what is essentially the same console I've had for the past three years and with no real benefit.

Absolutely no reason to buy slim over pro. No amount of spin/justification/reasoning/excuses can change it.
Pro will run same games at same price but games will look/perform better even on a 1080p TV.

Wait, the Pro and Slim are the same price? I thought the Pro is $400 and the Slim is $300?

Choosing regular over Pro would be silly considering for about 30% more money you get more than 200% power.
