I'm not having a go at the Star Wars series or anything, but for some reason I have never been able to 'get' or 'get into' Star Wars.

I watched all three films when I was a little chap, and I may even had seen one of them in the cinema, but despite my chums having all the figures it was just another film for me. I think maybe I wanted a Storm Trooper figure, and even now I like the design of them, but that's it.

I probably have fonder memories from my childhood of that awful flight of the navigator film for some reason, so you know maybe I'm just a bit off-synch.

I unfortunately experienced the prequoligy ... perhaps that ruined the whole lot for me? I know that some fans say, well the first two were pants, but the last one was great, but no, all of them were an absolute shower.

That's not to say that I am not against the idea of more films being made, but try as I might I really just cannot get into these.

For some reason the odd bit of merchandise, or the occasional game will attract my attention, I especially find the Lego stuff as being pretty cute (although I don't have any big sets). I really liked the first gamecube game, and also the more recent arcade game.

Most of my buddies are especially overexcited for this, even those that aren't big fans, why can't I get into this?

Anyone else that by rights should be into this but isn't?

The first Star Wars came out when I was 8. I was in heaven. I loved all of them, yes, even the fucking prequels.

But after Ep. III and Lucas saying it was his last one, I felt like it was my last one too. Never really been the least bit excited about the new one. It's just a big budget fanfic as far as I'm concerned.

Dont worry OP, im right there with you. I watched all 6 films to see what the hype was all about and im still confused about why theyre so popular. The films did nothing for me.

I've never cared much for them, or most superhero films for that matter.

The story and characters are just so bad.

Plus I have never been a huge sci-fi fan.

It probably helped to see the originals back when there was literally nothing else like them, as opposed to 30 years later after they have influenced and permeated every single aspect of pop culture and mediamaking.

Star Wars isn't sci-fi.

I like the movies. Don't care about the merchandise, extended universe, video games, or lore. I really love Empire.

I've never understood the draw. I didn't see the main trilogy until right before the prequels came out (in my early to mid 20's). They were dumb too. The Clone Wars cartoon kicked ass though.

Same. Even though I really like sci-fi I just can't get into Star Wars. I tried watching the movies but each time they just didn't do it for me.

I'm going to watch the first 3 movies or whatever. I'll find a thread and get a watch order. I plan to skip the prequels because the fanbase shits all over them CONSTANTLY. I'm usually not one to listen to salty folks like that, but the negative reaction towards them seems damn near unanimous.

I hope Im not disappointed like Vanish seems to be. These films are being hyped to hell. So I'm expecting something really engrossing and spectacular. If its middling crap I'm going to be pretty upset.

I'm there with you. I mean I enjoyed the movies and all. In fact, Phantom Menace was the first movie I ever watched in the cinemas.

But I'm not really feeling hyped or anything about this one. I'll probably watch it but maybe on Blu ray or something.

Right here.

I never did think the first movies were great. They were just 'ok' movies, nothing special.
The next 3 are absolute rubbish

I tried to watch the first ones again, with my kids, they got bored, I got bored and we turned it off

The new ones look a lot better from the trailers but they'll be a standard movie in the end. They'll be a lot like the new Star Trek movies, nothing wrong with that, they were enjoyable, standard movies.

I feel the way, I thought the movies were pretty cool and fascinating, but it never immersed me like the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Yeah probably

I imagine it's like watching Citizen Kane now after being told it was so great and influential. You've seen so many other films and shows that took lessons from and built upon what Kane did that watching the original feels a little basic and underwhelming. Star Wars changed filmmaking forever, but it's one thing to intellectually know that after the fact, and another to have experienced it at the time. I don't think it's at all surprising that someone watching the films for the first time today would have a "That's what all the fuss is about?" reaction.

I mean, I'm looking forward to seeing with it, but, we had a thread where everyone was talking about watching the trailer every day, and I'm..I'm just not one of those people. It's just a movie.

Also yeah, I agree with the people who are saying the Flight of the Navigator comment betrays and murders the OP. That movie is legit good.

Let's just say, the last three Star Wars' have certainly tempered my expectations. I know most people on this site are too young to remember the disappointment of "The Phantom Menace", but for me, it was the first movie I ever walked out of, and as such, I will believe that Episode VII is a good movie a few months after it is released and the initial wave of hype has died down.

I loved Star Wars, even really liked EpIII, watched some of the best scenes many times. But I haven't even watched the trailers for Ep7. Not even sure who's in it except old people for fan service and that's a turn off. Another huge turn off is JJ Abraham and he's the main reason I find it impossible to get my hypes and hopes up. I don't know even know when it's coming out. Oh but I did hear it's coming to Netflix next year, I'll watch it then.

I love Star Wars but the new film looks terrible outside of the stunning cinematography. The hype completely escapes me - it looks like an alternate universe fan fiction retelling of the first two films with new ideas taking a backseat to nostalgia and fan service. X wings, storm troopers, the falcon again and another fucking death star, and how many times are we going to visit Tatooine? For a universe as vast as Star Wars, they like spending a lot of time on a boring desert planet.

I'm kinda in the same boat.

I watched and enjoyed 4-6.

Didn't bother watching with 1-3

Just personally don't find the appeal to the franchise.

I watched IV but it didn't really do anything for me and I didn't bother watching the others. I'll probably eventually go back and try again but yeah I've yet to become a fan of Star Wars.

I did play KOTOR and one of the N64 games though and liked them both.

Not a single person involved in the main creative of Force Awakens had anything to do with The Phantom Menace, except John Williams. Expecting TFA to be bad because TPM was bad is like expecting Terminator 2 to be bad because Terminator Salvation sucked.

I wouldn't say I hate them, but when I finally saw the movies last year, they really didn't live up to the hype and left me underwhelmed. I have no desire to watch them again or see the next SW movie. Nothing against those that do like it - I'm happy people are excited.

I'm the same. I've seen all the movies just 1 time each. I dunno it doesn't really do anything for me. I've always been more into fantasy than sci fi though.

Star Wars is fantasy. The single science fiction element in all six films is the midi-chlorian thing, which was quickly and quietly ignored almost as suddenly as it was introduced.

Star Wars is a mixed bag for me. I've seen tons of classic films, and Star Wars 4-6 are noteworthy (especially when "Despecialized") as powerhouses of special effects from that era.

I don't plan on seeing Episode 7 in a theater, and it would take very strong reviews to get me to see it on Blu-Ray. The story of Star Wars seems really lame. Episode 5 drags with Yoda. It's kind of the point, but I didn't enjoy those sections. I was smiling in the opening of 5 with the attack on Hoth, and the great SFX, as well as the
assault on the Death Star
in 4. When I watched 4 last time, I watched the first 5 minutes then skipped the first hour, heavily convinced that I've seen it so many times as a kid and lately finding it boring. The next hour I liked a lot as action, but I know that the story leading up to that action is dumb. The Star Wars universe does almost nothing for me. I don't care about Han, Luke, Leia, or anyone else except maybe Vader because he's cool.

I'm still debating on rewatching 6. I was at most 14 years old when I saw it last. I watched 4, 5, 6 tons as a kid (age 3-8 maybe).

This thread is hurting my soul, but OP, I would have been right there with you until last year.

I saw the original films as a kid and liked them, but wasn't crazy about them. I really didn't like the prequels and had no desire to go back. Then I rewatched the originals last year (I'm 27) and it finally hit me. Something about the themes, the great character moments, and the world just sucked me in. I couldn't be more excited for the new film and I barely even cared a little over a year ago.

Except Terminator 2 came out before Terminator Salvation. It's more like expecting Terminator Salvation to suck if Terminator 2 sucked (which it didn't). At the time, George Lucas had a very solid history producing Star Wars movies and proved himself more than competent, which is why I was hyped for TPM. JJ Abrams has not proven himself to be competent at directing a Star Wars movie yet, so like I say, my expectations are tempered. Buy into the hype if you want, but I've done that already once, and I learn from my mistakes.
