Anyone else starting to dislike this gen?

I've never enjoyed playing games more. As far as I'm concerned, there are more games now being made that are worth playing at all different budgets, scales, and target audiences. If you can't find something worth playing, you're not trying trying hard enough.
Simply this.

Not my favorite generation because it missing the old charm of JRPGs..... But I like it, I really do, best generation for SONY first party games... a true evolution for them IMO.

The one thing I do miss from the olden days is the lack of quirkier, more charming games. For HD consoles at least, they don't seem as common place anymore.
For $3:

And there are a few more, and for less too.

Yep.
Killzone 2 was estimated to be between $40 to $45 million (some even put it at over $50 million).

Gears of War was around $10 million for the first game and $12 for the sequel.

Yeah, my point was let's not pretend that GG are some tiny indie developer.

My gen has no beginning. It has no end. Step into infinity. Play PC games.

And missing out on some of the best games in ages, like Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Bayonetta, Red Dead Redemption, Flower, the Mario Galaxies and upcoming masterpieces like GT5, Vanquish and The Last Guardian? No, thanks.

Not that I have a problem with PC gaming, not at all, but there are too many console exclusives for me to give up on them.

As a PS3-only player what I like of this gen are basically the great new brands (Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Star Wars TFU, Demon's Souls, Dead Space, Lost Planet, Blazblue, Nier, Batman AA, InFamous, Dead Rising, Folklore, to name a few) and the good sequels of existing sones, like SSFIV, RE5, DMC4 and so on.
I like Trophies too they add something to the game.

On the other side I dislike the lacking of unlockable in-game content; characters, weapons, game modes...in many of the games I've played, almost everything is already pre-unlocked or requires one playthrough. Fortunately there are exceptions, but it's like games are made easier.
It's even worse when content is only downloadable via DLC, not to mention (the worst thing) when it's hidden in the game and has to be unlocked (paying).

There are too many generic/clones FPS (even i I don't care about them) and a lack of variety in Horror Games, JRPG and many others genres.

Some too many multiplayer and online-oriented fighting games, like SSFIV and Blazblue.
I can challenge people from all over the world with rooms, tournaments, rankings and various game modes, but all I can do with my friends at home is playing a lousy versus mode :\

New Move/Kinect technologies...I really don't want gaming to become "swinging a wand to attack with a sword" or "move like a dumbass while trying to do a shoryuken"...

Platformers made their glorious return this generation.

Nothing else matters. This gen is redeemed only on that.

The only thing Iam hating is the long development times and all the delays. However this gen brought some awesome games...GeOW, GOW III, MGS4, COD MW1/2, BFBC2 are all my favorites might have forgot a couple.

It's not the best gen in my opinion, but it's delivered in many respects.

As for the whole creativity thing...if you're using a checklist it may seem like indie games are filling a void, but it'd be nice to have a few more new franchises that rest between the "AAA game that requires no extra thought from the player with guided arrow" and "small indie game" categories.

Not when I'm still waiting for such games as : Diablo III, The Last Guardian, Ni no kuni, GT5, Portal2, Journey, Dudebro II, etc, etc, and whatever comes from left field from an Indie dev in the meanwhile. This gen is treating me just fine and I think there was never this spectrum of choice available to the consumer with the digital distributing platforms (PC and consoles), indie devs self publishing or using some of those DD services to sell their games, three platforms fighting for the living room space, and with handheld business with competitiveness and new contenders that 5-10 years ago no one could ever thought that would come to this space. So... I'm liking this gen.

I really love this gen; I only have a PS3, but it's been enough for me since there are plenty of games that are appealing as fuck. Hell, I have most of the first-party Sony games, and I like/love pretty much all of them. And let's not forget the amazing multiplatform games such as Arkham Asylum, Red Dead Redemption, several EA games etc. Good shit to be had.

I think this console gen is great - a lot of awesome retail and downloadable games on all 3 platforms that almost any kind of gamer can find something to play plus things like achievements/trophies, more co-op gaming, XBL/PSN, optional installing and title updates are great additions to the console gaming IMO.

My only complaints are the DLC policy of some publishers and the lack of platformers on the PS360.

Nope, one of the best gens ever. We have many RPGs/RTS/Puzzle games too.

Machinarium, Limbo, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Folklore etc etc

There are not as many FPS/TPS games as OP thinks. Also there are great FPS games like Killzone 2 and Bad Company 2

And loads of indie games on various platforms! For example there a a sale on STEAM now on Plain Sight. PSN games like Shatter, Fat Princess, WipeoutHD! Unique games like Heavy Rain and others.

This gen killed gaming for me. I rarely play modern ones anymore. Might just become a disgruntled retro gamer.

For all I care, this gen could continue for the next four-five years without any problems. I am more then happy with where the industry is heading now that developers are getting comfortable with hardware and budgets are starting to normalize. This generation has brought us some of the coolest stuff in video games, so why not celebrate that instead of picking out stuff to hate.

More to the point, is there any *point* in bringing out a next gen any time soon? Yeah, sure there's the POWERRRRRRRR side of things, but it's becoming increasingly apparent that no-one other than the absolute biggest developers can actually make use of that power and still turn a profit. Would a new generation benefit anyone other than those developers and the few players who thrive on visual fidelity at any cost?

Wii is - potentially - an exception to this, because bringing it in line with the other two could allow for more cross-platform development which widens the potential audience of any such title.

The only thing I really dislike about this generation are achievements and trophies. Otherwise I think it brought us some of the best games since the 16bit era.

Too many shooters. But I love this gen so far. So many good niche/indie games available on PSN/XBLA/Wii. And so many good quality big budget games available on the PS360PC.

You won't see me complaining.

This gen is ok. Not as glorious as the last, but good nonetheless.

But I'm getting old, so only a few games hook me anymore. Can't stand JRPG's, most shooters, sport games and even starting to dislike fighters (thanks to Tekken 6).

Portal is good, Starcraft is good and Nintendo still makes some no-bullshit games like Mario Galaxy.

I'm really split on this gen. For the most part, I'm positive on it. But for every couple of games or systems that I enjoy, there's some crazy new development or business strategy that rubs me the wrong way.

if I had less disposable income, I think I would hate this gen.

Pros:

-I love immesring myself in open worlds so Oblivion, Fallout 3, RDR have been some of my fav games to ever come out.

-I'm a leetle bit of a gfx whore, so I enjoy the shiny shiny new games on my television.

-The best games on the Wii are some of the best, most imaginative games Nintendo has EVER produced.

-After a bit of a slow start, iPhone gaming has grown into a wonderful place to play small, indie titles for a couple bucks. some of them are downright brilliant (Sword and Poker, baby).

-Smaller, downloadable games on the consoles have given me some of my favorite experiences of the generation (eg: Braid, Flower)

Cons:

-consoles were too damn expensive for too long. and now with motion peripherals, the price for the HD twins is going UP.

-shitty experiments in DLC make consumers out for suckers (paid costume unlocks, horse armor)

-the new "online passes" and other publisher initiatives to get people buying new just rub me the wrong way

- pre-order exclusive bullshit from retailers is super dumb and embarrassing. similarly, most "special editions" of games aren't worth the cost and cynically appeal to the worst, collectionist nature of "hardcore" gamers.

-the amount of prominent shovelware on the Wii is disheartening. the system is capable of more but is so rarely tapped to its full potential.

Not my favorite gen. Jrpg is nearly dead on consoles. I really wanted to see if anyone could further what DQ8 with world, animation and scope. I also don't find new control tech an upgrade. The two zeldas on the ds were the worst of the series for me. Waggle future still has decade to iron out gimmicks too. The one genre where it would work great, a pure AAA adventure in vein of Kings Quest I have yet to see.

With "HD" consoles that cant run all games in 1080p, so many games with the same art style and to damn many FPS / TPS.

Funny, I don't play FPS/TPS yet I've found plenty of games that appeal to me this gen and I'm looking forward to some others.

People say the same shit about every gaming generation. I remember a bunch of people whining about last gen and how it sucked compared to the PS1/N64 days and how nothing can touch the SNES/Genesis halcyon days.

Whatever, every generation has its strength and weaknesses, this one is no different. Since its not finished I can't judge it yet. For variety's sake last gen was probably my favorite, but I've enjoyed gaming since Atari and have always found something to play.

I was already bummed last gen. PS1/N64/Saturn forever!
why?.. i can remember lousy controls, horrible horrible cameras and fugly graphics.

Some great games, don't get me wrong, but there are great games now to.

yep. and its not a coincidence that every generation has some young adults comparing their experiences with consoles when they were 12-16 (when everything is always the most rad) with their current experiences, as they grow up and get more jaded and cynical. they're just not going to be as impressed.

I'm not trying to say that all responses in this thread are of that type, but it can account for some people who find themselves less impressed with an particular "present" generation compared to the one prior.

Speaking as 31 year old dude, i thin I already went through that phase 10 years ago and now I'm back on board, excited about a bunch of new stuff.

Why do people want a new gen? The way things are going, we are just going to get some insignficant hardware upgrade plus casual crap like waggle and kinect.

They are chasing the casuals. Your smarter gamer have realized that the hardcore action is on the PC.

Handhelds + smartphones + PC are going to slaughter the obsolete idea of consoles.

This gen's fine, but what the thread title made me finally realize, "Wow, 'gen', what a stupid fucking term. Straight out of the 90's". Am I the only one? Words like "gen" and "next-gen" make me think Zubaz, LA Lights, and Saved by the Bell, or some stupid ad gracing the pages of Gamepro back in the day, maybe for the SNES's Super Scope. There has to be some better way to denote the different eras of competing consoles.

Help me GAF, you're my only hope!

Well, you seem to know the score. Can you tell me when the time is near? I'll be playing on that gravestone under the TV.

Wish I were smarterz and all that.

Bad news is you're butthurt, good news is next-gen casual consoles aren't coming for a while so you will have time to enjoy core games on the PC and 3DS.

I think I can see where OP was coming from. I thought I was tired of this gen too when I was trapped in a new release AAA -> new release AAA -> new release AAA... cycle.

I'd say if you step back, allow yourself to skip the next big FPS/TPS and spend more time on the weird and quirky games readily available, you'll probably snap out of it. In particular, I think the DS and PC have tons of rejuvenating experiences, though I've also heard the same of the Wii.

My games for the last week: TF2, Starcraft 2, Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Plainswalkers, Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright. Only one FPS.

My my, I happen to roll around with wild abandon in the indie game market on PC, so my colon is so lubed you could seal a bathroom.

My main gripe is the yearning for legitimacy one must be to run with the "hardcore" title. I'm just here to play games, who gives a rat's ringus of the platform?!

Handhelds, yay. Best things in the world.

I have reached FPS/TPS burnout levels also. But the good news is that since I'm not excited about any console games anymore, I am back to where I belong - PC gaming.

Generation?

The PC is biding its time.

The PC is patient. After all, generations mean nothing to the PC.

When we were all small and playing NES, there was the PC.

When games became cool on the PlayStation, there was the PC.

When games stopped being cool on the Wii, there was the PC.

When the current consoles are silicon tombstones, there will be the PC.

There will always be the PC.

And you can always watch Lord of the Rings while reading a choose your own adventure book. That's kind of the same as playing CRPGs, right?

Come on, I'm sure you know how inaccurate that is and you just want to get a rise out of people.
Or use irony to make fun of myself. Guess it just wasn't as funny as it sounded in my head.

I love the later end of the cycle like this because now you have a large library of excellent games available to you and most at relatively cheap prices.

Nah, I understood it was a joke, I just used it to point out something that has always amused me.

Well I've got shooteritis, DLCitis and multiplayerphobia so for me this gen is a clear step down from the last one :/

But it can still redeem itself because the games that I've played this gen has been really good, just that you get 5 shooters for every good game -_-

I haven't liked it for sometime. Crappy hardware quality and more emphasis on graphics than gameplay has put this gen on a path which could lead to another trash heep hole in the middle of a New Mexico desert. There has been some innovation, but nothing close to what we've seen in the past generations. Games just seem to be the same as last gen with a nicer coat of paint.

not it has starcraft 2 and halo reach it's boss.
