I'm buying an iPod nano (dunno which color to choose) tomorrow to replace my old first generation iPod mini.

8gb flash, video and über-sexy looks = Insta-purchase :D

Maybe for you, but for someone that doesn't need every single song they have on their PC, it can be a good size.

Doesn't matter what apple releases, there will always be detractors the same way that there will always be fanboys praising everything. Those of us in the middle who might be looking to upgrade an iPod have a ton of options now.

I've lived with a 15GB Dell DJ 1st gen I got for $120 for 3 years--I can't wait for my 16GB Touch to ship.

I got an order in early--sitting on the phone when the conference ended.

For me its pretty bad i have 20gigs of just metal. But some of my friends barely have 10 gigs of music, im sure they would love it.

Okay, i want the iphone now. I mentioned this earlier on in the thread.. then they cut the price by $200. Problem is, im in canada. Did that douche release his unlocking software yet?

I'm REALLY tempted to get an iPhone now, but I'll hold out for 3G. Oh heck, bonus is next week, maybe I will.

I'm definitely getting a 160 gigger, and I'll get something using flash memory for running and the gym. Not sure which, though. The new Nanos are hot, but can I resist the conversation piece value of the touch?

I have 60gigs of music on my PC, but for me I don't need to have all those songs with me. I just need my latest albums, podcasts and a few favorites. I was going to get a 80GB, but just going through that music on my PC is a chore. Just give me the best songs on my iPod and I am happy.

Speaking as someone who had 3G support, and then lost it when I switched to my work phone...you should wait it out.

3G makes life so much better, not to mention that the next revision will come with more than just 3G support.

I have a phone with 3G now. I was actually going to get an iPhone on launch day, but the week before release I was exposed to 3G, and I knew my next phone needed to have it, so I got an 8525 and figured I'd best wait for at least one major iPhone rev anyway.

160 gig iPod is my first priority. I've kind of needed a bigger one for a while now. I already have several other flash players (I troll woot a lot), but I'd rather an iPod one. I have a first gen 512 meg shuffle that I got for free from work, but that's too small for me.

I wasn't referring to that specifically, I was more worried about the fact that they make their clients regret buying an iPod/iPhone, since they'll release a better/cheaper one right after, like what they're doing now. They slammed Vista for having several SKUs, while they do an even worse thing by cutting prices and releasing better versions too early.

You do realize how long it's been since a true update to the iPods right? Your argument really doesn't hold water.

Is it possible to use the music playing feature of the IPhone without signing up with AT&T? Without unlocking it, I mean.

Anyone thinks the iPhone is going to end up being a failure?

A company doesn't drop the price of something this much so soon if it's doing well.

And I think the iPod Touch is going to take potential iPhone sales.

mmm, the 160gb thinner than my 60gb (well 12%, but still...)

ima bite, I bought my 5G the day they were released and it's practically falling apart

I think the addition of a fourth iPod model permanently messes up the "generation" distinction, because it now isn't clear/agreed upon what the "flagship" ipod line is - the classic (space) or the touch (ui).

eventually, the mini and the classic will be merged.. as flash memory prices drop and capacity rises, there will be no point in the classic.

No.

No.

Aaaaand... No.

regarding the touch, as its not shipping until the 28th, does it matter whether you buy from the online store or go to a real store? Who'll generally get them first, or will they both have them at the same time?

I'm telling you people, the biggest announcement today wasn't the Touch, the Classic 160 or the Nano's smokin' hot price: it was the iPhone price drop.

Actually it does. It's true that this is a major iPod upgrade, a new iPod to be accurate. But when do you think we will see a new iPod with a bigger drive? Soon I bet you, and I'll be pissed if I bought the 16GB iPod Touch.

However, on the iPhone side, it holds water perfectly, when was the iPhone released? A couple of monthes ago, and now we see a 200$ price cut. Now tell me that doesn't piss you off as an iPhone owner?

Kung Fu Jedi said:
Um...why? Just get the damn touch.

yeah, do this. Unlocking is a pain and you have to run stuff on the PC/mac to use itunes with it, and you run the risk of itunes updates screwing it up.

I don't think this messes up the "generation" distinction, they've done this before. They did it when they introduced the iPod photo, killed it, and relaunched it as the 4G iPod with color. It wouldn't surprise me if they kill the classic line and the touch line as soon as they can cram 60GB into the Touch without killing the battery or rocketing the price and then relaunch the Touch as the new gen flagship iPod.

You just knnow Skype is coming to iPod touch. Pity it doesn't support 802.11n yet.

is it confirmed that it comes with a microphone? (or speakers even?)

edit: nevermind, forgot about the ipod port, and 3rd party accessories...

Wow, current IPhone users got screwed.

Yea, I just found out from my gf that they dropped the price.

MOTHERFUCKERS!

I stay away from being an early adopter (with the exception of game systems) of technology forever, then the ONE TIME that I take the plunge early....FUCKED! :(

It was a good month of exclusivity baby....we'll always have the good times.....*sobs*

Ugh, this is frustrating. Apple did very little to help me here.

I'm all for the cheaper 8GB Nano: it's double the space of my existing 2G Mini, $80 less than the old 8GB Nano, and the ability to play video somewhat removes that "missing feature" despite probably not being used very often.

However, the 80GB classic is only $60 more for 10x the space. That logic just doesn't seem to make sense to me, but yet something with a smaller form factor does. Whereas the Touch is priced outside of my range quite easily, and I doubt I'd use it enough as a video player to justify its purchase.

So, despite offering all sorts of options, my perfect iPod just didn't show up. Le sigh. I would have at least liked 12GB Nano, darnit.

8gb Ipod Touch- WANT!!!!!
It's the Iphone- without the phone, which I want. But darn, I can get the 80gig Ipod Classic for less.

Decisions, decisions.

Oh, if you want to buy a 30gig Ipod Video that shows an error message when trying to turn it on, PM me.

Yep. every single person that I have shown mine off to wants one, they just can't justify a $600 phone. $400 is going to be hard for allot of people to resist.

As a day 1 iphone owner I am a little pissed, but thats what happens when you have to have all the latest techno-junk.

First of all, it's been over a year since the last iPod updates, so I don't think you'll see memory bumps again any time soon. Certainly not before the holidays. I'd say Spring 2008 at the earliest. That I could live with if I were buying a new piece of hardware now. Besides, everyone knows that hardware upgrades are inevitable. Apple doesn't make them that often however.

As for the iPhone, in case you haven't been reading any of my posts, I've already said multiple times, that I'm pissed. It's a joke that they burned early adopters that badly. It's not like Apple to do this generally, and look how long it typically has taken them to cut the price on iPods. A price cut was going to happen at some point, as will hardware upgrades, but THIS SOON, and THIS MUCH, is a pretty tough to take.

And your Vista argument still doesn't make sense. The slamming against Vista was for the fact that there were so many different versions, at so many different prices points, that it was tough to choose the one that was right for consumers. That isn't the case with the iPods or even the iPhone. It's pretty simple to tell them all apart, and select the one that is right for you, with size, features, and price clearly defined. Sorry you don't get that.

Well, right. It's a given that eventually the classic is going to go away, and will be replaced with a high-capacity touch ipod. Whether that's next year, the year following... whenever.

But then... what will that be? 7G? And if it IS 7g, then what's 6g now? The new classic, or the new touch? It's like... eh. I think it's time to draw the line on these "G" distinctions.

Between this (read: any) Apple thread and his PS3 whining, this is the best option.
Fuck you, I spent $600 on a PS3 so I have the right to whine about it all I wish. In fact it's about the only real pleasure the damn thing gives me.

The Touch looks awesome, but I have no use for it. With the tiny storage, it can't serve as my main music player. Given the size, it can't be use when I'm exercising. Outside of home and college, it's nearly impossible to find free wifi access points.

fair enough. $200 is A LOT!

... i think im getting over the craptacular iPod Touch now.

The ipod touch was DOA when Apple announced the iphone price drop. Seriously, they need to give us a better reason to buy one. Eiother price it lower or give 32gb.

We'll see about the iPod's memory upgrades.

On the Vista thing, I wasn't saying that the iPod/iPhone have the same problem, I said as I explained here, that cutting prices and upgrading your products too soon is even a worse move than putting out several SKUs that could confuse the costumer.

the iPod Classic apparently now features a

"anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel enclosure with rounded edges"

Can anyone tell me if this is a good thing?

I really, reeeeally wish they still had a White Ipod Classic. I wanna bite on a 160 gig, but I can't figure out if I actually like either of those colors. It's not a deal breaker or anything, I just can't get a good feel for what they really look like outside of the apple "glamor shots" environment. Did they have any out in the wild at the conference? Cause I'd love to see some raw shots.
