guys im not gonna argue that anyone who knows what they are doing will make thier own ringtone and it will be easy but does anyone not feel disapointed that the iPhone doesn't do this nativly from teh songs you have on teh device.

I mean if you want a song as a ringtone you will also want to listen to the full version, you gona buy it anyway but joe clueless will be forced to do it twice.

You might not like it, but that is the way it is. Ringtones make artists more money than album sales now. So don't think that carriers and labels aren't making a killing too. I agree with what you are saying, but because of the revenue stream ringtones have started, they will be seperate products.

Its just disapointing thats all (as said just above).

I pulled the trigger. 8GB iPhone. :) I wonder how many phones they sold today?

No idea, but I pulled the trigger too. I'm on Cingular already, was waiting for revision 2 but who knows when that will be. 4GB for $299 was damn tempting.

If it has the social effect I think it will there will be a default that they all use which will let EVERYONE around you know you have a IPHONE.

I agree though, it could be a standard app for unprotected songs. I think many phones already do this with .wavs

Well, right. It's a given that eventually the classic is going to go away, and will be replaced with a high-capacity touch ipod. Whether that's next year, the year following... whenever.

But then... what will that be? 7G? And if it IS 7g, then what's 6g now? The new classic, or the new touch? It's like... eh. I think it's time to draw the line on these "G" distinctions.

To the best of my knowledge, more space + significant new features has always been what makes the distinction of a new G. The classic line fits both, it has an expansion of space and a new UI. On the other hand the Touch only has new features and lacks the data capacity of the older models. Knowing that, we can clearly define the new products as:

iPod classic = 6G flagship model
iPod Touch = 1G Touch model

If the Touch were to get a new model that had more space + significant new features than the 1G Touch, it would be classified as "Touch 2G" (nano's, mini's, and the shuffle's work this way, they each have separate G lines from the flagship G). When the classic line is replaced with a new model that has more space + significant new features, it will be the 7G. If Apple kills the 6G classic & the touch line by introducing an "iPod with touch" that replaces the 6G, it will be 7G.

The problem with the iPod Touch is that it is too expensive for the nano crowd and doesn't have enough storage for the iPod Classic crowd. I'm not really sure what their market is, and the close price-competition with the iPhone means that a good number of people will just pony up the money for a new phone.

The product is just a stopgap to get Apple to the point where they can put WiFi and Touch in a hard-drive based product without compromising battery life or pricing themselves too high. I suspect it will be phased out within a 12-18 months in favor of an HDD-enabled touchscreen device. iPod Mini 2: Electric Boogaloo.

I was going to wait as well, but $200 off is just too awesome. Setting it up now.

I was already at&t as well, so no big deal. Anyone want to buy a Samsung Blackjack?

8GB and 16GB?

Fuck you.

Give me 30GB at $299 and I might consider it.

I think I will be getting the 16GB Touch. I have 3 weeks to flip flop on this, lol. But I will just go down to the Apple Store and pick it up, no need to get it online.

Also, anyone thinking about getting an iPhone better do it now. Knowing Apple, the dock and power adapter will probably go bye-bye now that the price has dropped.

yeah its standard now, I have custom rings for calls, alarm, sms, mms etc...
as have most of my friends.

The consumer apathy other the iPhone double dip is madness to me, wont go well over here at all. (guess its a different market & consumer attitude)

Everyone i know uses custom ringtones, noone I know has been forced to pay for them ever by default (this will also be expected on the iPhone above all other things).

Guess its just wait and see.

It well be a while before that happens.

Then they won't get my money until that happens.

The phones had a profit margin of over 200$?

Holy shit. Thats how you run a business

iPods cost like $67 to make...

They used to give you a case?

Ugh, I'm gonna have to wait for people to get theirs before I decide since I need to see these colors in a normal light.

A long long time ago (actually it was a belt clip...).

I think the mentality that allows someone to spend $600 for a phone allows them not to really care about spending 1.98 for a song and ringtone.

quick/stupid question for you iphone owners. if i activate/install itunes on my work laptop, is the device tied to it? i plan on using my home workstation for synching it moreso than my work one. info is much appreciated.

Apple also introduced a new universal dock today. It comes with a dock adapter for the iPhone. So you might be right about the dock and power adapter.

Damn Patrick, you didn't waste one second did you? :lol

Did you get the 8GB?

Nope. :lol Seriously, the screen on my phone doesn't work, so this made sense.

I don't trust myself, especially when I'm drunk. I may have to get the 3rd party crap, depending on what I read up about re: AppleCare and accidental damage.

It was part of my motivation to be sure. $50 worth of accessories is nothing to sneeze at.

Oh god, the shame of it. 16GB iPhone touch, bought.

Of course this means no iPhone for at least a year. Actually that may pay off. At least one of my iPods (see below) will probably die and by then iPhones should, should have >32GB capacity.

Owner of:
1 dead 3G iPod (10GB)
1 1G iPod Shuffle (1GB)
1 1G iPod nano (4GB; black)
1 5.5G iPod (80GB; white)

So any word if you can update your podcasts and download them through Wifi?
Sounds like at this point you're only able to download music from the ITMS. Videos are a definite no-go.

Nice...
Better to just leave your phone at home if your going to get plastered, you could be like my one friend who dropped his in a margarita, or my other that dropped it in the toilet, or my other that dropped it in a river...

But congrats on your new purchase.

FUCK. What's the point of Wifi if you're still stuck to your PC? Major disappointment for me right there.

I'm actually ok with no videos for now, but podcasts need to happen. Baby steps I suppose.

hey what is the best drag and drop MP3 manager out now for the iphone? I want to delete some songs and add some but I have it synced to my PC at home :(

Your solid state ones should not die off. That's why I never bought an iPod until the nano came out, and I'm glad they are sticking with flash memory for the iPhone and Touch lines. I'll get a Touch when the price comes down a bit.

Also, the new nano is ugly. Do not want.

If wireless podcast syncing can be added through a firmware update, them i'll get one now and wait it out. But if it's going to be something added on to Touch 2.0 then fuck that, i might as well stick with my 5G.

Don't be ashamed man. I will be joining you at the end of the month, when they are released. It is a total gadget with little improvement over my 30GB video iPod, but it is sexy.

I like the ipod touch...but revamping the entire lineup for video when we don't even have an itunes video marketplace? Not so useful. :/

(In Canada, I mean.)

well dammit it to hell. i was all prepared to buy an ipod today but 8gb and 16gb? im gonna need more room than that :(

160gb video ipod might be nice though....damn you apple.
