Apple confirms iPod "Special Event" on September 5th

I can't decide on whether an iPod Touch is worth it or not to accommodate my 60GB video (can't really justify 160GB iPod, I'd still fill it to overcapacity).

I'm leaning towards one because I really need something for working out (I use speakers now but that won't be an option when I move). I don't really want to use my 60gb for running.

I don't know if there's confirmation yet, but does this mean that with WiFi you can listen to digital radio stations, or is that still a no go?

16GB means virtually no lossless albums, though I guess that isn't really needed with workout headphones :/

And an iPhone isn't an option for me because along with everyone else I know, I'm on Verizon so I won't be switching carriers.

The problem with the iPod Touch is that it is too expensive for the nano crowd and doesn't have enough storage for the iPod Classic crowd. I'm not really sure what their market is, and the close price-competition with the iPhone means that a good number of people will just pony up the money for a new phone.

People said similar things about the iPod mini in comparison to the iPod and that just exploded. I really expected the mini (and the Shuffle too) to tank hard and they didn't. People really did just want to pay more than they should for the pleasure of a small, pink iPod.

I can see the appeal of the Touch too. iPhone interface and features, but you don't need a new phone, a new contract and the $60 monthly bill that goes with it and you save $100 on top. Considering that I know people who've bought $599 iPhones just to use as iPods, that's not such a ridiculous proposition.

It ain't the magic bullet for me yet (Touch + 160GB please), but at the same time don't underestimate the appeal to other sections of the market. After all, who'd want an iPod with no screen when there are cheaper, screened players on the market or you could pay a little bit more for a nano?

Exactly. I fully believe 8 and 16 GB was as much as they could put in to stay at the 300/400 dollar price points. Maybe I'm a fool though.

$78 for 8GB on Newegg... what's the other $222 go to? Profit?

Mind you, in bulk, Apple can get these a lot cheaper, too.

I like the ipod touch...but revamping the entire lineup for video when we don't even have an itunes video marketplace? Not so useful. :/

(In Canada, I mean.)

But you can encode your own stuff. That's better than their marketplace anyway.

Understatement, they own a large chunk of Samsung specifically for this.

I didn't want black, but maybe I do now..

I suppose if you're running the bittorrent train as antipiracy groups assume the entire population is doing. Don't you need to encode for their wacky format though, or does it swallow most sorts of h.264?

(Transcoding is one of those fun little things you can avoid entirely if they sold video content. bleh.)

You'd think they would change their pricing strategy for the iPod Classic and drop it to $199 and then laugh at MS while they walk to the bank, but nooo.

Then again, people eat any iPod product up like no other, so they are just banking in on the lack of consumer dissonance and make as big of a profit as they can.

Conversely, when the entire PMP industry is only just migrating to 8GB+, it tells you something about flash cost and engineering requirements for 16-32GB players. If it was really that easy you could assume we'd see a 32GB Archos flash device by now (without SD slot).

Flash cost scales up sharply based on size; it's tough to say what holds back a larger device though where 4 chips is easier done.

Looks like I'll be at the apple store Friday trying to get my $200 back for my 3 day old iphone. Think they'll be dicks about it and try charging me the $60 restocking fee (even though I clearly don't intend to return anything)? PM me you predictions!!

Putting video aside for one moment, it astonishes me that some people actually have 160gb of music, but I guess many do.

I have barely 12gb on my iTunes. How much do you have?

Yes, because there is absolutely nothing else that makes up the product. Absolutely nothing.

11.36...just checked.

The problem is the videos that I have.

22.48. I just realized 160 GB might be overkill, but with videos and my rapidly-expanding library it's probably safer than 80.

I had around 30gigs, but my external HD I had it on bit the dust so now I have a couple gigs here, a couple there. One of these days I will re-rip all my CDs.....

MP3 folder reads 19GB. I know I could make 16GB easily work for me [there's a ton of shit I don't listen to anymore since my tastes always change], but I refuse to pay $399 for 16GB on principle. That's just too much money.

Hrm i am torn between these new ipod models. Damn you apple.

I currently have 18.1gb of music, 99% of which i dont really listen to on my ipod. So a 16gb touch would be awesome, just because its sexy. A 160gb classic would be beyond overkill.

I think i will go with a touch but i am just not too sure. My old 3G Ipod does need an upgrade though :lol

I'm not a huge fan of the new design, but I'll probably get a Nano. I really want the Nike+ kit.

Then again it might be worth getting a last gen one.

Thank god I don't have these principles you're talking about.

16GB Ipod Touch is gonna be my first ipod for sure :D

Can you transfer music and videos from your PC over WiFi with this or the iphone, or do you have to use usb?

Guys I only need 8GB and I only watch like 4 video podcast (but they are 16:9). Do you guys think I can justify 100€ more just for the bigger screen and the novelty of using the touch screen? Wifi doesn't help me much because there are no free hotspots in my are and I am not someone who pays to quickly get on the net.

Do anyone of the larger iPods have a "shuffle" button like the iPod Shuffle, or do you have to go through the menu to turn shuffle on/off? I love setting it to shuffle, then finding a song I like, flipping the switch to straight playback to play the whole album. I've grown to use this feature a lot, and I know my 4G could not do this.

no

Juice they're really good with remorse periods. I was offered $60 cash or a free swap on a 4G which was a present. They swapped it immediately.
However it was out of the box (where you'll find your restocking fee)

according to people over on the fatwallet forums, some people have gone to the apple store and was refunded $200 on the 8 gig iphones

iPod Mini was discontinued less than 2 years after it was introduced. It did not "tank" but it was a pretty obvious stopgap that was not made to be futureproof. I'm not saying that Touch will tank, just that it is not long for this world (in its current form). Just as the mini was replaced by the nano, so to will the Touch be replaced by some sort of HDD-based model.

THX sometimes I jsut need someone that says that it really would be a waste of money for me. New nano it is for me.
Well I think you could totally justify it, Xater. In fact, you're a fool if you don't.

has there been any update as to when the 'by the weekend' is for these appearing in stores? and by in stores do they mean apple stores or retail stores in general (best buy, circuit city, etc)?

General retail on Saturday if their own logistics go to plan.

100€ is alot of money for larger screen that will be used like 5-8 times a week to watch a video. The touch stuff is not that important to me and as already mentioned Wifi is pretty much not usable in my region without paying.

I also need some money to buy me one of those sexy new iMacs because I am totally pissed of by my PC. I should have never gone back to a Windows PC. I hate it...

:lol I'm just screwing with you, man. Hyoushi's right.

ordering 16 gig touch later.

this is exactly what I wanted, they even went beyond and put Wifi and made it smaller than the iPhone!

16 gigs isnt enough for all my music, but I plan to get this now as a video player/temp music player/web browser until maybe the next set of ipods where I will go MP3 player focused and keep my touch for video.

The iPod Mini was not a stopgap at all. I'm 99.9% sure it was Apple's best selling iPod at the time and they replaced it at the peak of its success with the iPod Nano which surprised a lot of people.

They probably could've kept the mini going a lot longer if they wanted to.

I use my 30GB ipod video MUCH more as a portable HD than as an actual music player.

My main (only) computer is a macbook pro with a 75GB hard drive... I'm constantly wrestling for space. I have 13 gigs free right now, and that's VERY good for me I'm usually closer to 5 gigs free.

So, I do the opposite of what most people do. I have my ENTIRE music collection on my iPod, but not on my HD. Ditto other media. I just don't have the HD space to keep it all duplicated on the PC itself. Once something goes on the iPod, it comes off my computer, never to return.

Anyone thinks the iPhone is going to end up being a failure?

A company doesn't drop the price of something this much so soon if it's doing well.

And I think the iPod Touch is going to take potential iPhone sales.
Ken Enderle? Izzat you?
