Interesting Tidbits Gleaned From the iPod Touch Features Guide

Friday, 14 September 2007

Notes from the PDF iPod Touch Features Guide:

p. 7 — The screenshot from iTunes shows system version 1.1 for the iPod Touch. Presumably version 1.0 was the version of mobile OS X that shipped with the iPhones.

p. 10 — The sleep/wake button is on the top left. On the iPhone, it’s top right. Wonder why they moved it? Also worth noting that on the iPod Touch, the headphone jack is on the bottom.

p. 13 — You can double-click the Home button to bring up on-screen playback controls, even when the screen is locked. Nifty. But, unlike the iPhone, the Touch has no hardware volume buttons, and it doesn’t have a play/pause/next-track clicker on the headphone cable. That clicker is my very favorite thing about the iPhone’s music player; I think it’ll be a pain to use an iPod Touch that’s in your pocket. (AppleInsider notes that you can’t just plug iPhone headphones into an iPod Touch, either — the Touch doesn’t support the clicker.)

p. 16 — iPod Touch supports several keyboard layouts: QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, QZERTY, and Japanese IME.

p. 17 — Double-tap the space bar while typing to enter a period followed by a space. That shortcut isn’t available (yet?) on the iPhone.

p. 50 — You really can’t add events in the Calendar app on the iPod Touch. Lame.

p. 52 — You can, however, add and edit address book entries in the Contacts app.

p. 63 — Support for closed captioning. The iPhone doesn’t (yet?) have this.

p. 65 — Optional Debug Console for MobileSafari. The iPhone doesn’t (yet?) have this. ★

Also, the touch is crapload thinner:

Just dropped by the Apple Store to checkout the new iPods, including the touch. The new Nano rocks, very sexy. The Classic is nice, but what you would expect. The new interface is nice but could be snappier.

The touch is cool, but nothing special when you have an iPhone. Very thin though. The iTunes WiFi store wasn't working on the one I played with though. Definetly a cool gadget but I'll stick with my iPhone' which I'm posting from! :)

I also played with the interface on the new Nanos and classics. I think it is as big a mistake as the 3rd gen button placement. On both it felt chunky and slow. The interface needs to be snappy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. For a flash drive, the Nano, it was surprisingly slow.

the new nano is the best ipod ever made, got one the other day, but:

how do i turn off that weird clock screen saver thing that comes up when the screen dims? don't really like it that much.

yeah, the debate on the touch screen is a bit odd, some sites say its better and other say its worse than the iphone.

the worse complaints are mainly that you need to hold it at more of an angle, nothing big.

the difference is, firmware updates can improve menu performance. the button placement was unchangeable if u bought a 3G.

My only complaint with the Nano is that the wheel is kinda jumpy. Its fun trying to raise the volume and all of a sudden I've got LOUD AS FUCK Foo Fighters making my ears bleed.

I noticed that too while I was playing with it at Best Buy. I'd be trying to select something on the menu but it kept jumping past what I was trying to look like even though I've been using a nano click-wheel for quite a few months now and know how to make it work. makes me hesitant.

i want the iphone - i don't want a contract as I just finished up. The touch looks cheap compared to the iphone :(

I don't think it looks as nice as the iPhone either, but it's far from cheap. It's actually a very cool device. I was shocked at how thin it was when I had one in my hand. The icons looked kind of wonky compared to the iPhone as well, but it would be something you would get use to.

If you want the iPhone without the phone, the Touch seemed pretty cool in the short time I got to play with it.

Hey guys I am actually using my brother's iPod touch to post this right now and I got to say it is really slick. They only had one in stock so I let my brother have it. Hopefully if they get more in stock Monday I will have my very own iPod touch. This message barely took anytime for me to type up. DO WANT!

How do I make itunes recognize that I've already updated all my mp3's? Seems like the only way to do this is to delete everything from your library and import them again?

I'm a little bit concerned about the screen issues with the Touch, I don't think I am going to buy one until this is cleared up.

I think the reason you are seeing varying opinions on the Touch screen vs. the iPhone is because - as I have learned - of the various types of phone screens out there.

There is quite a difference in quality on iPhone screens.

This has not been my experience. The only differences I've noticed is in the brightness setting for the screen.

How many have you seen? With the recent issue i had i ended up looking at a lot of phones and there are some differences (even beyond the 5 and 7 model issues).

No idea how many I've seen. Quite a few at three different Apple Stores, my own model, and probably 5-10 in the wild.

Unfortunately not my experience at all, and we've seen about the same. From the multicolor hues in the camera, to the problem with blacks (one of the ones I had seen as we were trying to find a replacement for mine at the Apple Store had the blacks completely washed out, making the video portion unusable: though that is more a 'defect' than a difference.), to the brightness differences...it seemed very varied.

It seemed, from what I've looked at, to be a bigger difference when comparing earlier and older models.

Reading the article on Engadget, I think this is reflected on the comparisons people are now making with the Touch.

Keep in mind - this isn't saying they are all 'bad screens'. Not at all. Just different, which I think is noticeable when you have something to compare it with.

I got a Touch today. Best Buy had gotten 12 16GB in and I got the 4th. I will post impresssions later when I get home.

There's also reports that the audio quality isn't as good on the Touch compared with the Classic and Nano.

Last night I got to play around with the Touch and I was pushed closer to buying one, now I'm pushed further away with these video/audio quality problems.

ut oh I can still cancel my amazon order I need more impressions of this bad boy - dskittles post your impressions home boy

New firmware has been released for both the Nano and Classic. Apple states that the firmware is for bug fixes but over at iLounge, people in the forums are saying that it improves performance of coverflow making it snappier.

:o

I have noticed that Cover Flow kinda lags which sometimes has me jumping over the Album I want to select.

Let us know your results. There are some at iLounge saying they're not seeing any difference, but plenty are saying that it makes Coverflow much better.

For someone who is considering getting a $149.99 ipod nano as their first MP3 player, is there anything is particular that should make me wait for another revision, or is this good for a while until the next one is released.

Why wouldn't it be good for a while?

Is it missing something that you want? If not, then go for it. It'll be some time before they are updated again. And like all technology, you can constantly be waiting for the next upgrade. You have to buy at some point.

Hmmmm, I downloaded and updated my Nano and iTunes is telling me that my Nano is restarting (and to wait for it to reappear in iTunes) but my Nano Syncs (as if its grabbing the new firmware) and just goes back to showing that its Connected...

I tried opening and closing iTunes to make the Nano reappear but it states that its still Firmware 1.0.

*I think I got it, I dissconnected the USB Connector and plugged it back in. It brought me to a screen that had the Apple Icon and a loading bar...and yep, I'm at 1.01

there's always going to be something better eventually released down the road. If you're going to take that position, you'll never buy one.

I got to see both the classic and nano up close today, and both are really nice.. Classic seemed kinda generic though but the interface was nice though laggy.

Nano just blew my socks off.. The thing is so thin and light and small.. it was nuts.. I must say I was really really impressed, though the screen is a bit too small for my liking.

I decided I would go for the touch after playing around with an iphone and seeing how video is just much bigger on the higher screen resolution. The touch screen really is a sleek feature.

Just tested out Cover Flow on the Nano and yes, I do notice thats its much more responsive. It would kind of lag before when jumping from each end but now its consistent.

Awesome! Good to know. I'm finding it harder and harder to resist the new Classic.

Best Buy in Joliet, IL had Touch for sale today. Drooled and left it be. I will JUMP IN as soon as they offer at least a 32g version!

EDIT: Ok, post firmware update the Classic is far more responsive in Cover Flow. :D

Played around with the classic and the nano at BestBuy today, and yes.. it does seem like the hardware has trouble handling the interface. The scrolwheel would routinely skip entries on the menu when scrolling quickly, and Im assuming the interface cant redraw the selection graphic fast enough.

If this has been fixed with new firmware, then great

Every time I look at the new Nano I have to laugh when I think of iPod Fatty.

:lol :lol

A classic and supreme case of pictures not doing justice. (And not doing a good job of showing scale)

• No disk mode. We're not quite sure why this disappeared on the iPhone to begin with (cellphone data sensitivity, perhaps?), but its the same on the iPod touch and we don't like it one bit.

Wait... So I can't use it like a flash drive? I have so many files on my video iPod that I can transfer to my friends computer pretty quickly... but you can't do that with the iPod Touch?

That might be a deal breaker for me... Damn.

Someone please tell my I'm wrong...

You can't and it probably has everything to do with the fact that the iPod/iPhone are running OS X and Apple is still really hesitant about exposing that minor complication to the public. They want the device to shine as a <Insert main functionality here>, not as a <Insert generic ability it could gain by being viewed as a computer here>

The lack of a disk mode is kind of lame, but I'm wondering what Apple's data says regarding its actual use among iPod owners. Since I got my 8GB USB thumb drive, I haven't used my iPod to move files between computers at all.

seriously, disk use was a hot feature back in the first couple years of the ipod's existence when apple needed a few more hooks to sell on.

No interest in the new Creative Zen as a Nano-rival?

Were very interested in the Nano first, but after some time the hype died down within me and started looking for other alternatives.
Especially after listening to my brothers 2:nd gen Nano I just couldn't believe the lack of "sound" in Nano. My old Iaudio is miles better.

Anyway my main interest now is the new Creative Zen, which is to be released in september. a bit thicker, but many more options, way better sound, SDHC-compatible SD-slot, Xvid/Divx support, Voice recording, FM-Radio...

The 16GB-version was just reviewed by Cnet:
http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/creative-zen-16gb/4505-6490_7-32589080.html?tag=cnetfd.mt

I kind of think the Touch is also not as well represented in pictures. I finally saw one in person this weekend and even though I already see the phone, it was still impressive.

The smaller/thinner form factor combined with the touch screen was very nice. If I didn't already have the phone I would look into it.

Both it and the Nano really need to be judged in person. The Classic is about what you'd expect (the new surface still looks nice though and the 160 GB is definitely very nice. :) )

Is the Official iPod FM Tuner the product to buy? (instead of any similar 3rd party accessory?). I looked Online and there seems to be mixed reviews on the quality of the item. I do like that its both an FM Tuner and a separate control device (since I've been meaning to buy one).
