So I'm posting from my iPod touch. This thing is awesome. I have no screen darkness like some of the reviews have said so I have been fairly lucky. Everything works great and I love this thing. Godbless apple

apple.com U.S. orders are finally shipping for the ipod touch, mine just shipped :) Hopefully I got one with the good screen so I dont have to deal with returning it *crosses fingers*

You will love it. I know I love mine. The interface is amazing the sound quality is better than my old 5G Video. I don't regret buying this one bit.

Every review I've seen says the opposite of this. I bet it's so minor though that 90% of the people out there won't even notice.

What exactly makes you say the sound quality is better?

Because listening to the same songs with the same headphones sound better, clearer actually. Yesterday I was listening to a few songs on Celldweller's CD and heard nuances I never heard with my 5G.

Finally had a chance to try Ipod Touch. My first encounter with this interface, and it's really damn good.

The screen on Ipod Touch is quite crappy though. Black color looks like a negative most of the time, and anything with darker scenes (images or videos) is unwatchable on this, IMO. I've read now that this is a commonplace problem and that iPhone actually has much better screen.

What's even worse is Apple's insistence that main menu background is preset to black, and seemingly can't be changed (wallpaper shows up only on the Lock screen, WTH). Why did they chose the worst looking color for the screen to be the only main menu background preset...

Sound quality is also typical iPod crap, there's a distinct background electronic hiss that you can hear clearly through in-ear headphones on higher volume levels.

These two things have soured me on the whole iTouch experience to the point I might not get it anymore, but interface is really, really good.

Well, I am not having any of those issues. I am not denying you did experience that. But the one I bought has none of those issues, including the hiss issue. Listening to 'Year Zero', there are several silent moments and there was no hiss. My darker scenes/shadows are fine as well. Not sure if my situation is the exception or the other way around though.

See I knew this was gonna happen. As soon as i pre-order from apple store with a Oct 2-3 delivery date people are finding them in-store.
WTF indeed.

It's apparently a production issue, I'd expect it to be ironed out soon enough.

So one of my songs is randomly unable to finish. At one point or another it just skips to the next song.

Any ideas?

edit: I reuploaded it to my library, works fine - it was probably a problem with eMusic's shitty software.

I was wondering if it was possible to add old episodes of podcasts to the iTunes/iPod podcast section. A lot of the feeds I listen to only go back 10 or so episodes and it'd be nice to be able to be able to add older ones to this even if I had to do it manually.

I tried downloading and renaming an older episode and chucked it in the iTunes podcast folder but as soon as I add it to the library it recognises it as a song. Any idea if this is possible?

Thanks

Did you go into the tags for the podcast to make sure that it has the "podcast" tag applied to it? That should do it.

Also, depending on the podcast, if you unsubcribe, then resubscribe to it, you'll often get a list of all the available back episodes.

Got my 16gb ipod touch from apple.com today.

A week 38 version, perfect screen and sound.Came in a box with Macy Gray on it instead
PICT0064.jpg
Seems everyone who is getting a week 38 one is having no screen problems.

Here is a week 38 next to a week 36

Whats the serial number say? 36,37 or 38?

Some 38's also came in the other box and also some 37's are known to be fine.

I have a 37, that explains it then.

and how do you convert videos to put on the ipod?

I used this Videra converter and it became MP4, but then it says it cant be put on my ipod because it wouldent play.

It's not that all 36 and 37s are defective, infact the majority of them are most likely fine. It's just that, according to internet reports, it seems that if you get a 38 you're in the clear.

This is really tempting me to get a Touch now that the video issue has been cleared up. I'm living at home right now for my last semester in school, so money is really a non-issue right now, who knows what things will be like in a year. I guess I could just set aside $400 and tell myself not to touch it until the 32 GB Touch is released.

Yeah, the Ipod I was playing with had the screen just like that bottom one on the picture. As I said, basically unwatchable. Good to know they replaced the screen. Back on my "to buy" list :P

Yeah I did. Problem with re-subscribing is the XML feed just doesn't go that far back unfortunately

Whats the best (free) software for converting video for iPhones/iPod Touch? I used to use Videora's great software, but it's PC-only. :\

VisualHub isn't free, but it's under $25 and it kicks immeasurable amounts of ass.

My favorite Mac program.....worth every penny.

If you still don't want to pay (which you should) then use the free version, Handbrake.

Sigh, stopped by the Pentagon City Apple Store near Washington DC today, they were all out of Touches, and didn't know when they would be getting more, so I went over to the nearby Best Buy, and they said they only sell touches online. For one insane second I contemplated buying an iPhone before I came to my senses, oh well, I will have to stake out the store early tomorrow morning.

Ok that explains it, I have a 37 and my screen is just fine. Now I'm glad I wasn't able to get a iPod Touch from the first shipment that came into the Apple Store.

im going to be finding and editing my song cover art for the next 3 days I bet, this isnt fun!

But it worts every second. As soon as you see your all your library with cover art in CoverFlow, a tear will roll down your cheek. And from now on, as soon as you ad a song, get the cover art. Make it an habit.

Same here. Thank goodness I couldn't fine the first batch like I wanted to.

Although I don't have an iPod touch yet, I went through the pain of fixing up all my tags for about 40 Gb worth of mp3s. Made sure all the song title/album info was correct, all had album art, and also ran Mp3Gain on all the files to give each album a consistent loudness. It was well worth the effort, finally on my nano I get to do a shuffle and not have to readjust the volume when a louder or quieter song comes on. It's also great that everything shows up with a cover now. I can't wait to get the Touch.

I finally had a chance to play with some of the new iPods in an Apple Store while killing time on a business trip. A couple of quick thoughts:

1) The new nano is amazing from a feature standpoint, but it feels like a step backward in some ways. I also thought the interface was laggy -- and not just in Cover Flow mode. The artwork on the right side being random is also a WTF "feature." It's going to sell a ton of units, and the price for such a small, capable player is amazing...but honestly, since I don't use iPods for portable video, I would buy a 2G nano over the current model in a heartbeat.

2) The classic does nothing for me, and aside from storage space, I can't see why anyone would want one.

3) The iPod touch will obviously blow people away who haven't seen an iPhone in person, but it's very clearly a gimped product to artificially not compete with the iPhone. It doesn't have apps that could work over WiFi (Mail, other widgets, etc.) for no apparent reason. It is slimmer, but at the expense of battery life -- it gets less playback time than the iPhone. I understand why Apple has to differentiate it, but it's still disappointing.

With that being said, once they get the screen issues worked out, it will be a fine iPod. The sound quality is equal to the 5G, and the user interface is amazing. I just don't think it's as compelling a purchase as an iPhone...and I'm not sure how they will keep it differentiated from the nanos when the iPhone price starts dropping.

Since my laptop doesn't have USB 2.0 and Apple was stupid about firewire and USB 1.1, anyone have a good PCMCIA solution they could reccomend?

C'mon guys, post some pics of your new touches!

I wish they had bigger capacities but I'll still probably buy one this weekend. So weak... :(

Kinda crappy pic, but lighting was messed up:

I will take another with better lighting conditions. The screen is perfect, just my lack of light and rushing to take the pic makes it look crappy.

I just did a google search for iphone wallpapers. I found a Flickr account with a ton of them.

Posting from my touch. My thumbs are too wide. :)

Can't believe Apple also didn't include a VPN client. :(

Display is perfect. Serial number 1A737xxxxxx. I was worried, but happy now. :D

yeah I found it, so many of them.

and I cant believe how easy it is to type on the iphone even when its on the portrait mode, it is very easy to type. Only problem I had was typing TGS because it kept changing it to TVs, then I realized how to tell it to stop fixing it.

Glad you found it. I can't get to Flickr from work so I couldn't supply you a link.

I can't even see the pic I posted! lol.

the dumbest thing I found on that flickr is a wallpaper of the iphone itself.

you have to be the dumbest person alive to have an iphone as your iphone wallpaper.

That, good sir, is one kick-ass wallpaper. Can't wait for mine to arrive next week.
