I turned it into h.264 in Video converter 3 and it didnt work on my touch, I tried again with mpeg and it worked fine. I dont get it.

Handbrake works wonderfully with my 5.5G, I can't imagine why it wouldn't with the Touch.

"Small Number" of iPod Touch Screens Faulty

Thu Sep 20, 2007 3:59PM EDT

Apple has admitted that a "small number" of the screens on its new iPod Touch have trouble displaying dark images. Now let's see if Cupertino takes the next step and replaces the glitchy Touches free of charge.
In his review of the Touch, Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg notes that some "early" units of the Touch (although not his pair of review units, apparently) suffered from faulty screens; indeed, I could barely make out the dark scenes in "The Hunt for Red October" on my test Touch, and several other reviewers have pointed out the problem as well. Mossberg reports that Apple has admitted to the problems, adding that only a "small number of units" were affected and that the issue is "being remedied."

I'm glad to see that Apple has owned up to the Touch's bum screen (or at least, to the "small number" of Touches with faulty LCDs). Of course, I'd be even happier if Apple offered to replace the defective iPods for free. If you happen to be one of the unlucky few (that is, assuming the "small number" figure is correct), call Apple customer support, read the excerpt from the Mossberg review and demand a replacement; hopefully, they'll oblige.

So, Touch owners, if you use Handbrake, do you just use the iPhone presets? I ask because I have a fair amount of 4:3 content - it's legal and I have the DVD shelf to prove it - encoded for my 5.5G iPod and it's all 320x240. Is that Good Enough? What resolution should I use for 16:9 stuff?

(Assuming I have a complete breakdown of willpower and buy one.)

Kinda crappy pic, but lighting was messed up:

I will take another with better lighting conditions. The screen is perfect, just my lack of light and rushing to take the pic makes it look crappy.
Do you have that wallpaper handy? Couldn't see it in the flickr pool of wallpapers.

As for video, I'm encoding 16:9 stuff at 480 x 272. You can encode at higher resolutions but gotta save space!

Isnt that the screens native resolution anyway? No point in going highter

The screen is 480 x 320, and it can playback 640 x 480 (and other simialar higher res videos). I guess you might want it higher if you're using it for playback on both your PC and your touch.

Does the touch have a VPN client?

Nope. And no 802.1X auth support either.

The sad thing is, most universities that offer WiFi access use VPN or 802.1X, so *lots* of students are going to be disappointed. A damn shame.

You can't go past these specs for the video:

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Yeah sadly that would be the most useful area to have it for.

Is this gimping on purpose or does the iphone not have it either?

Finally found one (16GB) after scouring the Washington DC area for 3 days, first impressions are that this is absolutely the most amazing product I have ever purchased.

I will try it again later, I just used a random setting offed in the problem.

I cant believe how good Safari is on the ipod touch, I never thought internet on a handheld would be this good, but it really is. If only flash would work it would be amazing.

UK online store pre-orders from September 5th are now beign prepared for shipment by the looks of it - well mine is at least!

Still a painful wait until 4/5th Oct delivery date. Or does this change?

When mine ships at the end of this week I'll say to myself damn why doesn't adam have one of these cool as things.
Believe me, ill more than likely cave :lol

Ive been contemplating getting an ipod video for a while now and then decided to wait for the new ipods to come out. I dont see myself waiting again for what could be a long time. 16gb is just fine for my music, but its the videos that get hurt. Throw a few scrubs and ufc's on there and before you know it, its full.

...so basically the touch can't steal wifi? and the phone can? Can you have a data only plan for the iPhone and just use it for internet?

I have a problem with the new Nano. When I listen to a podcast or an audio book and it is finished it goes to the next podcast or audio book and play that one. I want that the new nano plays those like the old nano did: Play podcast/audio book stop and play nothing elsen when its finished. Is there a way to do this?

Lovin' my new 8GB Nano.
Anticipating a non-gimped iPod Touch in the future.
Same for me. I fear the red nodges me one step closer towards metrosexuality though.

The paint comes of really easy on the edges... very worried.

nope, mine does that as well.

at least with the fix it has stopped skipping through to the end of the podcast the first time you play it.

Here's an interesting development. I thought NBC said they weren't gonna put the new shows up on iTunes, yet Journeyman and Chuck are now available on the iTunes Store. A Season Pass is available for Chuck, too. Did NBC and Steve Jobs kiss and make up?

hey anyone have or know someone with an AT&T number so I can claim my $100 from apple?

willing to give $20 of it to the person or $30 if you paypal me $70 and take the $100 for yourself if you shop on itunes alot.

So, got my iPod touch. It's pretty darn sweet so far. I do have two problems though.

1. I can't seem to set my own pictures as wallpapers.
2. I bought some songs via the iTunes-store on my touch. Now how am I supposed to get those over to the computer?

1. There's nothing under Settings | Wallpaper?
2. Sync it back to iTunes. When you connect it it should upload the songs you bought back up.

1. Put the wallpaper you want as a picture in your itunes picture folder, when it syncs to your Touch. View the picture on the Touch and set it as background.

2. the next time you sync, the songs will be moved to your PC.

2. Yeah, this worked just fine.

Still no luck with the wallpapers though. I do have some pictures on the iPod but if I select them as wallpapers nothing happens.

You are aware that the wallpare only shows when you aren't doing anything and the Touch goes to sleep, right? When you hit the button to turn it on, the wallpaper will show then, until you unlock it. The background is always black when using the device.

Am I crazy for thinking that kinda defies the purpose of wallpaper? I was confused by that when I was testing Ipod Touch, and for a good five minutes I thought the functionality was simply broken. What's Apple's word on that, do they ever plan to change how wallpapers work?

Five minutes? It took me at least an hour of fiddling around with that thing and I still didn't notice.

It's all a matter of time until you decide to try locking it. Obviously I tried to lock it just to see what it looks like to unlock it, not because I was ever expecting I'll see wallpaper on that screen only. It's just completely counter-intuitive.

Presumably, in the case of the iPhone, the main screen is taken up almost entirely by icons. So if you had wallpaper in addition to that it might hinder your ability to see those. But the iPod touch barely has 2 full rows of icons, making it much more noticeable. They call it "wallpaper" but really it's just customizing the lock screen.

On the iPhone I see it a lot 'cuz I also use my phone to check the time.

No, that is how it works on the iPhone as well. That is by design. It is an Apple decision to keep the functional look the same on everyone's device. Probably in hopes of using the devices as an advertising tool. Maybe later some firmware update will change it though.

"Wait, what? NOT having our shows on iTunes means we don't get money from it?"

I am under the impression that it is NBC Universal owned shows only that apply to the ban. As a result, shows from different production companies (Warner Bros., in Chuck's case at least) are able to place their shows onto the iTunes service.

Dammit if true. House :( :( :(

After the iPods of everyone I knew died, I vowed never to buy a handheld device with a hard drive in it again. I don't think any of the 6-7 I knew of lasted much longer than 2 years.

So is this 8 and 16GB of flash memory?
