My iTouch arrives via fedex today.

What is best bitrate for vids and resolution?

My 60 gig ipod video has all vids at 320 * 240 & 900 kbps.

What is the best screen/cover for the itouch?
For slow moving shows without an abundance of colour (like the office) 512kb at 480x420 will do nicely while keeping file sizes low.

I havent experimented with other shows yet.

holy shit I love it - I might actually buy something from the iTunes Movie store as well because I'm watching the Family Guy movie from youtube and the quality is amazing - since wifi isn't everwhere I would love to watch shit on this - without the hours of encoding it.

Eh, I just make a queue in Handbrake and go to sleep. No big deal.

Dude encoding is pretty quick!

But why oh why does encoding a 480x320 video with h.264 at 800kbit NOT play on the ipod? Its within the specs.

check the fps and audio bitrate

29.97fps with an audio bitrate of 64.

FYI im using one of the appleTV profiles in video converter 3 and changing the resolution etc to accomodate (because the itouch profiles encode in mpeg4 and not h.264)

Stupid Apple store in NYC (soho one I think) is out of 16 gig Touch =(

Anyone know of any store on Manhattan, NYC that has the 16 gig Touch in stock? My parents are there now.

Apple Store in the 5th Ave. is a sure bet. I mean, it's THE Apple Store. Not having iPods in stock seems really unlikely.

Yeah, I just sent an sms to them to check the 5th avenue one. Thanks.

Damn I'm so torn right now :(

It's out of the iPod Touch and Archos 605wifi.

Both cost the same (8gb vs. 30gb).

http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/archos_605wifi/index.html

The 605wifi is just about clinching it though. Just for the fact it allows xvid and drag and drop (use it like an external harddrive), but the IPT looks wayyy cooler (yes that is important for me :/ ) seems easier to use and the screen is just lush.

Having currently a Archos 404 this is the next step for me.

So what do you guys think? Anyone have any experience with the 605?

Help me decide :)

I also have a 404, bought it a few months ago for a good deal, and although Ive hardly used it, I know its an awesome device. I love the drag and drop, the divx playback, and photo playback. The new generation seem to have even better screens, and also look slightly better. As for the sexy though, and the interface, they dont hold a candle to the Touch, which I think is expected. Functionality wise though, and flexibility wise, you cant go wrong with the archos.

Sorry to clutter this thread with my encoding dramas, but so far the audio on both episodes of house ive encoded (from the xvid) goes out of sync around about 3/4 of the way in. Using mpeg-4 at 480x320 with default audio and frame rate options in video converter 3.

How can i prevent/fix this?

Use Videora iPod converter, it's what I use. It has automatic optimal settings (with manual tweaks if you want) for the nano, classic and touch/iPhone. It's braindead easy to use and so far every video i've encoded for the nano has worked flawlessly and the converted video is pretty sharp too :)

Ok I've got a problem with my Nano, it automatically rests after a few mins of watching a video. Is this an encoding problem or do I have to change a setting on the Nano?

Edit: nvm, I just hard reset the Nano and everything is working perfectly again.

Bought an 8gig Touch in Japan yesterday. I didn't plan on buying it at all, but it was just too nice to resist. Makes for a suitable iPhone substitute.

J and R is selling it, they might have it. i went by the soho store today...they were sold out of the 16gig, but had the 8 gig, they told me to go back tomorrow.

I know what I said earlier when this was announced. Yes, I'm a hypocrite if you will.

My parents gave me an ultimatum for my 21st birthday present [after I got into an argument with them telling them I did not want anything]: "We'll buy you an expensive watch, or tell us what you want."

Obviously, I don't want or have the need for an expensive watch. I don't wear suits.

16GB iPod Touch it is :)

What can you do with 8G? Might as well get an ipod nano, it will be cheaper.

except the nano doesnt have Safari or other things I wont list about why the touch is so much more than an average media player.

Not to mention a useful screen that you can actually see something on.

Question... most, if not all of my albums do not have any artwork/album covers for them. Any easy way to get some artwork for albums? Like highlighting an album in iTunes, and then telling it to go and find the cover for said album?

"Could not find album artwork for Radiohead - Ok Computer."

LOL.

For real? Radiohead hates iTunes that much huh?

iTunes only finds album art for me maybe 1 out of 10 times. I just get mine from Amazon and apply them to my songs on my own.

I should be getting my Touch on Monday, I can't wait! Also, if anyone has an XBL diamond card and is wanting a Touch, I suggest you keep an eye on Target's website. I ordered a 16gb model and used the card to get 10% off. Total came to $385 shipped. Only $60 more than what I was going to pay for an 8gb model from Apple! :D

So my Nano died on me today, it was at full charge and all of a sudden decided to not turn on anymore no matter what I did. I plugged it into a wall charger, my PC, tried to mess around with the hold button. Nothing.

So I returned it and while at the store I tried out the touch. Jesus, I'm in love. I'm not re-buying the Nano, I'm waiting for more touches to become available. That thing is sex.

iTunes gets it album cover art from the iTunes Store. If the store doesn't have the album, iTunes can't get the cover art for you. Since Radiohead doesn't have any of their albums on the iTunes store, your gonna have to do it manually (google it, use amazon, or use buy.com/walmart.com if the amazon album cover is of crappy quality) or get a third party app to do it for you.

Another thing to note is that the "Get Album Artwork" feature will only work if your Artist & Album ID3 tags match the ones the iTunes Store has on file.

I've found that, at times, iTunes completely misses the mark. It thought it found the artwork for a Bauhaus album, but it found something that was not only not Bauhaus, but not even remotely in the same genre. And my ID3 tags are impeccable; I'm, like, clinically anal about them.

iTunes didn't get the album art for the LP/Jay-Z Collision Course CD, I tried to mess around with the ID3 tags like a dozen times and still nothing. Other than that the program has been great at getting album art for 90% of my music (it didn't get album art for stuff like Shenmue OST, but that's understandable).

does itunes still not actually add album art that it fetches to the mp3/acc files? Are they still just added to a database? I still rather google for my artwork and add it manualy for that very reason.

It must be adding them to the mp3 - because when I copy them onto an SD card, and put it in my PS3 - it loads the album art.

FYI: There is another update out for the iPod Classic and new Nano. It's suppose to improve Coverflow even further, along with improved performance in the menus, and other bug fixes.

That's good news for classic owners, I tried that out today and jesus was it sluggish as hell.

One quick Q for the american Gaffers. Are iPod Touches readily available in the US? I'm asking cause I'm going to Buffalo tomorrow on a road trip with some buddies and I might buy the 16gig touch there, it's quite a bit cheaper than in Canada and there's very little tax added on. Here it'll come up to $500 and in the US it'll be something like $415.

So I want to know if it'll be easy to find one or will it be next to impossible like here in Canada.

We have them in Canada, Futureshop had a whole bunch this morning. I went to NY yesterday and bought one for a friend's bday in Albany. It's cheaper there.

I bought mine in Bumfuck, Alabama on my way back home to Florida from Tennessee. Yeah I would say they're readily available.

My friend that works at an Apple store here in Portland said they are always sold out. So I ordered mine online.

If you order online you can get your iPod laser engraved for free.

Anyone hear anything about a remote control for a Touch? It's kind of annoying to change music while driving.

What are the chances the prices of the ipods will come down in Canada now that the dollar is over the American one? I want a new one, but I'm not sure if I should bother waiting a few months over something that might not happen.

What bit rate do you and your brother use for MP3s? What headphones were you using and what headphones were on the nano?

I have a feeling you didn't bother to take any of that in to account.
