To everyone looking for link for instructions here is the one I used, in addition to the page, you might have to scrounge around the internet for additional files. Apparently there is an easier Jailbreak method out now (hacked by a 13 year old no less), but I haven't tried it. One warning though, my Touch is a bit more crash happy now, but the increased functionality makes up for it:

PS: The MSN Chat client for iPhone/Touch is called Apollo I believe, it will be part of the installer package.

Here's the automatic (easy) jailbreak method:

Ergh, forgive me for doing this, but are the new big iPods good? I recall hearing that there were some sync issues (with album art maybe?) when they first released. Any issues still, or is it all good.

Battery life has gotten exponentially worse on my 5.5G over the past 2 weeks. It won't keep a charge for more than a day's worth (like 2-3 hours) of listening now.

Thanks, looks like it might take a while...

EDIT: trying the windows method - when i enter the ipod's ip address (which i assume i get from the network settings on the touch) it says "FATAL ERROR: Connection Error: Connection Refused."

What am i doing wrong?

EDIT 2: ok instead of using msbasher's utility (which crashed my system), i used planetbeing's utility from http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/ which is as simple as you like with a nice GUI to guide you along.

I picked up the Classic yesterday, and have only had limited experience with it so far, but I had no sync issues what so ever with it. I updated the firmware to the latest version, synced over music, video podcasts, and a few movies without any issues at all. The album art is all in place too.

do these (ipod touch) come precharged? like i dont have to do an initial charge?

my battery was full when i got it and i looked through the manual and i didn't find anything about the initial charge like my previous ipod

Apparently they do, the 8GB that I picked up last Sunday was fully charged too.

I think I'm gonna use the slovix link, thanks. Did you get all the apps available when you went through this process or did you have to go look for them?

I am considering switching back at this point, the crashing is too frequent and performance is too slow, I might wait until they release more stable hacks.

White Man, I've had a black 160gb iPod Classic for about three weeks now, and I'm in love all over again. It still has some quirks to it, but I'm sure those will be fixed in future firmware updates. Some already have been.

im actually not finding too many of the apps too useful at this point, and i cant figure out how to get mail and maps working (and ive read how to do it also).

Nice. I will probably snag one in two weeks. I'd get one today, but I have surgery next week. Even though I have really good health insurance, it is still going to cost me ~1200 bucks, so my finances are tied up. Lol America sucks.

That's one hell of a penis extension.

ipod touch is the best thing i've ever bought. wish there was more ipod touch friendly sites *coughGAFcough* - facebook is a good example of a site done fairly well... now i'm an addict to it again (damnit!)

i'm hoping a more friendly, uncrash happy method of hacking this thing surfaces because the potential is MASSIVE

either that or apple opens up to native app development *crosses fingers*

Yeah, I got 8GB touch. Amazing little device. Amazing what's all packed into such a small casing, and how easily accessible it all is.

What'ts funny is I find a lot of functionality on it more seamless and faster, more instant than how those same functions work on my computer. Itunes store especially and music and video functionality in general - it's incredible how sluggish music/video apps on PC seem in comparison. Even youtube and podcast streaming and internet in general work in instant with no hassles. You don't have to wait for any application to load, for anything to establish a connection - it just all works almost the moment you tap the screen, and even better it never even asks which connection to use, after you set them up once. When I'm in the office it uses wifi there with no asking, when I'm at home it uses the home wifi. I can only wish PSP was the same way.

You can even add some extra apps with those web-apps through Mock-dock, but I can't wait to see some new native apps, and especially games that utilize multi-touch (driving with two thumbs on screen moving up/down simulating the wheel? Arcade boxing where each thumb on screen is one fist?)

I have an iPhone and a 5G iPod for the car and an original shuffle, but can't help but stop and mess with one of the new nanos whenever I see one at a store, it's just so damn thin and amazing. I think I'm going to get my dad one for Christmas because it would be a nice upgrade for him since all he has is a nano and he was asking me the other day about how he would navigate audio books on it.

so I got custom apps working on my touch, but some programs ask me to put things on through my computer, how can I do that if it isnt recognized as a folder?

and how do I put on apps like google maps?

I'd suggest using WinSCP. In order to have access to your Touch you'll need to run the program and put in the IP address of the Touch and a user name/password (Of course while your Touch is connected via USB). Also, make sure iTunes is closed and that you manually ctrl+alt+del all other iTunes .exes. The default user name and password for all Touches is root/alpine.

Finally, after you've finished adding the programs you wanted, make sure to hit Ctrl+T while WinSCP is still open and you are still logged in. It will open a window and present you with a code box. Paste the following into that box: /bin/chmod -Rf +x /Applications/

Then you'll hit execute or ok. If you don't do that last step the applications won't work.

how do you find out the ip address and username/password?

For the ip address go into your wi-fi settings. Find the connection you are using and look for the blue circle with an arrow in it (directly to the right of your connection's name). Click that and it'll show you your ip address. The user name is simply "root" and the password is "alpine."

I was able to connect and get the files on, but when I do Ctrl T, a window pops up and I click ok, then it tries to connect but it keeps on failing.

well seems to be working even without doing the command.

Maybe this isn't the place, but when people ask about Mac OS X, and really what it offers over windows...it's that level of integration of software and hardware...and the simplicity of things 'just working'. There's nothing particularly amazing about the components or the features of most of Apple's products - but where they truly shine is the end-user experience.

Got mail, weather and maps working. I wish the weather icon displaying something other than 73 and that driving instructions worked in maps.

What are some other good apps?

I have an iTunes CoverFlow question.

What if you are going to sleep, and want to play an album as you fall alseep? This isn't possible because when in CoverFlow mode, it starts playing the next album after your current one ends, and would eventually just go through your whole music library without stopping. Any way to get around this?

Turn on the sleep timer. You should be able to find it under the clock menu.

iTunes not iPod.

You only want to play one album right? If so, just type the name of the album into the search bar, it (should) remove all other albums from the library and wont start a new album when the one playing finishes.

Dang, don't know why I didn't think of that.

I actually searched this question on Google, and the page I found no one suggested this. Thanks dude.

I don't know why, but I used to be kind of anti-Cover Flow. I just starting using it today and actually really like it. Can't wait for Finder Cover Flow in Leopard.

When I want an album in iTunes I just type the name of it in the search box, I find it is the fastest way to get to an album I want to listen to. If you leave the album name in the search box, iTunes will continue to only display that album. Do this, and once it finishes the album it'll stop.

Edit: Beaten, duh.

I'm totally split between style over convenience. Touch Vs Classic. 8GB Vs 80GB.

:(

As always, the "one device" is the one that I have with me pretty much all the time. I also have a traditional iPod that sits in the car most of the time just in case there is something that I want that isn't on the iPhone. Even on those days when I'm traveling and I find myself away from my larger capacity devices, to be honest I just never find a need to take 6 billion songs around with me. I never have THAT much time to be listening to them. When I'm on a plane, I'm listening to music on my MacBookPro while writing code or playing NintendoDS, or reading. Any other time (like waiting in a doctor's office) I simply don't have an excess of time to spend listening to music - so I carry around 12-25 albums I might want to listen to, a whole lot of podcasts, and one or two movies and I still have several gigs free on the iPhone.

So far the capacity hasn't really hurt me. But then again - I don't see the point in carrying around a lot of audio in the first place.

Alright, I put a compilation album on my iPod, and the cover shows once PER TRACK in cover flow now.

How do I tag these things? I have Album Artist as the name of the compilation, and the individual artists in the artist field.

Sorry guys, I searched this topic but couldn't find it :(

I remember someone posting a link for a site that has a database for loads of mp3's found around the net (ipod friendly) I can't remember the name of the site for the life of me.

Would be very greatful if someone could post it again.
Thanks.

P.S. Any other cool websites like this that are touch friendly

You probably just need to select the entire Album in iTunes, do a Get Info on it, and check the "Part of a Compilation" box (under Info). That should fix it.

Are you talking about SeeqPod?

Sweet site. I'm looking to get a Touch, but I haven't bought an iPod to this point because I need an FM tuner. Is there anyway to get the radio to work on the touch?

Apple dropped FireWire support for transferring files. Since not enough Windows users had FireWire, they dropped the support because people bitched that they had to buy a USB cable. Now I have to use USB2.0 which is fucking 10x as slow as FireWire. Thanks Joe Six Pack!

Ugh. 1800+ songs transferring via USB2.0. I hate you Windows user.

Are you sure your motherboard actually supports USB2.0? USB2.0 and Firewire are pretty close in speed. I think Firewire is still faster somewhat in real life tests, but nowehere even close to 10x. More like 50% at most, and less than that on average.

I bought this 2.66GHz MacPro back in July... so yes, it supports it.

I also see a huge decrease in speeds when i moved from my 3G (firewire) to 3G nano (usb 2.0). Could it be the controller on the device itself limiting the speed, rather than USB 2.0 speeds (because I had read that the speed was quite similar between both bus systems). In any case, it wasn't much of a pain save for the first sync.
