What bit rate do you and your brother use for MP3s? What headphones were you using and what headphones were on the nano?

I have a feeling you didn't bother to take any of that in to account.

I tried the cowon with the same files as the ipod, and i tryied both devices with both pair of stock earphones.

and the cowon, even with the lower quality earphones, raped the phat nano.

for those who know/care:

mp3 320kpbs 44khz lameenc novbr no normalizing

What are the chances the prices of the ipods will come down in Canada now that the dollar is over the American one? I want a new one, but I'm not sure if I should bother waiting a few months over something that might not happen.

If this helps, they actually DID come down in price over the past week or so, although not on Apple's site. I don't know about the Classic/Touch, but the Nanos dropped $10 (4GB) and $20 (8GB) respectively, and the Shuffle took a dive down to $80 as well.

Yeah, I think after a while the touch/classic will also drop in price. Oh well, if I get a touch tomorrow in the US it won't matter.

Apple is annoying me.

I got a new iPod Classic 160gb today (Last one broke and Best Buy junked it out,) and now I need to upgrade iTunes to use it, but I can't DOWNLOAD the new iTunes, because Apple is upgrading their site.

Ever heard of a mirror?

What? Everything is fine on the site.

Weird...

I found it on another site with Google, so let their site act screwy for me for all I care.

But now I need another case, because the Classic is thicker than the iPod Video.

What the fuck do people do with 160gigs of space? That's bigger than my laptop drive.

I'm not trying to question your purchase, what you buy is none of my concern, this is just a general Q.

If you rip all of your stuff in lossless, 160 GB isn't even enough.

Ugh, I just saw an iPhone commercial where they imply that you no longer need BOTH a camera and a phone because this product COMBINES THEM! What convenience! :lol

I haven't seen it, but I'll believe it. As much slack as I give Apple on a lot of things, because their strides in UI are genuinely good, the iPhone is the manifestation of their iPod-boom hubris.

It's going to bite them in the ass if they don't throttle it back.

I saw those new commercials today as well. In that one the guy claims he use to carry his iPod, camera, cell phone, and a second cell phone for e-mail and messaging. I love my iPhone, but damn that was a stupid commercial. Seriously, does someone actually have a second cell phone for texting/e-mail? I guess maybe a cell phone for calls and a blackberry for those other functions?

The commercials in question (they're 3 new ones). They're far from great, but they're fine. The guy that carries all the devices one is a pretty legitimate one; he's just saying he used to carry a camera, a phone, an iPod, etc. and now he has them all in one device...that's certainly part of the appeal about it.

So I got my iPod Touch from Buffalo yesterday, I've been messing around with it for a while now and I love it. It's the most amazing product I've ever purchased.

Quick Q, what's the easiest way to test the screen for the negative black problem? It's a week 27 machine but had Macy Gray on the cover.

Have you updated the firmware to 1.1.1? If so, it is suppose to correct issues with the screen.

I've never heard Cowon, but audio quality on all Ipods really pretty much sucks, if you listen through any good headphones/earphones, especially if you like to play it a little louder. That's an unfortunate, but a well known fact. I've heard that old Shuffle apparently had much better sound quality than any Ipod before or after it, but never had one to test.

Maybe Apple will turn that around one day, they still didn't, but at least now they have option to buy higher quality encoded songs, so at least it shows they are paying attention to that kind of stuff. It's a shame really when you look at something that feels so advanced like Ipod Touch and then it still has that crappy sound quality. I still want one though...

Well, another 2 weeks with the 160gb classic and 1 firmware update later, and my impressions of the 6th gen are getting more positive.

Cover flow is still pretty useless though. THEY NEED to at least allow the option to sort cover flow by album, instead of by artist. Enabling compilation support simply isn't enough.

And I have a solution for my iSkin eVo3. I kept the plastic wrap around the iPod classic, only cutting out the top and bottom sides of the wrap, improving airflow and freeing up the top and bottom ports. But I left the plastic wrap around the sides, front, and back of the iPod. Then I cut out the thin silicone layer of the iSkin eVo3 that protects the scrollwheel (without compromising the rest of the case) and fitted the plastic-wrapped iPod inside. Everything (plus the screen) is protected by the iSkin, minus the scrollwheel which is only protected by thin plastic that the iPod came wrapped in.

Not the ideal solution, but it's better than nothing until some decent cases start coming out.

It was already at that firmware out of the box.
So, a week 37 in the macy gray box and the current firmware already?

Is that even possible?

Mine didnt have the current firmware and its a 38.

I'm serious, first thing I did was try to upgrade the firmware in iTunes and it said I have the newest version of the firmware already installed.

I think it's actually a totally fair statement to make and a reasonable commercial, except that people who actually need a texting/email-oriented device probably wouldn't be able to replace them with the iPhone. The keyboard is really only competent horizontally, and I don't think anything but the web browser supports horizontal keyboard orientation.

I think the commercial is reasonable as well, even though I was the one who posted on it. I just questioned people carrying two cell phones. That seemed a bit odd.

As for the keyboard, I have to disagree with you. I can type quite fast on it in either orientation, and it really is pretty great once you get use to using it.

I've only had the phone for about two weeks. I don't know how much of a learning curve there is.

I know tons of people, largely professionals, with two cell phones, though. I thought that was relatively common practice.

I don't know anyone who carries two cell phones any more. They've replaced them with Blackberries and similar devices over the past few years. It's not like convergence devices are a new thing.

Keyboard learning curve, for me, wasn't that long. maybe a week or so. But when I really started to pick-up speed was when I learned to trust the built in spell checker/word suggestions. It's pretty powerful and accurate. Especially the more you use it.

I was just going to random gadget blogs and noticed that the touch now has things like the nes games and google maps on it.

how do you do this?

Not that hard, I did it and the whole process takes about an hour, it's long but not really complicated if you are a moderately experienced computer user. It involves the installation of some hacking tools, but no firmware flashing so there is no danger of bricking your device. Just do a search on google for "Jailbreak ipod touch". Why do you want to sort by album so bad? Coverflow is supposed to simulate looking through a CD collection. If someone has their CD collection nicely organized, they're going to have it sorted by artist, not by album.

Is it really that hard for you to think of which artist performs an album that you want to listen to and go through coverflow to that artist then find the album?

Or do you have a lot of classical music or something that's hard to find by artist?

To put it simply, Apple shouldn't be assuming they know how people want to sort their music. You can sort Coverflow by song in iTunes. It may not be a good idea, but the option is there. My own preference leads me to just type in an artist name in the search field, and then sort by album title.

Capslock, can you access Maps even if you aren't connected to WIFI? Could you for example bring up a map while at home and then use the Touch in the car to guide you on your route?

The way I look at it, Coverflow is pretty much a huge novelty anyways, so if it doesn't work the way you want it to, just search by song the normal way.

Coverflow has always just come off to me as a cool, but ultimately useless and flashy way to find the music you want to listen to.

Yes it is extremely easy to go back to the regular touch firmware. Simply hitting restore when you have your ipod connected to itunes does the trick.

Check out the ipod touch forums on the mac rumors forums for more info.

If you mean google maps, then yeah, I just tried it, you just have to load it up with wifi first, then you can turn it off.

Yeah you can do it on pc too.

iJailbreak is out now - an automated jailbreak app for OSX

The additional apps really are a great addition - although they should really have been there in the first place

Now to figure out how to re-arrange the icons on my springboard

Holy shit, is there a native msn messenger program for the iPod touch yet?

Edit: Could you tell me what site you used, there's a lot of methods out there and I'm scared to try some of them. Also where can you get the various apps from?

With my newly posh Apple store employee discount, I'm considering joining the dark side and getting an iPhone. The thing is, that keyboard. I can type on my Blackberry Pearl pretty fucking fast (most people think I'm on a computer, using AIM or something), and sacrificing that speed for a gorgeous media player and a portable HTML browser is really making me sit down and think.

I don't really have much trouble typing with the on-screen keyboard on my iPhone, though I do use one finger typing when I'm typing in the vertical position. I found putting an anti-glare screen on my iPhone made it easier to type actually since my finger doesn't slip as much.

wow seriosly considering selling my iphone and getting the 16gb (since I live in Canada and data plans are hella expensive)

Dropped by the Apple Store today for work, but had that $100 iPhone credit burning a hole in my pocket, so I picked up a 160 GB iPod Classic. It's charging at the moment, then I'll sync it up and play with it some. Looking forward to loading it up with music and videos.

It joins my 2nd Gen Nano and iPhone in my stable of iPods. :lol It's going to be great for traveling with that awesome battery life.

capslock got a link? All the google search return like "the shit is coming soon" type posts :/

Thats fucking sick looking. I want to try that now.

And i second the question about an msn app.

Fuck. I want to know how to do that shit on my iPod Touch! When I google I get a bunch of different possibilities, it would be nice if I could get one specific thing to look for.
