It's killing me, I keep jumping back and forth. 80 Gig classic, or 16 gig touch.

Same here.

I like the look of the Classic more than the one of my 30GB 5.5G, and it's even thinner (only 0.5mm, but still). And then I watch the presentation of the Touch and DAMN, THIS LOOKS SO SLEEK!

But $537 (that's how much it costs here in Switzerland, tax included) for 16GB, I don't know...

When are they going to make games for the iPhone/Touch line?

EDIT: Or I suppose we could play flash games off Safari?

This is why i am kinda pissed at sony. They have the portable games + PMP in the PSP, now they need to make it touchy and smaller, add 16gb across the board and bam, ipod touch vs PSP and PSPhone vs iphone.

Does the iPod Touch and Classic fit on all existing docks? I have a Clock/Dock thing and I dont want to have to buy a new one

You also get a pocket-sized WiFi tablet.

How exactly is the internet on the iPhone? I'm plenty satisfied with my 5G but I am seriously considering trading up because of the internet functionality. I know there's no flash but you can still access youtube. Can I access googlemaps(the website)?

iTunes 7.4 changes:

Preferences re-ordered (Apple TV and iPhone at the end)
Play Video options (Full screen, seperate window, etc.) now added for Music. I don't understand.
Edit:
Also, Closed Captioning is mentioned all over. Nothing I have from the store seems to show any text.

The iPod Touch still sounds good to me. Luckily my parents are going to NYC in october so I won't be totally ass raped by the Euro-price.

the price drop on the iPhone has just confirmed my purchase of said product this holiday season. Just gotta wait out my verizon contract that ends in 2 months.

Come on... come on...

I am quite tempted by the Touch... though I was originally planning on getting the 2nd gen Nano (8GB) for jogging purposes. Now that I think about it though, I would probably prefer just jogging without music.
Now the question is whether to get the Touch this year or wait until next year and get it (or the iphone if released in Canada) along with a Macbook Pro (or slim, again if released) together with the ADC student developer discount.... :D

Only setbacks with the Touch for me is the possibility that podcasts cannot be directly bookmarked and streamed (ala PSP), no built in radio tuner (though I don't really listen to radio anyway), and 8GB not being enough if I were to store more videos (planning to get the base model).

The guaranty still works if you buy your iPod stuff in the US, but you live in Europe, right?

Yeah, Apple's warranty on portable devices is world wide.

And damn, those new iPod Classics look good on the promo shots, but hideous in "real" shots, the new iPod Nanos look ridiculously shitty on both and the iPod Touch has too little storage :( Guess I'll just keep my old 5G and get the 3G iPhone once it hits Europe this fall.

Hmm, the new video performance in iTunes is little improved (not so much screen tearing for me now), but it's still garbage. And how the hell do you get back to a video after you close down the window but the song keeps playing in the background!? iTunes 8 better streamline everything; it's fucking ridiculous how they've still got like three different styles for all the buttons and volume control bars.

The new iPods look hideous. The capacity on the Classic is insane, but that's about it. I'd probably be excited for the Touch if I could afford it. :(

Are there any videos out there showing how the new nano/classic navigation works? It looks so awkward with all the pictures cut in half.

Notes & Maps would have been nice on the touch but theyre not a deal breaker. Hopefully it will end up being hacked pretty quickly to allow custom apps like the iPhone.

After a long internal debate...I've got to go with the Classic. Definitive version of the click-wheel iPod. I'll upgrade to Touch when the storage catches up to my needs. It's going to be hard...but I have to.

...or do I? GOD WHY MUST THE TOUCH BE SO FUCKING COOL?

Can someone maybe answer this question for me? I like my current iPod (5G) because in my pocket, I can feel for it and click the bottom edge of it to pause music, or L/R to skip songs. I'm assuming this can't be done with the touch, yes?

The iPhone doesn't support Flash and as far as I know, the iPod touch won't either. Why you ask? Because Apple don't want developers to have access to the platform, and that includes Macromedia/Adobe. Sigh.

Wuh-oh. After syncing my iPhone with iTunes 7.4 my iToner ringtones went bye-bye. Didn't happen with the previous version of iTunes. It has the Ringtones tab but of course the whole ringtones thing won't be enabled until next week.

Kinda glad I didn't pay the $15 for iToner yet. :D

Weird, my iTunes does NOT have a ringtones tab, and my iFuntastic (2.0) ringtone still lives. Maybe it's because I have a 1.0 iPhone?

Is that with the new tax on mp3-players that came into force this month here? Apple couldn't have chosen a worse time for releasing new iPods as far as the population of Switzerland is concerned.

Safari is outstanding on the iPhone. It's the best mobile browser I've ever used. I'm typing on it right now of course.

I actually only feel like the notes and google maps are the only two things I care about.

The notes is shit. When Leopard comes out (if you are a Mac user) it will sync with Mail I assume, but now it's fairly useless (and ugly as hell as it uses Comic Sans).

Another comment- if you are on the fence about the touch vs. the Classic, I say go for the touch unless you absolutely require the insane amount of space. I can't emphasize enough what a jump it is from the old interface to the Touch style for the iPod.

I don't think that is it. Flash is a resource hog in OS X, and it would bring the iPhone to its knees.

iPod classic with 80GB or iPod Touch with 8GB? :x

I have about 30GB of music. :(

Goddamnit, I could afford both, but just thinking about it, WAAAAAAAHH! Apple hypnotized me to give them my money. :(

30gig of music <-> iPod touch with 8gig ==> does not make sense
80gig iPod Classic is nice, but somehow I sense you've already got a 30 or 80gig iPod from previous generation..no? :)

Some people tend to forget that you don't have to buy one everytime they announce a new gen. :P

I hate these threads. It's always hard to see what was announced, and what wasn't.

Could someone update the title/Op with all this information, please?

I currently only have the 4Gb nano, so the touch up to 16Gb would actually be a huge increase in storage for me, considering I feel I carry around alot of music currently. The damn interface is so cool with the touch, how can I not get one?

So i ordered the silver 80GB classic. The iPod touch does nothing for me. I will get a touch iPod anyway, when i will buy the iPhone once it comes to Europe.

Or you could, you know just make the dangerous treck to www.apple.com and find out for yourself.

Is the display of the 6G exactly the same as the one of my 5.5G?

Screen is, UI isn't. UI looks nice too.

50 extra gigabytes and a shiny new UI isn't enough to make me want to trade up from mmy 5.5G though.

Is flash really that resource heavy? I mean the iPhone/touch have the power to run OSX for petes sake, and doesnt the PSP browser support flash? It doesnt seem impossible, flash apps on a portable touchscreen could be badass.

Quick Q for iPhone owners, do embedded quicktime videos in websites work in safari?

Flash isn't resource heavy, its just that the port to OSX is poorly written and needs heavy optimization. Take it on more than faith that Adobe is aware of this and you may see some massive improvements - perhaps even by MAX (Adobe's big conference at the end of September).

A resource hog? I'm no expert, but if it can decode H.264 and MPEG4, I don't see how Flash would "bring the iPhone to its knees".

I own a Nokia 770 Internet tablet, which has a crap 250 mhz CPU, yet supports Flash. It's slow, but it works. I'm pretty sure that the iPhone, which has a CPU 2-3 times faster AND 3d acceleration could play Flash animations quite well.

Oh so Flash isn't the problem, but OSX's Flash implementation is. I see.

Think of how bad the PSP browser is, overall. Safari on Lite OS X is incredibly fast, and Flash would slow it down.

It will also suck battery life. From what I have read Flash is way more resource intensive on OS X than Windows.

Hah! Resistance is futile!

Oh yeah I was reading on Engadget, apparently the iPod touch shares the exact same SDK as the iPhone so even if Apple don't officially port the missing apps like email those hacker dudes should be able to do it for them. God bless those hacker dudes.

Embedded QT works just fine. In fact, Apple even has a special iPhone version of their movie trailers site.

The videos load up relatively quickly too, especially over WiFi.
