Apple Event 9/12: Phones, Watches, TV, and More...It's Hardware Time!

I knew when the iPhone X was priced at $999 last year that would be the new norm...and looks like I was right. That being said these phones seem pretty badass so maybe it's worth it considering how much people use their phones these days....

XR seems alright too....especially considering it's $250 less and still getting the A12 chip...

iPhone Xs can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes...that's new I think?

Granted, the fine print says that's using the USB-C charging block (which this iPhone doesn't ship with).

I'm underwhelmed, to be honest. Feels a lot like your standard incremental steps for a lot of money. The Apple watch seems alright but I worry a bit about a company having all this medical data.
All this neural network and ML buzztalk is a bit aggravating, however. It's not as revolutionary as Schiller et al. claim. There is still a lot of research to be done. Altough, admittedly, my knowledge about ML stuff is specialised in computer graphics.

All the medical data is locally stored in the watch/phone and encrypted. Apple's not doing anything with the medical data aside from capturing and storing it locally.

You can choose to have it backup in iCloud, but you don't have to.

I like what they're doing with the cameras except for that notch. I loathe the notch on this iPhone. I loathe the notch on other phones.

I dont have an Iphone but I imagine the notch eventually just kinda fades into the background over time? And google phones are copying the notch anyways LOL.

I just like that they got rid of the chin. Perfect phone for me would have no chin and small bezel on top for the camera etc... so this way you have no notch and no chin.

This is actually the first year that I probably will go mid-range on the storage space.

I just checked and I'm using 75GB of the 256GB I have...and a solid 20GB of that could easily be dumped if I wanted to.

I can't even imagine how I'd come close to hitting over 256.

Hands-on:

Note: he mentions the display is 120Hz refresh rate....which is not true. The touch layer is 120Hz.

So what does the R stand for in XR?

I know technically it probably stands for now thing, but ostensibly it usually refers to something.

I believe C stood for colour from the 5C. I think S stood for many things but they usually refer to something like speed or Siri.

Reduced edition? Retard pack?
One can buy a good mid range laptop for the 512gb Xmax wow...and there are people who buy such phones every two years wow.. Apple is making easy money.

I hope the next consoles pack in as much foe 499 if people are willing to pay for a phone.

I think the new Apple Watch with EKG and fall detection is genius. Now everyone will be buying their grandma/grandpa an iWatch (and maybe an iPhone to go with it as well).

If it actually does reliably detect atrial fibrillation, it is very impressive.

Millennials - housing is too expensive! Noone can afford that!

Also millennials - I'm so upgrading from last years phone to this new one!

Still waiting for the SE successor... These X phones are just too big for me...

Yep. Went from a samsung S7 to an iPhone SE recently and couldn't be happier. I loved it to go back to a smaller size.
Also don't miss anything in speed for basic stuff I use it for.

Is it possible that they will show a successor at the next event together with the new ipad's?

Who knows? There have been rumors floating around about an SE2 for quite some time now. I hope Apple doesn't ditch the smaller sized phones because I don't want a bigger one - but I also don't want a different brand....

Like the new phones, but in no hurry to upgrade. Still rocking the 6s, changed the battery last winter and it's still working great. Usually buy a new one when the old one slows down significantly or I break it. God knows I've dropped my phone a million times but it's still kicking. Probably waiting until next summer, if my phone holds up.

ECG is coming later this year and it's limited to the US only. So if you're outside the US you are out of luck as it needs approval before being enabled.

Funny how the intro video showed AirPods with Hey Siri support yet we got no mention, that and Apple scrubbed away all traces of AirPower from their website (+ according to loads of media representatives, all Apple employees refused to acknowledge or talk about it even off records).

My ex literally just shared an Instastory detailing that she actually watched the entire keynote. She constantly buys new Iphones and just had her Iphone 7 replaced with an 8 and i reckon she will upgrade it again to one of these models now.

What she does with it?

Selfies and selfie videos.

Because apparently you need a 1000 dollar phone for that. Oh no wait, she needs it for that one time she uses the superslowmo function.

Coming from someone who never has bothered watching keynotes before, its kind of scary to see this level of adoration to a brand.

After looking at them, I still don't understand people who watch videos on an X display... you either have a notch or a smaller screen than your paying for.

The "upgrade" isn't much, nor is it worth $1000.... And $749 for the XR when it could have been $500 easily, seems way too excessive, especially with other phones being a lot less than these phones and being almost the same it confuses me.

I'm just starting the keynote, did anyone notice in the opening scene, everyone is so fat, including the audiences and the staffs... what's wrong Apple?

Reminds me of the note 9. A beast phone, the best one out there, but just not a big enough leap from last years model to pay the huge price tag. If you are rocking a 2 or 3 year old Iphone then jump in, but if you have last years model I don't see anything enticing to pay 1000+ or whatever.

Also 64GB? Thats lame for the Max. Its supposed to be a premium top of the line phone and they can't even give you 128 GB as entry. Its like buying a Maserati and it coming with cloth seating. I get it for the other phones you want a cheap entry point, but for your most expensive line class it up a bit.

The only thing that I like is that apple has the biggest screen out there since I like big phones.

Honestly the A12 processor in the XR is so far ahead of anything from any other manufacturer that it makes sense why it isn’t priced like an Android. The very best Android processor can’t even compete with the 1 year old A11 yet.

People expecting any phone from apple to be priced like an Android had unrealistic expectations from the start.

I love how the budget model is still 449 bucks. For an Iphone 7.

Why the heck would i ever need a 450 euro phone?

To put in perspective, and consider me an edge case: My first phone, and Android 4.2 device, i bought for 90 euros. That's right, 90. Sure, i had a low res screen, but it was as large as the biggest Iphone and it did everything i wanted. 2.5 years later it finally wore down (And i am very careful with my hardware.. its why stuff lasts as long as it does) and i had to look for another one.

I found a Wileyfox Spark+ with Cyanogenmod, and paid 100 for it. New, that is. I went from 32 bit to 64 cores and to an actual modern OpenGLES 3 based GPU with a 720p screen. Runs PUBG like a champ and i can do everything with it. Wileyfox had the extra advantage that it supports their hardware pretty good. I went from Cyanogen Android 6.0 to 6.1, and then i got an update to Android 7, customized. Got some patches for that aswell but for now i am on Android 7. And you know? That's fine. The fact that Wileyfox is the only budget manufacturer in my country that does upgrade paths for their machines is what threw me into buying it.

Now Apple has legendary support, but the prices they ask - Completely utterly insane. And that's without Itunes.

An Android is easily similar to the it just works mentality, for everyone but the elderly.* Heck, i reckon an Android is even more versatile since it plays nicely with Windows. Not on a Iphone where you need Itunes to do literally anything.

*The Elderly love Apple hardware because it literally does everything for them.

So clearly, im an Android man, and i dont hold anyone against it for wanting to go with Apple. They are beautiful machines, pristine, it just works.. and their camera's are pretty amazing. If there is one thing i like about Iphones, its their camera. But they are also premium items, and i prefer to tinker with my OS without having to rely on a master program. I can do that with Android, i plug it in Windows and it works. I can't do that with Apple, nor am i willing to shell out 450 euros at minimum to do what i want to do with it and no, superslowmo is not a thing i find worthy of that money. Let alone having SD card support.

That isnt to say Android is flawless either - I absolutely despise the shared memory system they introduced in 7. Either make your SDcard like your internal memory but it won't be seeable in Windows nor useable without reformating. That and the inability to move things to SD is completely moronic. I don't want to merge my SD card with the internal memory, but because i don't want to do that, i am punished by not being able to move stuff over to SD card. Which is completely stupid in my opinion. If anyone knows of a carefree non-rootable way to push shit to SD, please let me know.

I found that highly entertaining. You have multiple 256 GB phones now, even 512 GB... but their top end is just 64 GB. And you cant extend that space either because hey, why provide SD card support amirite. Or a 3.5mm jack. Iphones are literally interactive jewelry, its a statement piece.

And sorry, i don't buy phones to make statements.
Yeop, that's the dumbest part. It's literally just impulsive spending.
I forgot to mention that she bought an Iphone 8 last year, replacing an Iphone 6 that still worked perfectly. And she's already considering an Iphone XS just for those reasons alone. Its absolutely nuts. Why the F do a cheezy upgrade from Iphone 6 to 8 and then are considering to replace that 8 again within the year.

Add in that she also had her HP Envy Windows 10 replaced with a Macbook Pro i believe. Its crazy.

It does not hold for every Apple user out there obviously but that is an textbook case of Elitism and Insecurity.

The 512GB XS Max is $1999 Canadian...

Does it come with a free blow job/clitoral stimuli? Cause at that price, I could fucking travel somewhere nice and secluded!
I also expect breakfast in bed and recital of Tolstoy's War and Peace while massaging my feet and telling me I am a great person to uplift my spirits, when they are down.

That sure was disappointing - even the "budget" phone is more expensive than most of Android flagships

and the only other product the showed was another pointless watch.

I think the new Apple Watch with EKG and fall detection is genius. Now everyone will be buying their grandma/grandpa an iWatch (and maybe an iPhone to go with it as well).

If it actually does reliably detect atrial fibrillation, it is very impressive.

Good luck making sure your grandparents are charging their smartwatches each evening.

Is it confirmed? I'm interested but can't shake the feeling they're going to ditch it.

Did you mean to ask if a new Mac mini is confirmed? If so, Yes. During the “We promise we’re coming out with a traditional Mac Pro” talks sometime mid last year they stated they’re also working on a new Mac mini. During these talks they spoke about the usuage of their Mac mini users and stated most use them for Apple Pro apps and iOS development. They stated the Mac mini is not dead and will be getting a revamp of some kind. Recent rumors is a Mac Mini “Pro” of some kind is coming and that it will be more expesnvive then the current Mac mini.

I think Apple should have a video dock (like Samsung) for these new phones. If they are going to charging laptop prices, buyers should get the option to use it as one. A12 soc probably is faster than many budget laptops.

Quite underwhelmed to be honest, especially with the XR. Where i live it's almost 900€ so that screen, which by and large seems not very far in terms of quality from the one in the 8 (so this means good in general, not up to par with similarly priced devices), is basically a dealbreaker. The Xs price is basically nonsensical and I think that not even carriers can make a case for its purchase for anyone who is sensible with his or her money, and I speak as an enthusiast.
Apple Watch's functionality is super cool but not available in Europe (and I wouldn't say injustifiably so) and still, that price... yikes. Maybe it's because I live in what amounts to basically a failed state waiting to happen and so the inflation of the prices really isn't in line with the growth of salaries, still...

Thanks for the info. I totally missed that somehow and thought it was just speculation. Hope they give some specs soon.

Their prices getting higher with every iteration is the reason I switched to an Android phone. It has been a year now, and I'm pretty happy with my 400-dollar phone.
