Apple iPad revealed

Eh, I have some coats with some big interior pockets, but you're right likely not 8-inches wide. It almost looks like he pulls it out of his waistband, looking at it again. *shrug* Whatever!

After playing around with the Nook I am now hoping the iPad is better for e-book reading. If it can do this better than the shitty nook, I may buy one.

Realistically, not a chance in hell.

Well looking at Apple's patents there seems to be plenty of interest in touchscreen tech in the Mac space.

I know that you can never predict what's going to happen next (especially with a company like Apple) but I wouldn't be surprised if something like that is down the line especially to resurge desktop computer sales.

A Twister app would sell millions! The ultimate killer app.

It will likely be a large touchpad to plug into your computer, enabling a full suite of multitouch gestures.

Why anyone would build a touchscreen desktop computer for general computing is beyond me. Your arms would get tired in about 15 seconds.

I see all these HP/Acer touchscreen iMac ripoffs, and I can't help but wonder... why ?

It actually wouldn't be a bad thing to have for kiosks, interactive satations etc,

there has never really been a platform for this type of thing in libraries, civic centers, Dmv etc. Anyone would have to create thier own solution.

running osx with an iPhone OS overlay that a company could easily devolop custom apps for could be really nice. I agree it doesn't make sense for home or business use.

New report that Apple Stores are getting iPad training March 10, to be in stores March 26. I dunno about the validity of their source...seems like a random blogger. But, ya never know.

Apple Stores will get iPads on March 10th, customers on the 26th?

The Examiner has a pretty interesting iPad story for us today. According to their sources, the iPad will reach Apple Stores for employee training on March 10th. On March 15th, the television commercials (remember the one filmed in a diner in California?) will air. Then on March 26th, iPad sales will open to the public of the Wifi version. 3G versions will follow in late April or May.

That all seems to mesh with us and we've heard repeatedly that the release date would be March 26th, barring any unforeseen delays. They conclude with this little tidbit: People who camp out for the iPad lauch will receive a "special gift."

I'm not fucking camping out. No. No. No. But, I'll be excited if I can pre-order one (either for shipment or for in-store pickup).

numble said:
16 days of training? In the past, Apple had a ton of Day One releases, so I doubt that report...

Not 16 days of training but a training session on the 10th (one day), then it'll be in stores later in the month.

if it was PC compatible I'd buy one for work. I get hand cramps these days using a mouse all day.

It baffles me that these have never taken off. I have one plugged into an old laptop and I can play any mouse-intensive game and browse the internet with my arm completely stretched out and supported by couch cushions. I just wish they made a wireless one without the giant puck receiver.

Looks like that report of production problems or cut shipments is wrong. Woo-hoo!

iPad Suppliers Dispute Claims of Shortages at Launch

Earlier this week, research analyst Peter Misek of Canaccord Adams claimed that a "manufacturing bottleneck" at Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn/Hon Hai Precision would result in constrained supplies (300,000 versus a rumored planned 1,000,000) of the iPad at its launch later this month. The report had also suggested that the shortages could be severe enough to result in a delayed launch, although an Apple spokesperson quickly denied that claim.

DigiTimes today reports that Foxconn's suppliers for the iPad are seeing no changes to their delivery of components for the device and expect that Foxconn will be able to ship 600,000-700,000 units this month and an additional one million units next month.

"In response to reports that initial volumes of Apple's iPad in late March will be lower than originally planned and the launch will be only in the US market because production by Foxconn Electronics has been delayed, Foxconn's component suppliers have said their supplies are on schedule and Foxconn should be able to ship 600,000-700,000 iPads in March and one million units in April."

While Foxconn refused to comment on the reports, supplier sources also confirmed that there should be no launch delay for the device.

Hopefully the iPad will be in plentiful enough supply to dissuade wannabe eBay flippers from getting in the lines. (It'll never completely get rid of them but let's hope it cuts their numbers.)

Good news! :) Hopefully we'll have no problems getting them now, and my girlfriend has jumped on the bandwagon and wants one badly too. I think she might be as happy as I am to hear this. :D

OMGOMGOMG I'm back in this thread! I know you're all excited too!

BTW, now I want, nay NEED to buy an iPad for myself! Yes, that's right. You heard me. Let me tell you how I came to this realization:

It was Starbucks Santa Monica, couple of Sundays ago. I was doing some concept/ideation sketches for work on my Tablet PC. The project required a bunch of reference stuff, and I was going back and forth from reference on the web, and Painter X window. It was obnoxious. I also had some print outs of the reference so I ended up getting those out of my backpack and spread them all over the table. A big mess.

I was thinking at that point, "Boy, wouldn't it be great if I had a light, thin and large screen slate with good battery life that I can put all my reference stuff on so that I can just keep the Painter open on my Tablet PC while I sketch..." And then it hit me like a ton of bricks: "HOLY SHIT, I NEED THE iPAD!!!!".

That's right. The iPad would be the perfect support device for my Tablet PC! I can keep all the reference and web stuff going on it, and concentrate all the sketching on the Tablet PC! It's too perfect! A genius solution! It's almost as if Steve Jobs made the iPad for me and me alone for this exact purpose!!

As soon as iPad hits $200, it's mine. :D

:lol Good to see you, Shoggy. You know, they were talking about this on TWIT this week, how a lot of different personal use case scenarios will add up to a lot of sales.

Good to see you too!

BTW, you guys are taking my comment the wrong way! I'm saying that Apple built in a lot of room for price reduction on the iPad (there was a report about that). So I think it will be easy to find an iPad for $200 in short amount of time! It won't be from Apple, but I think it will be easy to find a used one for $200 in around a year. By then, Apple would be selling the $500 one for around $300~350 IMO.

I remember that article. I still think 300 to 350 for a new iPad next year isn’t going to happen.

My guess: The 3G models will see 50 to 100 dollar price drops. the wi-fi models will drop ~50 bucks each and get double the storage for each price.

that’s assuming the price drops at all. If sales are brisk, Apple won’t even bother.

I think in a year, Apple will refresh the range with better specs and the older model will get heavily discounted. That's what I'm going to aim for anyways.

Or by then, one of the clones from good ol' china will have similar sized screen and specs for around $250. ;)

I expect to see the $500 model at $400 in about 6 months, but it will no longer be officially sold by Apple, only clearing out the remaining stock. That is assuming a storage increase at that point, much like they did with the iPhone 3G.

aw c’mon :lol bringing clones into this isn’t worthwhile. You just know the software on those things is gonna be garbage.

I’m basing my conservative pricing estimates based on their iPod model. they rarely keep older models around except for the refurb page where they cut ~15% off the price. It’s possible that they’ll shake things up with the iPad but I’m not counting on it.

All I'm looking for is a large and light LCD display with long battery life, image viewer, and web browser. I don't care who gives it to me as long as it's cheap! If the iPad can full fill that role, that's great, but I don't think I'm going to bend over backwards to make sure that it's iPad that does the role for me, you know what I'm sayin' homey?

Penguin Publishing books on the iPad.

The children’s books are fully interactive and kinda cool.

edit: the potential for the stargazing book/app is also really high. I enjoy these apps one the iPhone but it would be more impressive an the larger screen.

anyway, I just wanted to post something about the iPad that was legitimate news :lol

Quick question? If you get the 3G version can you use it with any phone provider or only through AT&T? Also are you required to purchase a data contract if you buy the 3g version? Thanks.

you are correct. any country that has an iPad carrier agreement can deliver data to any 3G iPad. activation is on the iPad

What's with the carrier agreement then? If it's unlocked, it's unlocked. *confused*

It's not necessarily locked to AT&T, except the fact that AT&T's the only US carrier that'll be offering Micro-SIMs and apparently the iPad's 3G is a different frequency than other carriers. So... it's more or less AT&T or nothing. That's my understanding, anyway. But you are NOT required to buy a contract. It's $15/250MB or $30/unlimited a month, and you can start/cancel anytime (at least that's my understanding).

Thanks SuperPac, I'm sold, day one. Wish they would do this with the Iphone.

This seems extremely unlikely. The bands for the carriers are pretty much set in stone and there's no room to just add more. Spectrum costs massive amounts of money and there's very little of it for sale anyways.

Well, if it's anything like the iPhone, then it's true. AT&T is the only carrier in the US that supports 3G on the iPhone, because T-Mobile use a different frequency that the iPhone doesn't support.

Yes, AT&T uses a different frequency band as other providers in the US, but that has nothing to do with the ipad or the iphone. The iPad will have the same compatibility with other networks as the iPhone.

Looking back, I can see that that might have been what Silent Death was saying.

The generic clones from Asia, sure. But this isn't going to be the iPhone again where Apple can rule the category for a few years.

You can bet every smartphone OS maker already has serious tablet R&D going on and are just waiting for the first sign of iPad success to turn it up to eleven.

That Notion Ink Adam looks rather appealing. Too bad it isn't real.

If I get an iPad, I'll probably have to try to get a Euro version so I can get it to work with T-Mobile's 3G network.

Any Canadian partners for the 3G models yet? Would Rogers offer it subsidized with a $30 data plan contract?

Nothing on any international partners yet I don't think.

But, there's no way we're getting as good a deal as AT&T is offering, unless Apple is capable of a miracle in negotiations. I hope they are, because then I'd pick up a 3G edition in a heartbeat. Being able to activate it for a month right there on the device is awesome. A second data contract? Not so awesome.
