Not buying the first gen product. If the 2nd gen comes with MULTITASKING then I'll probably be buying it. That is what I wanted. I'll just be sticking with my iPod Touch 2nd Gen for the time being for my living room surfing tool (unless I'm feeling up to using my EEE).
2nd Gen would sell blockbusters with

no. that is just the partner offer in the US. It's unlocked though so you could presumably take it on T-Mobile (Edge) or even worldwide if you wanted on your national 3G provider.Blu_LED said:

It's an over sized iPod Touch with Kindle-esque features, iWork and a full version of iTunes. Really no point in getting this. I already have an iPod Touch. Why would I need/ want this?

No one seems to have noticed the keyboard layout is different:
It's missing the ";" key, which means if you learned how to type from a school, your pinky will now be resting on the "enter" key instead of ";" Also, you can't even rest your fingers on the home row of the keyboard because it's touch sensitive. Kinda stupid...

It seems like it has all of the downsides of the iphone in a larger version. I will make compromises with a smart phone because it is small and a phone.
The iPad looks like a huge step in the right direction and there is no doubt that in a few years this will be the way many people will browse the internet and consume books and magazines but Apple have come up short on a few key features that competitors and Apple will hopefully integrate over time.
Does anyone know how far away we are from a full lcd screen to be combined with some sort of e-ink technology or whether thats even possible?

Apple doesn't show-off stuff until it's done, and the disappointment primarily comes from the hype that people imaginations have whipped-up.

Conference did nothing to separate this from the rational part of anyones brain that is screaming "just get a laptop?". Apples weakest rollout since AppleTV. Cheap entry price, but at 16gb and no 3g you've really got to be kidding.
Will be interesting to see how it succeeds, but its an iProduct, so the voodoo spell is already in effect.

It's sexy as hell but I'll pass for now. I'm excited to see where the 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th iteration will go. My Mac Pro is just 1.5 years old so I won't be buying another personal computer for a few years.

I wasn't sure that I wanted one before the event, and I'm not sure I need one after the event.
Pricing is better than expected. I'd be happy with a 32GB wifi only - I can use my phone as a mobile 3g modem via wifi if needed. I'm not paying probably £100 more just for the benefit of also paying maybe £25 per month on top for data.
disappointed that its 4:3 as I have less interest in ebooks compared to movies/photos etc, so would have preferred something closer to 16:9.
Also can't believe it doesn't have even one camera. Didn't need 5mp or anything, just a couple of decent webcams front and back. Would have been perfect for mobile ichat. I'd have bought my parents-in-law one immediately - they're technophobes but could probably handle one of these if I set it up for them. Also shuts out augmented reality stuff too. No GPS, so I'm guessing google maps was using basic wifi location?
Gaming is possibly a primary driver for this for me. I'd love to play even the current app store games on a bigger screen, and the thought of optimised games with new interfaces is very interesting.
The other primary reason is the fact I spend a lot of time browsing the web/checking email, so this (with a 10 hour battery) would be very useful compared to my MBP which tends to need charging a lot. Although typing unnecessarily verbose forum posts would be trickier.
I went from a desktop to a laptop for convenience above all. This could make me move to a tablet for day to day internet, and maybe go back to a desktop for photo/video editing etc (eg a lovely 27" imac...)

I honestly think Apple are testing the market to see how far people will go on brand alone. The very thought of someone owning one of these giant ipod touches is hilarious.

It's kind of a neat piece of technology but I don't really need or want it. Maybe in a few years they'll come up with some really cool stuff to do with this kind of thing.

In for a 2nd Gen one, all it needs is a camera
any info about family use? If this is going to be used 'in the kitchen', I'd expect it to be able to sync together multiple calendars, perhaps allow easy switching of user accounts so it can be left on the coffee table for anyone to use etc.
app store is reason enough right now to go for something like this if you want a simple tablet type device. And the price is pretty reasonable IMO
